Holiday Party Scheduled

For December 18, 1993

Club members are invited to join the events scheduled for the annual holiday party on Saturday, the 18th. Joyce Clifford again invites everyone to her home at 3811 N. Madison, Tacoma, Washington. Holiday food and lights are in store for all who come to this winter potluck and bicycle lights ride.

Party schedule:

12:30 p.m. Put food in house.

1:00 p.m. Afternoon ride.

4:30 p.m. Set up for dinner.

5:00 p.m. Let's eat!

°6:30 p.m. Holiday lights ride.

Members are invited to any or all of the
activities.

Wear warm clothes for the evening ride,
which can be quite cold. (You might need
them for the afternoon ride, as well.) Steve
and Phyllis Lay will take us on a slow ride
to see the best of the holiday lights in the
north end of Tacoma.

All bicycles need lights for the night ride.
For fun, decorate yourself and your bicycle
with colored lights.

Because of a short street, parking for cars
is minimal. Car pool, park around the
corner, or ride your bike. If you need
directions to the house, call Joyce at 759-
2393.

It's Banquet Time Again!

All Club members are invited to our
annual TWBC banquet. This year's banquet
is buffet style, on Saturday, January 22,
1994, at the Tacoma Mountaineer's Club,
2302 North 30th Street, in Old Town
Tacoma.

The banquet will start off with refresh-

ments at 6:00 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Our theme will be “Continental Crossings”, starring TWBC members who have bicycled across America. Dinner will be catered by Grazie's Ristorante Italiano. We will have freshly baked breads, Campagnola salad, Caeser salad, Penne primavera, pasta with vegetables and cheese, chicken parmagiano, and dessert.

After dinner, Louis Boitano will present
highlights and lowlights from the past year's
riding. Send in your ride logs to receive a
mileage certificate and recognition. There
will also be a great slide show recalling our
1993 adventures.

If you know something that someone
needs to forget, now is the time to call
Louis. Help is needed for the banquet. Call
me at 473-7455 to help. We need someone
who can design a cake, provide refresh-
ments, and do other similar jobs.

Tam happy to announce that coordinators for the Daffodil Classic and Peninsula Metric Century have been found, and these events are in good hands. Brian Wester and Sylvia Russell will provide leadership for the Daffodil Classic. Our own Vice-presi- dent, Kent Wienker, will head up the PMC. Information has been submitted at the B.EW. calendar meeting for both events. Already, work is being done to get ready for EXPO in February. Let us give our support and time to help make these coordinator's jobs a little easier by volunteering for one or both events.

Mt. Tahoma Trails Association Season Opener Party & Annual Meeting: When: Wednesday, December 1, 1993. Where: Washington State Historical Society, 315 N. Stadium Way, Downtown Tacoma. Time: Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Activities include: The MTTA Multimedia Slide Show; Auction of ski equipment and other great prizes; Hut Reservation Booth. Food and beverages available. Don't Rain On My Parade! For several years members of our Club have talked about being in the Annual Torchlight Christmas Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. This year you will have a chance to be in that parade. The parade runs through downtown Tacoma starting at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 1993. To participate we must check-in at 3:00 p.m. Plan to meet at Carla's house at 3218 N. 28th Street between 2:00-2:45 p.m. to get ready. Help will be available to decorate your bicycle and make sure your lights are working. The group will leave to ride

downtown to check-in and line-up for this annual event.

Holiday Party Night Ride: Every year members spend time decorating their bicycles for the Holiday Party night ride, scheduled this year on December 18th. Take time to ready your bicycles a couple of weeks earlier and show off your lights. For more information call Carla at 752-4038. She can provide information on lights for your bicycle and how to decorate for the holiday. Everyone is invited, but you must have the lights (white front and rear

reflector) to be legal. Do we have a volunteer to be Santa?

Rainier Roadriders 9th Annual New Year's Day Ride: January 1st—A Day To Remember. Have you ever dreamed of doing the Iditerod? Perhaps a trek to the South Pole? Or maybe even the dreaded Freeze Your Buns Off Extravaganza known as the 9th Annual New Year's Day Ride? If you have, then may I recommend that you skip the first two events and make your way to Orting City Park for a most worthwhile event!

