For A Ride

Judy Wagonfeld, a TWBC Club member,
has written a book entitled: Short Bike Rides
In Western Washington.

For our March meeting, on Tuesday, the
15th, Judy will describe the rides she has
compiled over the past ten years, including
areas outside the Northwest.

Our Club meetings are held at the South End Community Center and Pool, located at 402 E. 56th Street, between Pacific and McKinley Avenues, just past Concordia Lutheran School. The building is about 300 feet off the street. This location is on a bus line, and is easily reached by bicycle.

Club meetings begin at 7:00 p.m., and
include announcements, door prizes and
food and drink, in addition to the program.

All Club members are encouraged to meet
Judy and learn about some rides. She may
have some new ones for you!

Volunteer For The Daffodil!

The success of the Daffodil Classic depends on a large group of dedicated volunteers. No experience is necessary, just your interest, enthusiasm, and willingness to have a great time. This is the Tacoma Wheelmen's “Woodstock” of cycling events, so don't miss it.

In TWEC tradition, volunteers are fed at
the Volunteer's Pizza Party at the end of the
day. Volunteers will receive the Official
Daffodil Volunteer Souvenir for their hard
work, and they may ride the Daffodil
Classic free.

Areas where volunteers are needed
include:

eEarly morning parking in Orting.

*Rest stops at Kapowsin, Barney's
Corners, and Lake Tapps. =

eSag support and stranded rider assis-
tance.

eSupply deliveries and course signing.

*Clean-up and litter patrol at the end of
the day.

¢Equipment clean-up and storage.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, for the last several years, Club member Stan Engle has been leading a group of
Mountaineers in some fast walking or jogging along Ruston Way in Tacoma. He welcomes TWBC members to join
him in this opportunity to keep in shape and do some conditioning for cycling. The group meets at the dock near Old
Town in Tacoma (McCarver Avenue) at 6:00 p.m. Your time and energy will determine if you go 2 or 4 miles. Call

Information

Kent's Corner

The Peninsula Metric Century
meeting in February was an excellent
start for this 12th annual Club century
ride. Seven people enjoyed Dena's
hospitality.

Jim Couch of Spoke & Sprocket bike shop has offered mechanical assis- tance, along with needed items for sale. Noel Canning Company of Yakima has once again pledged 100 gallons of apple cider. Air Waves Communications, Inc., Cellular Northwest, will help with a few cellular phones.

We need a couple more folks for the
organizational aspects of the ride.

Our next meeting is March 8th at
7:00 p.m., at Dena and Ralph Wessels’
home. Refer to the February Newslet-
ter for directions, or call one of us.

My son Flynn and Haynes and I rode at Capitol Forest with thoughts of a medium level ride. I was going to ‘retrace a route and made a wrong turn. We found a beautiful trail—sun- light coming through the trees, etc. This uphill trail was relentless, going over five miles. We found our way out by going downhill, no problem, fun.

I heard from Bob Myrick that the
Eastside gang had a nice 50 mile ride
to Orting.

Brian Wester's ride had Ray, Bob,
Dave, Jan, Fran & Bud and another
Fran enjoying the pace. The next day
Jan Wieser and Bob and Dave rode to
the Krain restaurant four miles north
of Enumclaw—good food. Jan is now
on the mend from arthroscopic
surgery. We wish her the best.

Carless Commute '94
Shifts Gears

This year's Carless Commute
program promises a few changes with
the same pitch—“Drive Less Than
More”, and the same key method—re-
corded participation.

The Pierce County Parks and
Recreation Department has gathered a
large committee including several
TWBC members (CG, BM, BV, SP).

A major change you will notice right away will be how to win a prize. Last year, winners achieved the greatest number of miles for walking, bicy- cling, busing, and carpooling. This year, measured miles for each mode will be adjusted for its environmental, social, and cost affect and benefit. The lowest sums of the combined modes will win prizes. You golf fans will appreciate this system. So will walk- ers, bicyclists, and transit riders who will be rewarded for minimizing their driving. In order to attract those with longer commutes, the committee is looking at a “days without an SOV” prize, and other ideas.

