RIDE: OLYMPIC PENINSULA

August 4, 1978 36 miles
From Tacoma to’ Illahee State Park via routes 16, 303, 306; Kitsap County Map

ROAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: My head's buzzing - pretty good shoulder, Hwy 16
WEATHER: Sunny, blue and hot

FLORA/FAUNA: Cat tails - perfectly formed; blackberries

OTHERS IN GROUP: Mick

POINTS OF INTEREST: USS Missouri at Bremerton - "Mothball Fleet"; view of Seattle from top of Highway 306 and mountains mountains everywhere.

COMMENTS: Bremerton's a tough town. Probably military (Navy) influence. Forced to use sidewalk coming across Port Washington Narruws and Highway 303 due to bottleneck traffic. Very tired after 30 miles, as usual; relaxed by candlelight in camp.

Some children (2) emerged from nowhere to quiz us all about our trip. From a tent camping family, but these RV's have to go! DRIVING NOTES: Don't drive, for heaven's sake!

From Illahee State Park to Old Fort Townsend State Park via county roads

ROAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: Picturesque County roads. Little-moderate traffic;
beautiful scenery.
AVEATHER: Perfect

LORA/FAUNA: The August array - don't have a wildflower guide

POINTS OF INTEREST: Hood Canal and routes all along the Sound. Kitsap Memorial Park
for lunch - gorgeous view!

COMMENTS: Avoid highways (303. 3, 104) at all costs. The scenic hills are worth the
fewer cars. Found a little fruit stand along the way.
Campsite at the Sumner's was beautiful, quiet and secluded. Chris and Javier arrived
.on bicycle, also. So many different bird songs that I don't recognize - wish I could
know everything. Headwinds the last 30 miles!
DRIVING NOTES: Are you kidding?

August 6, 1978 13 miles
From Old Fort Townsend State Park to Port Townsend and back via Hwy 20 and bike route

ROAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: Horrendous Sunday RV's, etc. Some shoulder
WEATHER: Perfect

FLORA/FAUNA: Cedar and fir forests

COMMENTS: Couldn't seem to leave this beautiful spot, so we came back after the Sunday
club ride to stay again until tomorrow. Too peaceful to be true. Got to get up my
reserves to battle those RV's all week long.
DRIVING NOTES: Give bicycles a wide berth.

From Old Fort Townsend State Park to Sequim Bay National Park vi@ Hwys. 20 and 101
ROAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: Good shoulders, loads of RV's. Three mountain
ridges to cross.
WEATHER: Perfect - too hot
FLORA/FAUNA: Water lilies; stinging nettles
POINTS OF INTEREST: Lookout over Port Discovery, mountain canyons and farms.
(COMMENTS: Two broken derailleurs and a snapped cable make mountain climbing pretty
rough. Pulled into Sequim National Park to see about fixing them. Ate and drank
too much, little riding. A bird s--- on my sleeping sack. Wish there was a bus
back home.
DRIVING NOTES: Lots of trucks and RV's collide on 101. Fun to watch.
August 8, 1978 30 miles
from Sequim Bay National Park to Lincoln Park - Port Angeles
via Highway 101 and Old Olympic Highway
OAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: Horrible traffic on 101, pretty good shoulders. Hardly =
any traffic on backroads.
WEATHER: Hotter than hell; no trees along highway
FLORA/FAUNA: Hot black pavement and lots of hideous RV's
POINTS OF INTEREST: Olympic Mountains
COMMENTS: “Did fine as long as we could avoid 101. Can't cope with loud, continuous
_traffic. Trying to get out of Port Angeles was awful. No signs for 112 and nothing
but hills in every direction. Finally stopped - overheated and covered with heat
rash and all I know how to do when things go wrong is cry. A nice couple, Monica
and Dale, invited us in for iced tea; said‘it was 86° at 8:00 AM. Checked the bus
schedule for us and directed us to Lincoln Park for the night. Giving this trip up.
Can't always be a smashing success, I guess. Failure is relief.
DRIVING NOTES: God blast those motor vehicles to hell. Wouldn't mind driving back
to New York and settling at Pa's place forever and ever.
August 9, 1978 11 miles
From Lincoln Park-Port Angeles to Fort Victoria - Vancouver Island via Ferry
ROAD SURFACE/TERRAIN/TRAFFIC: Heavy tourist traffic; drivers courteous in Canada +
WEATHER: Hot
FLORA/FAUNA: Hanging baskets of flowers in Victoria