Each year on January Ist a few intrepid souls gather for the annual ride to Wilkerson following the treacherous back roads of Pierce County. Treacherous you ask? I say treacherous indeed. Last year, though we saw only a half dozen cars in 28 miles, the cracks in the pavement, yes, even the spaces between the stones, were filled with snow and ice. The temperature was in the twenties, and as you exhaled you could watch your breath crystallize

and float gently to earth. It was seriously cold.

Fortunately, the sun was out and we rode in absolute splendor. The fields sparkled with their coating of frost. Dogs merely wagged their tails as we passed. And you could smell fresh baked apple pies that had been set in the window to cool. Yeah! And the Seahawks had a 14 and 2 season, yeah, yeah, that's the ticket, and the Mariners had a .685 season and went on to win the World Series! Oops! Wrong fairy tale.

Anyway, at Wilkerson we stop at the Pick and Shovel for warming up and lunch. This is an old coal mining town that somehow still survives, though the economics of coal mining played out long ago. It is a quaint and clean little town with a few small businesses along both sides of the main street. After lunch we wind our way along the

Carbon River back to Orting.

If this sounds like an adventure for you, then plan to be at the Orting City Park (southeast of Sumner) January Ist, at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. start. This ride is sponsored by the old Rainier Roadriders, Mike and Leslie McCoy and Mike Dolan. The fee is $2.00, which is donated to the Bicycle Federation of Washington. Come on out and start

the New Year right.

Annual Meeting Report

The annual meeting of the Bicycle Federation of
Washington was held on Saturday, November 6, 1993,
and our Club was well represented. In addition to
myself, Carla Gramlich, Bob Myrick, and Kent Wienker
also attended. Bob is chairman of the B.F.W. Advocacy
Committee, and I serve as treasurer.

While a more detailed report on the meeting can be
found in the B.F.W. publication The Digest, which is sent
out with our Newsletter, a few items might be of interest
to TWBC members.

While funding for the B.F.W. has been steadily increasing, expenses have continued to exceed revenue. The B.F.W. board decided to limit contract employees to

specific tasks needed for this year. The first is a lobbyist, the second a fund-raising specialist. It is hoped these efforts will make it possible for the B.F.W. to return to having a year-round Executive Director again in 1995. One very bright note on fund raising is the decision by the Cascade Bicycle Club, as well as several other clubs, to increase their ride pledges to $1.00 per rider for each of their events. (Some charity events are going even higher than that!) On the legislative front, the board heard the results of a September retreat, and approved action to actively support helmet legislation. Helmet legislation has been introduced in each of the last five sessions of the legislature, and will keep returning. It is imperative that any helmet legislation passed be well written and include (Continued on page 5)

(Continued from page 4) education and enforcement provisions. By preparing the language and actively participating in its passage, we should be able to have the best possible bill. Our lobbying will now be done by Christine Parsons, an Olympia resident and bicyclist, with a strong drive for getting the job done. The B.F.W. Executive Committee will meet throughout the year, carrying out the policies agreed upon by the full board. They are also actively seeking people to participate in the activities of the B.F.W. Next fall will see the election of new officers, and candidates are already being sought. A secretary is needed right now! Tina Jarvis of Federal Way is continuing to serve in that capacity until a replacement can be named. If you have questions or interest in the activities of the B.F.W. please call me at 752-8636.

Pierce County

Helmet Law

In October I was contacted to
provide information for a Pierce
County Ordinance concerning bicycle
helmets. A Pierce County resident
was tired of seeing neighbor kids
riding without helmets that she knew
they owned. She talked to a Pierce
County Council member, and the
process was started to enact a helmet
law. The law will be similar to King
County's law requiring all bicyclists
to wear a helmet while on county
road ways.

B.F.W. will again lobby at the state
level for a helmet law. Some believe
several county and city laws will
promote a state law.