In the works—The State Department of Energy has given a $5000.00 grant to prepare a “How To” manual for other communities to use in putting on a Carless Commute program. Several committee members are advising a consultant hired to write the manual.

Mike Dobb, program head, informed
the committee that the federal govern-
ment also noticed the program and
was impressed by its results.

The County's larger employers must comply with the '95, '97', and '99 goals to reduce commuter miles. With the program's emphasis on fewer miles, I hope employers will increase their participation, and the state and federal governments will increase their leader- ship and dollars for alternate modes.

Indirectly, the Carless Commute
program can make the roads safer for
bicycling.

Does Someone Have
A Meeting For This
Club Member To Attend?

As I was rushing out the door to
attend the Auburn meeting on their
proposed trail, I received a phone call
from TWBC member Scott Pierson. He
asked if there was a meeting he
should be attending that evening.

When I informed him of the meeting that I was attending, he declined my offer of a ride, since he was not knowledgeable in the meeting's subject. I would not bother to report this, except, the next day, I met Bob Vogel from Pierce County, and he told me that Scott Pierson called him last night looking for a meeting to attend.

I hope Scott found a meeting that
Tuesday night. If he didn’t, I will
provide a list of meetings he can
attend. This motivation shows a
dedication to the cause of improving
cycling which exceeds expectations.

Annual Banquet Report

Over 90 TWBC members attended
our Annual Banquet on Saturday,
January 22, 1994.

The evening started with our “Continental Crossers”. Bud Blanchard told us about his 1960 trip around the perimeter of the U.S.A. Steve and Phyllis Lay brought mementos of their 1976 Bicentennial bike ride across the U.S.A. How many people know that Steve and Phyllis first met while crossing the U.S.A.? Laurie Hatch brought photos from her trip across the U.S.A., and Don Hatch brought a video taped history of his 1993 RAAM style trip across the U.S.A. His group covered 140 miles a day!

After a very fine dinner catered by Grazie's Ristorante Italiano's Dean Wilkey, Carla Gramlich presented 17 awards to our Board Members, Staff, and Committee chairs. These are the key people who help with you to make the TWBC such a great Club. The award was a useful blue Park Tool Pizza Cutter, tastefully mounted on a blue plaque with blue lettering.

Louie Boitano was kind enough to present gag awards to people that certainly deserved recognition and exposure. Steve and Phyllis recognized many Club members who had turned in their ride logs. The 2000 mile riders received beautiful tee shirts signifying their accomplishments. They are: Louie Boitano, Steve Brown, Joyce Clifford, Carla Gramlich, Bob Myrick, and Steve and Phyllis Lay. Volunteers were recognized for their fine efforts in ‘supporting bicycling in our community.

A wonderful chocolate cake was
baked by Mrs. Frisbee's bakery. It was
decorated with a map of the U.S.A.,
and our “Continental Crossers” further
decorated the cake with their routes.
After we consumed the cake, Steve
Lay and Diane Lister presented a great
slide show highlighting our past year
of riding.

Thanks to the great people I've
already mentioned, and the following
great people. I had nothing to do on
banquet day so I went for a bike ride.

Steve Brown brought the refreshments,
Kent Wienker picked up the cake, Stan
Engle and Bernie Dixon set-up and
cleaned-up the Mountaineer's hall, and
Hazel Giddings monitored our
registration.

A Ride Leader “Thank
You” And Suggestions

During the annual banquet the following ride leader names were drawn for gift certificates, as part of our Ride Leader Incentive Awards program: Jim Davis and Phyllis Lay received $10.00 certificates; Louis Boitano and Steve Lay received $15.00 certificates; Jody Longfellow and Harvey Lister received $25.00 certificates; and Joyce Clifford and Diane Taylor received $50.00 certificates.

Every month we see names like Steve and Phyllis, Louis and Bob as ride leaders. They do a great job, but we need other people to prevent burn- out, and to supplement the ride calendar in case of vacations and other activities.

