Centralia Ride, June 8th, 1975. A sizeable group of Mountaineers and
Wheelmen met at 24th & Pacific at 6:15 AM. Led by veteran cyclist, Lou Cantor,
we charged the Pacific Avenue hill, a fitting start for a 54 mile ride, I'm
sure, Those who survived the hill pedalled happily out Pacific Avenue, picking
up more riders on the way. By the time we reached the Roy Y, our group had
swollen to 29.

Between the Y and Roy, I spotted a perfectly good towel lying in the dirt along the side of the road. Amid cries of "Jack, I had my eye on that" from Ann Sumner, I quickly dismounted and scooped up the valuable towel, much to her chagrin. I saw several other interesting items along the road, but was unable to stop and investigate them for fear of falling too far behind the main pack. This stretch of roadway has the best scavenger picking anywhere around.

We had lunch at a beautiful picnic spot on the DesChutes River just beyond Rainier. Dan Feldhaus patched a leaking tire. Frank Weldon never did find the picnic ground, but he did find the way to Centralia O K. Right On, Frank!

After arriving in Centralia at about 2 PM, we checked in our bikes at
the train station and bought our tickets. Many of the members had never
ridden on a train and everyone was excited. Later we were told the train was
45 minutes late, so we wandered around town and ended up in a nice park, 2 or 3
blocks from the station. Some of the girls were squealing about caterpillars
dropping out of the trees on them. I watched Eldon Stratton sleeping on a
bench with his mouth open but nothing dropped in. Not while I was watching,
anyway
Then a nice train ride back on Amtrack that took exactly 68 minutes. All
in all, a fine outing and the credit zoes to Lou Cantor of the Mountaineers for
planning and leading a great ride. Thanks lots, Lou from all us Wheelmen!