You only have to look at our Club and you will find the importance of the helmet. Many Club members have expressed thanks for a helmet during a fall. The helmet can prevent serious injuries. Now is your chance to bring this information to the rest of the community. Included in our proposal is a provision for providing helmets, and education on_ the wearing of the helmet and proper riding techniques. This will help the public see that cyclists are serious about safety and responsible riding.

I am glad that more emphasis will be placed on the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. Just having the discussion on mandating helmets will help educate the public. Every day I see people riding without helmets. A law is the only way to reach some of these people. Education will help provide information on riding safely. Safe riding plus a helmet is necessary because a helmet alone will not make you invincible to a car or truck.

TWBC Board Meeting

1993. The following items were
covered:

*Hazel Giddings gave an updated
Treasurer's report that included TWBC
income from the 1993 STP.

eCarla Gramlich reported on the
publication rates which she had
received from The Bicyclist Paper, and
how TWBC would inform that paper
of subscribing members addresses.
Tentative starting date is set for
January 1, 1994.

*Diane Lister reported on the agenda for the B.F.W. annual meeting on November 6-7, 1993. Included would be helmet legislation, Club ride dollar amounts per rider for B.F.W., and electing a new secretary. Diane, Carla Gramlich, Kent Wienker, and Bob Myrick will represent TWBC.

Sue Givens reported on attempts to find ride chairpersons. Brian Wester and Sylvia Russell volunteered to chair the Daffodil Classic, and Kent Wienker will chair the Peninsula Metric Century. Dates and prices of the two rides, insurance costs per rider, and the B.F.W. donation were discussed.

Carla reported on a Pierce County
helmet bill which has been initiated.
TWBC's promotion of this was fa-
vored, depending upon the exact
content and context of the bill.

*Carla also reported on the Mary
Bridge helmets to kids program. Club
members donations directly to Mary
Bridge for this purpose are tax
deductible, but donations through the
Club are not tax deductible.

The ride leader incentive program
was discussed, with no decisions
made. Carla would like to hear from
members on this, or members can
contact the Club secretary.

eSteve Lay reported that the number of new member patches is getting low. A motion was made and passed to substitute pins for patches. Designs were discussed, with the “smiling bicycle” in the Newsletter heading favored.

Publication Changes For
The NW Cyclist and The

Bicycle Paper Planned
by Carla Gramlich

During the budget process members expressed a desire to forego having the NW Cyclist sent to all members. The publication's recent change to include other activities in addition to cycling, and the cost, were given as reasons. The Board was given the task to investigate other options.

Currently, and through the end of this year, all members will receive a copy of NW Cyclist delivered to their home. Starting the first of 1994 all members will have the option of paying for a subscription at the re- duced rate of $6.50 for 11 copies per year. If your renewal is later in the year, and you do not want to miss the convenience of the paper delivered to your home, you can renew in January. The early renewal will prevent you from missing any copies. Members are reminded that NW Cyclist is available free at local bike shops and other locations.

Members will also have the oppor-
tunity to subscribe to The Bicycle Paper
at reduced rates. The low rate will
guarantee your copy and the conven-
ience of home delivery.

Both papers have many articles about local events for the bicycling community. The Bicycle Paper does provide local coverage of racing, along with a complete calendar of rides. The NW Cyclist provides articles on the local bicycle scene plus other outdoor

activities. Their calendar includes walks, runs, and marathons, in addi- tion to bicycling. Depending on your interests, you may want to subscribe to one or both. Members who want the paper(s) have the option at a very reasonable rate. This will also help the Club avoid raising dues for all members.

Creative Thinking Leads
To Good Ride Fee Rates

Yes, it is that time of year again. The TWBC begins discussions about next year's Daffodil Classic and Peninsula Metric Century. One issue that always comes up is how much to charge for the rides—how much to charge for pre-registration, families, and tandems. This Club is sophisticated enough to think of a creative ride fee rate.