Several

education, route improvement, safety,
ride codes, ride calendar planning, and
co-leaders could be covered.

¢*More Co-Leaders—new leaders
would have a more experienced co-
leader to give them confidence,
motivation, and the ability to help
with riders of different skill levels.

books available to Club members, and
recommend a book buying budget.

The Ride Leader Incentive Program
for 1993 did not meet expectations for
more leaders. If you have ideas please
call Steve and Phyllis at 759-1816, or
come to a Club or Board meeting.

Meetings, Meetings,
And More Meetings

Ihave attended several meetings on a variety of bicycling issues since the first of the year. Everyone is encour- aged to get involved in their commun- ity to help improve bicycling facilities and safety. Many people complain, but so few offer suggestions. Our local government officials do listen when someone comes forward with con- structive suggestions.

More people listen because cycling can reduce traffic problems. Cyclists have to speak up, because cars still get the bulk of the money for road projects. Available federal monies enable local communities to plan for non-motorized projects. So, go to a meeting. You or another interesting person can make the meeting better than watching TV.

Ruston And The End Of ASARCO: This past January the City of Ruston held several meetings on land use, once the smelter is removed and cleaned-up. One suggestion is a park area by the water. Several cyclists voiced objections to plans for making N. Baltimore a main access road for this area. N. Baltimore is now a quiet street used by cyclists to go to Point Defiance. Anyone who lives in this area should be aware of the affect of traffic, and insist on better bicycle access. Some plans show parking lots with wonderful waterviews. Please attend these meetings!

City Of Auburn Plans For The
Green River Valley: King County
voters approved plans for a horizontal
park to Flaming Glasier. Land owners
in the area protested, and that path is
now a dead issue. The City of Auburn
unveiled plans for their path from
Kent to the Auburn, Black Diamond
Road along the Green River. Bicyclists
who live in the area should attend the
next meeting on March Ist at 7:00 p.m.
in the Auburn City Hall, City Council
Chambers. Plans for this trail look
good, and cyclists should help make
this trail bicycle friendly.

Foothills Rails To Trails: At the
January monthly meeting, plans were
unveiled for the section in downtown

Orting. The trail is moving along with
recent victories in court in the Coali-
tion's favor. Spring will provide more
work parties to attend. Call 841-2570
for current information on the trail,
work parties, and meetings.

Puyallup River Trail: Ideas from bicyclists, walkers, equestrians and others were taken in the earlier stages of planning for this trail, from Puyal- lup along the River Road into Tacoma. This is in the planning stages for a trail that will help cyclists ride from Tacoma to Puyallup.

State Helmet Law:William Hoehne,
Karen Whitney, and myself took a
drive down to Olympia on a sunny
Friday afternoon. Karen and I spoke to
the House sub-committee in support
of the proposed helmet law. We then
listened to the pros and cons pre-
sented to the Senate sub-committee.
Copies of these proposed laws will be
available at the next Club meeting.
Thanks to other Club members who
would have gone, if more advance
notice had been given.

Pierce County's Helmet Law: This
meeting will occur after our March
Newsletter deadline. I hope to report
in April that this law has passed, as
written. Club members will work on
providing more information on bicycle
helmets for adults and children, no
matter what the outcome is on this
ordinance.

Bob Myrick, our government affairs
guy, is the best source of information
on the above meetings, and other
related bicycle meetings in our com-
munities. Call him at 473-7455.

Mini Minutes
TWBC Board Meeting

All Board Members were present at
the meeting on February 1, 1994 at the
home of the President, Carla Gramlich.

*Hazel Giddings gave the Trea-
surer's report. The checking account
balance on January 31, 1994 was
$15,524.60. Funds are being spent for
Bike Expo and the Daffodil Classic.

eBrian Wester reported that all
license applications had been made for
Bike Expo. 1993 Daffodil Classic t-

shirts will be sold with 1994 shirts. Application has been made for TWBC members to ride in the Daffodil Parade. A brochure will be distributed in the Cascade Bicycle Club's newslet- ter, and pins, instead of patches will be available this year.

