Thanks, too, to people whe kept a ready supply of bananas, bagels, cookies, baked goods, spuds and sand- wiches on the tables A thank-you 1s extended to those who kept the water barrels full as thirsty riders on those very toasty days constantly tapped the supply.

Special thanks goes out to those wha mixed up many batches of orange juice-- a job which was especially tough —
an Friday when the cans were more solidly frozen and we had nothing to stir with until Greg, who follows the

NEWS: The Good, the Bad and the Hopeful

Sood News: Last month, your Pierce County Council approved
anew County Park Plan that envisions a linear park from the
Nisqually Delta to Mount Raimer. Someday, we should be able
to ride our bikes on this trail. This plan includes the “Foothill
Rails-to-Trails” segment. Look for a program on this topic
during our fall monthly meetings.

Bad News: In May your Metropolitan Park Board let us know that bike riding was technically illegal on the trails at Point Defiance. The City Code allows the Board to designate trails for speciai uses such as bike riding. We have requested the Board to consider letting us use these trails on at least a trial basis. These trails are perfect for beginning bike riders. We are doing all we can to help the Board. Having responsible bikers on the trai! will provide protection to vulnerable people using the trail. Please let your Park Board know your feelings on this issue.

lore Good News: Last month the County Council received a __arce County Transportation Plan “Policy Document” for their consideration and approval. The “Palicy Document” en- yisions an oyerlav svstem for County roads where important commuter and recreational routes will be identified and slated for impravements. More frequent cleaning of existing shoul- ders 1s envisioned on these routes so that we can use them and ease traffic congestion and improve safety. Look for a workshoo program on this topic during the fall when we will identify important routes ---Bob Myrick

Salmon Barbecue Ride

Saturday. August 19: Carpool at UPS to leave promptly at
8:30am or drive directly to Ken Coffman's house. Ride begins
at Sam--40(hilly) nviles of lovely farmland and a view of the
Sound. BBQ at Ken's after the ride. Salmon provided by Ken.
Bring your favorite salad, side dish, desert, munchie, etc.
There will be volleyball, croquet and horseshoes, too. PLEASE

Is anyone interested in a three-day kayak trip?

We'll start from San Juan island's west side and steer north through whale country, exploring the remote coves and beaches of San Juan, Waldron, Orcas, Shaw and the Wasp islands keeping a constant watch for orca and minke whales. Rugged coastline and an abundance of wildlife highlight this trip. As we set up camp in a secluded cove you'll look across Haro Strait into the mountainous Canadian Gulf Islands, seemingly a stone’s throw away. We'll build a driftwood campfire and watch the sun set across the border.

The evergreen shores and pristine marine environment of the
hundreds of islands making up the San Juan archiplelago are
known throughout the world for their unsurpassed beauty.
There is no better way to explore this setting than by sleek,
silent and safe sea kayaks.

Anyone who enjoys moderate exercise and camping outdoors
can participate. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NOT NECESSARY.
San Juan Kayak Expeditions will provide reliable, two-person
gea kayaks and equipment, all major camping gear (tents,
cooking utensils. tarps, stoves, etc.) and all meals except
lunches.

The dates of this trip will be September 16,17 and 18, and