A creative way to charge for a ride is to base the fee on the type of bike used by the rider. For example, charge $5.00 for Huffys and other generic ten speeds; $10.00 for Trek, Schwinn, Bridgestones, etc.; $15.00 for Cannon- dales, because their owners think they are better; $20.00 for Davidson and Kleins; $25.00 for other custom made bikes; and $50.00 for titanium bikes, because their owners are filthy rich, like our rich bachelor Bob Myrick.

Another way of setting the price fee
for the ride is by the weight of the
bike on the day of the ride. For ex-
ample, the lighter the bike, the more
the rider should pay. A bike which
weighs 40 pounds plus is carrying
spare tires, extra tubes, adequate tools,
spare parts, plenty of water, and extra
clothing. Therefore, a heavy bike
would not need any support. Just give
the rider a map and a bag of food.
This makes a lot less work for the
Club. A person riding a bike weighing
20 pounds is not carrying anything.
The Club needs to provide a lot of
support—food stops, water stops, and
a fleet of support vehicles to provide
tools and parts.

A creative pricing schedule will
show that the TWBC is a modern
thinking Club. Creative pricing will
also make registration time a joy.

were signed up to attend this social event. Yes, bicycle club members will do things that do not involve bicycles. Another great time can be had at the Holiday Party and Night Ride. Once you ride with this brightly lit group of cyclists, you will be back every year.

Several years ago, I gave my brother
and his family bicycle helmets for
Christmas. For people who ride on
rare occasions this is an item that is
appreciated, but not something they
would buy for themselves. If you are
not sure what to give someone, a gift
that will provide safety year round
may be just the thing. Other sugges-
tions could be bicycle lights, bells, and
a reflective vest. The new lights that
can be worn while bicycling or
walking and running are great for an
active person during the dark winter
months.

I was in San Diego for a few days, riding in the sun and mid 70s. I returned to Puget Sound and found that winter had returned. I had to find my winter cycling gear so I could go riding with the Club. Wheelmen are a hardy bunch that will continue to ride during the winter, but the rides tend to have an inside stop and are shorter.

Winter riding can be fun if extra care is taken in dressing for a ride. Ideas on how to keep hands and feet warm are always available from year-round cyclists. Dressing in layers with a pannier available for clothing adjust- ments is recommended. Don't hang up your bicycle during the winter. Go out for a ride.

Continental Crossings 6:00 p.m.

If winter riding does not appeal to you, check the ride calendar for other offerings. Now that snow is accumu- lating in the mountains cross country ski trips will be listed in the ride calendar. Non-Motorized Plan
In The Works

The Bicycle Federation of America
and Transportation consultants have
been selected by the Puget Sound
Regional Council to develop a non-
motorized transportation plan for the
central Puget Sound region.

I am a member of the Regional Council's Transportation Enhance- ments Committee, an advisory com- mittee of citizens focusing on non- motorized enhancements as defined by ISTEA (Intermodal Surface Transpor- tation Efficiency Act).

We have reviewed two rounds of funding for non-motorized projects, and now we will attempt to define a system for non-motorized transporta- tion. Assistance will be provided by local experts, like Bob Vogel of Pierce County, and Nathaniel Jones of Pierce Transit. The consultant will define a regionally significant non-motorized system, develop regional policies to advance such a system, and recom- mend actions to achieve a system.

Once again the TWBC is taking part in
the Tacoma Holiday Parade. We need as
many riders as possible to form a unit to
ride in the parade on December 3, 1995. The
parade starts at 5:00 p.m., and goes through
downtown Tacoma.

We will meet at 3:00 p.m. at Carla Gramlich’s home at 3218 N. 28th Street, Tacoma, WA., to decorate bikes and have a snack. We will then ride downtown to be ready for the start. Battery operated lights are available at Ernst, Target, and other area stores. Be creative!

- If you would like to meet downtown, our position in the parade will be available on the Ride Line (759-2800) as soon as the City Council lets us know. Be there by 4:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome. Bring the kids and
grandkids, as long as they can ride a bicycle
safely in a group. They will have a great
time. Be sure to dress warmly. Parades do
not move very fast, and it gets very cold.