*Kent Wienker reported on the
Peninsula Metric Century. An addi-
tional food stop is planned, and
volunteers will ride for free.

¢The Club's general meeting loca- tion for June will be changed, as the Metropolitan Park District will give usage of the South End Pool to an- other group. Kent would appreciate hearing from Club members on other possible locations.

eCarla reported that TWBC is
involved in activating the helmet law
on both the state and local levels. New
ride leader classes, and rides specifi-
cally for new members were dis-
cussed. .

eSue Given reported that she is working with different groups making recommendations on the ASARCO clean-up. This involves land use with non-motorized provisions. Interested TWEC members are invited to call Sue for information.

eWilliam Hoehne recommended
that Club members desiring to put

Information For

The First Time Rider
by Carla Gramlich, TWBC President

So, you have been a member of the Club for a month, or maybe five years, and you have just developed the courage to come out for a Club ride. Here is some general information that will help make your ride a pleasant experience.

Before:
1. Make sure your bicycle is in good
working order.
2. Make sure your helmet fits prop-
erly. We strongly encourage helmets,
and you will look funny riding with
us without one.
3. Choose a ride from the Ride Calen-
dar or the Rideline (759-2800).
4. Call the Ride Leader. This is your first
time, and you need to make sure the
ride is right for you. Ride leaders are
friendly people—they can help make
your ride positive rather than painful.
Please call ahead of time. Call before
9:00 p.m. to avoid a grumpy leader.

What To Bring On A Ride:
1. Dress for the weather. If it looks like
rain bring a rain jacket, and a place to
store it, like a bike bag.
2. Tool kit and pump. Basic equipment
is a patch kit, inner tube (that fits the
tire on your bike), and tire irons. You
will get many offers of help to fix a
flat or other minor problems on a code
1 or 2 ride. You may find yourself
alone with a flat on a code 3 or 4 ride.
This may help you choose a ride. A
couple of quarters for a phone call is
helpful. ~
3. First Aid Kit. “What, I am going to
get hurt!” An accident is never plan-
ned, but if you have some trouble a
first aid kit comes in handy. Remem-
ber prescribed medications, if neces-

sary.

4. Food. TWBC rides usually stop to
buy food, but sometimes you need a
snack. For emergencies a couple of
Power Bars or an apple will get you to
the next meal.

5. Water. On a short ride water is
great if you worked hard getting up a
hill. Hot days and longer rides may
need two water bottles.

1. Sunscreen and sunglasses.

Start Of The Ride:

1. Arrive on time to prepare for the
ride.

2. Sign the ride sheet. You have now
signed your life away to the Ride
Leader. No, not really. The form is an
insurance release.

During The Ride:

1. Obey All Traffic Laws. Remember,
you are on a bicycle, and a car can
really hurt if it hits you.

2. Ride at your own pace. If you try to
ride too fast you can tire and may not
be able to finish the ride. Riders on
code 1 or 2 rides will check to make
sure you do not get lost.

3. Do Not Group Think! Do not follow
the group into intersections—check for
yourself. Traffic changes quickly at
times, and your pace may be different
from the “fast” rider.

4. Use hand signals. If you must have
both hands to brake, yelling “stop-
ping” can prevent a collision with an-
other rider.

When Troubles Strike:

Even experienced riders occasionally have road problems and_ physical ailments. When trouble strikes yell “stopping” to the nearest rider. Pull to the side of the road and deal with the problem. A nearby rider will usually ask if you are OK. If you are just doing a clothing adjustment or other minor task, wave the rider on. If you need help, signal the other rider to stop. On most Club rides there are people who can help with both minor and major situations.

Sometimes all the planning in the world does not help. On one ride of twenty miles, which I led, it took all day to complete the ride because of the difficulties encountered. Several people bailed out because they had to get home. If you need to leave a ride tell the Ride Leader or another rider. This will prevent us from searching for you.

After The Ride:

1. Thank your Ride Leader.

2. Record your mileage for the ride on
your ride log.