COMMENTS: At 11:40 AM we gave up looking for bike shipping crates and decided to take the 12:45 ferry to Victoria, finishing trip by ferrying back to Seattle. A great

alternative. Had great fun on the boat gloating over our newfound "success", eating hot dogs and apple pie. Won't be tempted by junk food again this trip. One hour riding in the sun and I'm covered with heat rash again. Have another crowded,

comfortable campsight here at Fort Victoria with a damn nest of bees overhead. Found a hoptoad living in my shower cap this morning - a tiny green one. DRIVING NOTES: Ha ha ha to all the jerks waiting in line to ferry cars over here!

August 10, 1978 11 miles
From Victoria to Seattle via ferry "Princess Marguerite" - 4 hours/$13.00

WEATHER: Rainy and sunny, cvoler

POINTS OF INTEREST: Visited Provincial Museum in Victoria. Downtown Victoria sure gives me a headache. Views of San Juan Islands from "Marguerite".

COMMENTS: What a day! Don't have the nerve to write about it until 8/11. Stayed at Youth Hostel '"Seahaven" in Seattle, which really triples as a half-way house, black youth hang- out, transient hotel. Just AWFUL! People _swarming around our bikes, looking us over just aiting to rip us off. Slept with money in our sleeping bags, didn't dare leave room except to use common bathroom. Had to mop floors before they'd let us go, and Mick still had to fight with the louse Bureaucrats running the place to have $5.00 deposit returned! Couldn't have found a seedier place in New York City. DRIVING NOTES: Had to listen to car engines being revved all night - just like sleeping in Tacoma. 8/11

Good shoulders, some construction work; followed highway signs.
WEATHER: Rainy and cool

POINTS OF INTEREST: Half expect to find our apartments ransacked.

COMMENTS: Had lunch (4:00 P.M.) at Pearl's By The Sea in Purdy. Best blackberry pie I've ever had. Easiest ride I've had this trip. Must be the cooler weather, and I'm finally getting in shape! Last sprint breakdowns - flat tire, broken spoke, broken rack. Bikes need a complete overhaul and so do we! A spider already had made himself at home in my bathtub. Nice to have fresh-ground coffee, listen to Paganini Violin Concerto, admire my beautiful plants. Feeling sorry now for the bums at the Youth Hostel and wish I hadn't been so unkind.

Couldn't have had a more disastrous trip if we'd planned it that way!

On September 10, the Tacoma Wheelmen are putting on a track race at Marymoor Park.
This is the best kind of bicycle racing for spectators to watch. So, if you haven't
yet seen real bicycle racing, come on out to Marymoor, one mile south of Redmond on
Bellevue-Redmond Road.

On your return trip from the Mount Vernon Century, stop in and watch the races. They begin at 1:00 and continue until 6:00. All Tacoma Wheelmen can be admitted to the races for half price - either have your club card, or call Gary Singleton.

We will be starting our winter training soon, cyclo-cross racing and cross country

skiing. The Point Defiance Time Trials are part of this schedule.
October Ist is the day for the Northwest's biggest race, to be held in College
Place, Washington, on the other side of the mountains. There will be approximately

Bob Branson's 1979 Daffodil Century is already taking shape! The Club needs a -new design for the fourth year Daffodil Patch. ‘Four daffodils won't quite fit on he traditionad three-inch patch, so a design that depicts the overall ride is being sought. Bob has suggested a scene that includes Mount Rainier. The patch will remain three inches round, and sketches should be sent to Bob Branson by the September General Meeting. In the past, we have taken the most pride in patches designed by club members! : mw