After the parade you can stay for the City
Tree Lighting on Broadway.

by Bob Myrick, TWBC Annual Banquet Chairperson TWBC’s Annual Banquet is once again being planned to start the new year, an occasion recognized as the highlight of the social calendar. People cry to get in, and some cry to get out. Do not miss this one! All Club members are invited to our Annual Banquet. Our banquet is buffet style, scheduled for Saturday, January 20, 1996, at the Tacoma Mountaineer’s Club,

The banquet will start off with

refreshments at 6:00 p.m., with dinner about
7:00 p.m. This year marks one hundred
years of bicycle trail building in Tacoma,

and we want to rededicate ourselves to
completing new trails in Tacoma.

Dinner will again be catered by Grazie’s
Ristorante Italiano because I like their food.
We will have freshly baked breads,
Campagnola salad, Caesar salad, hot and
fresh seasonal vegetables, pasta primavera,
chicken parmagiano, and dessert.

After dinner, Louis Boitano will present highlights and lowlights from the past year’s riding. Send in your ride logs to receive a mileage certificate and recognition. There will also be a great slide show recalling our 1995 adventures. Contact Steve or Phyllis Lay (759-1816) to submit your best slides.

Well, I’m not sure where to start...-how about the 32 things every cyclist must
do (October 1995 issue of Bicycling Magazine). 1 have done 22 of the 32—how
about the rest of you?

The Methow Mountain Bike Festival in Winthrop was great fun. I guess I need
to be careful what I write; a couple of months ago in the Ride Notes I wrote a
short item about the Festival, and I mentioned that the Fat Tire Criterion had the
potential to be “road rash city.” Well, guess what, I flatted on the third lap of the
20 minute Crit and down I went ona corner with my flat front tire. Road rash
city! I ran the rest of the course to the neutral support provided by the Trek
Wrench Force van. The Trek mechanic handed me a new front wheel.
Unfortunately, it had a fat knobby tire on it, not a 1.5 slick like I had been
running. That made for some interesting bike handling for the remainder of the
race.

I was able to attain the goal I strive for in all my races—to finish and not be last! Saturday was a cross country ride and lunch. Sunday was the cross country race, which tested my limits. I think Reg was about ready to call for the EMT’s when I collapsed at the finish line. I was chasing a rider whom I had been dicing with all the race up to the half mile climb to finish. He finished three seconds ahead of me, but, what I did not know at the time was that we passed two other racers in our class on the climb, so I guess it paid off ina way I had not anticipated.

The TWBC was well represented at the NowBike auction, and we did our part financially. Bob Myrick was the proud winner of a belly dancing performance through the silent auction. Is that the entertainment for the banquet, Bob?

Have you ridden up the Chamber's Creek road recently? Someone painted the names of several pro racers on the road so it looks like one of the famous Tour de France climbs. I do not condone defacing our public roadways, but it’s great to see this sort of bicycling spirit in Tacoma.

So it’s fall, the days are short, the trails are muddy and it is cold and wet—time to hang up the bike for the season? No, it is cyclocross season! A few of us have been racing through the mud and hoisting our bikes over logs and other strategically placed obstacles. There have been club rides to the races for those who want to watch this craziness. Kent Wienker has been doing the club proud—he is fighting for a top three finish for the season in the Masters Category B. Good luck, Kent!

Congratulations to everyone in the club who attained their cycling goal for the season. It looks like we might have a record number of 2000 mile riders this

year. Way to go, everyone!

Fantasy Lights Volunteers Needed For Ride On December 19, 1995: For the last couple of years, Foothills Rails to Trails Coalition members have helped the Daffodil Classic by volunteering at the Buckley checkpoint. Now we have an opportunity to give them a hand. Every night for a week the Foothills members will provide volunteers at the inaugural Fantasy Lights in Spanaway Lake Park. They will receive a donation of $2000.00 for their efforts.

We need volunteers for December 19th, which will fill the slots the last night of the week. This will allow Rails To Trails members to attend their scheduled meeting. Volunteers are also needed on other nights, beginning December 13th.

