BICYCLING WITH FRANK
---CONTAGIOUS DISEASE WARNING---

Tandemitis has struck Puget Sound with about thirty tandems in the Puget Sound Tandem Club, Bill Stevenson President and the Tacoma Wheelmen are not immune. Ben Colby, Dan and Vera Feldhaus, Stuart and Barbara Curry, Bob and Pat Branson, have all been affiliated. One should be careful to avoid mention of the word ''tandem' in their presence, lest their enthusiasm cause one to think bad thoughts like "Hey! The wife and I can ride together on one of these!"

The worst known cases among the Tacoma Wheelmen are Kirk Kirkland and Nancy
Clemens, who have challenged Frank and Lisa to a great tandem race from Roy to
Winlock with the losers forced to buy cinnamon rolls for the winners. All four
riders have severe cases for which there is no known cure. A 90 to 100 mile
ride on Saturday will generally alleviate the symptoms until about the next
Wednesday night when the telephones begin to spout phrases such as "What time
shall we start?" "Where's breakfast?" "Gosh, that's only 60 miles! What will
we do in the afternoon?" Members are cautioned to avoid contact with persons
having tandemitis as their enthusiasm for this form of bicycling is extremely
contagious, and once you begin looking, there is no retreat!

2916 100th sw, lakewood, 582-5538

The waning sunlight of November brings us to the end of our sixth year and once again, it is time to thank the people who made bicycling an enjoyable activity in 1978. The officers have handled some pretty thorny problems this year, but thanks to lots of hard work by Gary Branfeld.and Steve Newton, we have anew set of ByLaws and a tax-exempt status that makes our finances legal for the first time. Gary has saved the skin of all the past officers as well.

Mary Ann and Mick, as Newsletter Editor and Tour Captain, have done the two
absolutely essential jobs that make our club a club. With a Newsletter and a
ride schedule, we are a club and without them, there is no club.

Tom Weeks has provided several interesting programs and Dan's steady
leadership has kept it all together.

Most important of all is the willingness of the members to make that special
effort to plan and lead rides. The most difficult ride, of course, is the Haven
Lake Picnic by Eldon and Virginia Stratton. All the club rides add immensely to
our enjoyment.

Other memorable rides include Steve and Phyllis! campout at Cougar Rock, Jack'stride to Longmire and Paradise, Chris's endurance fun from Point Defiance, up the Ollala wall and across Vashon, and Ben's adroit handling of the historical Seattle ride, the most difficult of the year to manage.

(BIC Y* LING WITH FRANK) cont:

Those members who have been reading the "Newsletter" know that Gary Singleton's inspiration and leadership have provided an environment from which a fine group of racers has developed. We touring cyclists should remember that nearly all of the finest equipment was developed for racing. Bruce Spong has asked us to soft-pedal his very great contribution to our success, so we will just say "Thanks, Bruce". The whole Puget Sound area enjoys Bob Branson's Daffodil Century. The Tacoma Wheelmen's (lub enjoys it more than anyone else. : fw

---And thank you, Frank, for a great year! Who can forget the Memorial
Day weekend trip to Victoria, the famous "Orcas Island" ride, the rides around
Roy, Yelm, Hart's Lake Loop, Longacres, the great Fort Lewis "flats" and the
countless "extended rides''?

Thanks for keeping those tandem and die-hard crazies under control! Frank
wears'em out on Saturday!

We really enjoy the winter bicycle maintenance classes at Frank's. Last winter, we learned to cook our chains in that cold garage while Ben parroted our insanity! And a personal thank you to Frank for reshaping my front bag rack so it doesn't scrape the front wheel. Everything's made for 26" frames, it seems, but Frank can make a shortie frame worthwhile to ride, too!
