COMMUTING SEMINAR

Come to our April TWC Club meeting and experience the “Bicycling Commuting Seminar”. This presentation includes a videotape and a lively discussion of the important aspects of bicycle Club member Jan Wieser will present this program which leads up to “Bike To Work Week” on May 20 to 25, 1991.

This program is provided by Pierce County and the State’s Department of Ecology from Clean Air grant monies. It is the first program of its type in the State. Safety, company involvement, employee involvement, and benefits to the environment will all be discussed.

This meeting will also be an
ideal time for you to present your
ideas for the role of Pierce Transit,
Pierce County and Tacoma Traffic
planning, and Pierce County
Trails, in our bicycling community.

Our Club meeting is on April

Sunday, April 28, 1991. The
place is the City Park of Orting,
Washington. Day-of-ride
registration will be open 7:00 AM
to 3:00 PM, and the course will
remain open until 7:00 PM.

T-shirts, beautiful routes, food, sagwagon, and a chance to donate to the Foothills Rails-to-trails Coalition and the Bicycle Federation of Washington are all yours for participating in this TWC sponsored Classic.

Tour De Pierce--Last year, TWC helped oe County Parks put on the first Tour De Pierce, a family fun ride starting at the Puyallup Fair Grounds. The park department needs volunteers and expertise again this year to put on a successful ride. The ride is scheduled for July 14th. Proceeds will be directed to on-going programs like the “Sprocketwoman” bike safety program for schools, and the new ‘Bike To Work” program. If you feel like being a good citizen and contributing to our community, please call Bob Myrick at 473-7455 or Mike Dobb at 593-4176. .

Adopt a Frenchman?--The City of Tacoma and the City of St. Nazaire, France are considering becoming sister cities. We have sent STP applications, LAW National Rally information, and Tacoma Wheelmen’s brochures to France. If you would be interested in adopting a French person around the first week in July, and helping them do the STP or other rides, it is time to start thinking about it. A home stay would probably be involved. Call Bob Myrick at 473-7455 for further information. . .

LOUIE’S SPRING TRAINING CAMP--MAY 4th to May 19th:

Ride with Louie and Marie Boitano in Central Washington starting with the 6th Annual Apple Blossom Tour in Wenatchee on 4 and 5 May. Then car and bicycle camp throughout Central Washington, finishing by the Inland Empire Cemetery on May 18th, and the Wine Country Tour on May 19th. Come and camp for one or two weeks. Three classes on the use of bicycles are part of the spring school offerings sponsored by the City of Tacoma and Tacoma School District #10. For registration information call Community Schools at 591-5063, to see if class openings remain.

for adults on Mondays for 5

Hunt Community School. The
class will meet for two hours
beginning at 6:30 PM, and the fee
is free.

If you are serious about cycling
or would like to be, this five-night
class will cover everything you will
need to know, including:
Demonstrations of four different
types of bikes; How to fit your
bike; and Bike maintenance and
equipment needed for different bike
touring.

For those interested, a bicycle
ride to Sumner will be planned for
a Saturday after the completion of
the class.

Community School on Wednesday,
April 17, and at Mason
Community School on Thursday,

The-Road Maintenance for all ages
at Meeker Community School.
The fee is free.

You are invited to bring your bicycle to this class for a tune-up for spring and summer bike rides. If you have tools bring them along because this will be a “hands-on” class. You will learn how to clean your chain, change a flat, fix your gears, and Bonnie will answer any

condition.

Registrations are in hand from 29 states and three countries for the League of American Wheelmen’s 1991 National Rally, Probike Northwest 91, and the National Congress of Cyclists, all of which will be held in Olympia, Washington, July 3-7, 1991. The theme of the week is The Bicycle: Vehicle for a Small Planet. Marcia Lowe, author of a book by that title, will be the keynote speaker July 3rd.

The National Rally will emphasize recreational bicycling. Twenty different on-road routes have been selected, graded, and measured, ranging from 10 miles of very level riding up to a 160-mile ultramarathon ride through hills and valleys. Each day will have at least two “performance-oriented” rides of 18-22 mph, as well as a larger number of leisurely, moderate, and brisk rides. Numerous off-road rides in the Capital Forest have been mapped-out, ranging from technical single-track trails to placid rides along unused logging roads. Slide shows, videos, an ice cream social, and other social events will fill the evening hours.

The National Congress of Cyclists, convened each year by the League, will highlight the Surface
Transportation Re-authorization Act, which will set the plan of roadway funding for the next decade. The last
major rewrite of this Act was in the 1950s, which led to the creation of the interstate highway system.
Lobbyists from the League of American Wheelmen and the Bicycle Federation of America will be on hand from
Washington D.C.

Probike Northwest 91 is the seventh in a series of regional bicycle advocacy conferences. In addition
to the environmental and energy attention on sustainable global transportation strategies, workshops on bicycle
facility design, rail to trail conversions, safety education, bicycling equipment, and bicycling club development
are scheduled.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday, July 7th, with the Hamm’s Capital Lakefair Criterium, a regional points challenge with $2500 in prize money.

This tremendous combination of events is unprecedented. Over 1000 cyclists are expected from across