The TWBC members who volunteer on the 19th will allow other members to see Fantasy Lights on their bicycles. I have arranged for a ride that will start at McDonald’s near Sprinker to see the Fantasy Exhibit. Volunteers will make this new Holiday Adventure possible for the other members, and their help will be appreciated. This help will also provide funds to help build the trail in the Orting Valley. Helmets On Wheels

The Helmets On Wheels logo has a name. HOWIE will begin appearing on bicycles for sale in Pierce County to educate riders that wearing a helmet makes sense and is the law. Helmets On Wheels has printed hang tags to be distributed to all businesses that sell bicycles.

During the past year, TWBC members
have helped sell helmets and provide
instruction for Bicycle Rodeos around
Pierce County. Helmets have been sold
for a bargain at $5.00, including per-
sonal fittings.

Jan Brame and Karen Forbush sold a
dozen helmets at a recent safety fair.
Sheila Pudists and Peggy Fjetland sold
and fitted 30 helmets at a similar event
in the Hilltop area. Fitting helmets and
sales were provided at the DARE ride in
August. In May, 33 helmets were sold in
Tilicum by Peggy and Dena Wessels.

Dena, Karen, Peggy, Steve Brown, Kent Wienker, and myself have helped at several bicycle rodeos over the sum- mer to provide bicycle education. Safety literature is also distributed with hel- mets at the rodeos. We were ready, but rained out, at the Tour de Pierce.

uals for this great service they are
providing to the community. More vol-

unteers are needed in 1996 to help with
events like those mentioned above. Call

Government Affairs
Committee

The committee met three times re-
viewing Pierce County’s draft non-mo-
torized plan. The last meeting was with
Bob Vogel, author of the plan. He has
taken our comments and is using them
to rework parts of the draft.

Pierce County and Gig Harbor have
proposed a new two lane road linking
SR 16 north of Gig Harbor with Peacock
Hill Road. The proposed first phase
builds one side with one sidewalk, two
12 foot lanes, and a 6 foot shoulder.

This design does not accommodate bikes adjacent to the sidewalk, so we have asked Council member Karen Biskey, Tom Ballard, County Engineer, and Mayor Gretchen Wilbert to consider adding a shoulder between the sidewalk and the lane to accommodate bicycles. Our contacts with them have indicated support for the safety improvements.

The committee decided to begin pro-
ducing TWBC information sheets for
use at transportation fairs, club events,
and other appropriate occasions. The
Cascade Bicycle Club commuter bro-
chure served as an inspiration for this
decision. Specific publications will be

approved by the TWBC Board members
prior to printing and distribution. Any-
one with an idea for an information
piece can call me or Bob Myrick about
this.

Senator Brad Owen has offered to meet with TWBC to inform us about legislation and hear our concerns. The committee will coordinate a meeting, possibly a regular club meeting. I am sure other groups will be interested in a bike related discussion with Senator Owen.

Bikes are fun, efficient, and SUSTAIN- ABLE transportation. The Sustainable Living Center, a fledgling organization embracing recycling, reduced waste, and environmental quality, adopted a name that seems to fit bicycling too. The group, based at the YMCA, has several projects, including an elementary school curriculum and creation of a facility demonstrating the organization’s prin- ciples. We are checking out how our club members might add their interest in bicycling to this group.

TWBC Board Members met on November 7, 1995, at the Skyline Village Apartments Recreation Building. Present were Dave Tison, Mat Reitzug, Dena Wessels, Connie Reitzug, William Hoehne, Bob Myrick, Karen Forbush, Kent Wienker, Steve Brown, Carla Gramlich, and Ralph Wessels.

Previous minutes were approved as amend-
ed, clarifying the ride year (April-December)
for insurance purposes.

Treasurer’s Report: Checking account
balance is $15,219.53. Receipts and expend-
itures for October were $347.74 and $907.46
respectively. Payment for the 1995 STP
checkpoint had not yet been received.

Vice-President: Mat will endeavor to
improve the varieties of food made available
at general club meetings.

Past President: Kent recommended he
receive a list of new members to be given to

Touring Captain: A Montana touring
group in Billings wants to trade newsletters.
The Board agreed to do so.

Ride Incentive Program: A suggestion was
made to provide lunch for a person who leads
a ride near or on their birthday (within a
week).

Ride Line: Bob Myrick asked about putting
our Ride Line number in the Mountaineer’s
newsletter, to increase ridership. Riders from
other clubs could be considered guests for
insurance purposes, assuming they comply
with Club rules for rides.

Government Affairs: Intensive review of
Pierce County’s Non-Motorized Plan maps
still has to be done.

made that would make improvements for ride
participants as well as local land owners and
the motorized public.

Special Events: The Holiday parade will
be on December 3rd. Carla is the Club’s
organizer.

The Daffodil Classic for 1996 still needs a
coordinator.

Ralph and Dena Wessels volunteered to
coordinate the PMC. The t-shirt design will
be produced locally by a new process to be
announced at a later date.

Steve Lay will plan the slide show for the
annual banquet if members give him pictures
of Club rides. Location is The Mountaineer’s
Club. Catering by Grazie’s. A theme is need-
ed. Any ideas?

Club Bike Racks: Carla suggested that the
Club purchase and place a bike rack in Ort-
ing. Other locations could include Bonney
Lake and Buckley.

1996 NowBike Calendar: More copy may
be allowed, and NowBike may provide cop-
ies of the calendar to the Club.

Helmets: The November issue of Bicycle
USA reported that helmets are required by all
cyclists on US military bases. This is consis-
tent with Club policy when our rides on on
Fort Lewis.

Mini-Minutes—
TWC Board Meeting

The Board of Directors met on
November 3, 1992. Present were
Greg Grenier, presiding; Carla
Gramlich, Steve Brown, William
Hoehne, Gina Grenier, Steve Lay,
and Phyllis Lay.

Phone bill: The mystery of calls placed from the ride line phone has been solved. Calls were forwarded from the ride line to voice mail. In the summer the measured rate limit was exceeded, and each call was charged to the ride line. The phone line will be changed from measured rate to regular rate.

Annual banquet: Bob Myrick,
Sylvia Russell, and Gina Grenier
are on the banquet committee.
Several locations were discussed. A
room for 75 people is planned.

Holiday party: Joyce Clifford has
volunteered to hold the holiday
party. She will put information in
the December Newsletter.

Club equipment: Steve Brown
will be the equipment manager. A
work party to fix signs and clean
equipment will be held. Steve will
also investigate ways to post signs
for rides.

Daffodil Classic coordinator:
Jim Davis will be the coordinator
for 1993. April 18th is the date for
the Daffodil Classic.

BFW annual meeting: Diane Lister and Bob Myrick will attend and represent our Club. Primary purpose is to plan the ride calendar for 1993. Expenses for attendees will be approximately $70.00.

Bike Expo: Sylvia Russell and
Brian Wester will be coordinators
for 1993. We will have our own
booth, and the location will be the
Seattle Center. The place used in
1991 has been remodeled.

New item: Bob Myrick
suggested the Club buy a case for
transporting a bicycle, to be

available to Club members. Several
questions pertaining to cost,
number, and funding were raised.
More information is needed before
action.

Trails And Transit
Projects Funded

The city of Tacoma, Pierce Transit, and the Pierce County Park Department recommended the following projects be funded out of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) enhancement funds. These funds are administered by the Washington State Department Of Transportation.

These projects have been funded:

Foothills Trail-McMillan to Orting. Sponsored by Pierce County and the city of Orting (right-of-way acquisition) for 2.5 mile segment (McMillan to Orting) of the planned linear park trail from Tacoma to Mount Rainier. Grant: $120,000.00. Match: $30,000.00. Project Total: $150,000.

Foothills Trail-Orting to South Prairie. Sponsored by Pierce County and the city of Orting (complete design and engineering) for 7.3 mile segment from Orting to South Prairie. Grant: $280,000.00. Match: $70,000.00. Project Total: $350,000.00.
