Redmond Ride, Sunday, March 14. Under the able Veadership of Racing Captain, gary Singleton, we met at the Tacoma Mall parking lot for car pooling which worked out pretty good. We ended up with ten bicyclists and only four cars, elthough I ended up driving my ancient truck all by myself. This was OK, but if I drive it over 45 or so on the freeway, thing: start falling off. nny Redmond 1s about 48 miles nerth of Tacoma, and

588-2245 j the Marymoor Park where we went is about a mile south elanen of Redmond. This is a vast park, probably a thousand 81S BRIDGEPORT WY. S.W. . &cres or more. There are countless ball fields and ae sections, Imt the main attraction is the bicycle race track. This is a concrete oval shaped track with steeply banked turns. Linds Prock’s 8 year old boy, Robert, was &@ little appre~ hensive about these steep slopes on the turns, and small wonder, As we headed into the turns, I would have sworn our bikes would tumble down the side leaving us to take a big bite out of the cement at the bottom. Getting a little speed up solves the problem nicely. You are forced to ride fast whether you want to or not while on this race track. After a turn or two, Robert was xciding around mear the top with the rest of us,

Somehow, Katie Wiegman got a flat rear tire on the first dap, which Steve

Newton quickly repaired. Handy man to have along on any club ride!

Bicycling with Jack(cont.) The day was spent at the track and riding around on the bike paths. Some were paved, others were just trails through the woods. At one end of the park there is a field devoted to flying radio controlled model airplanes.’ No kid stuff, this, but a very mature and moderately expensive hobby.

One trip took me up to the city of Redmond, a rather sleepy little town with
very little going on Sunday. After a picnic type lunch under a warm sun, we
‘headed back. It was a most interesting day, well spent and I hope that Gary will
iead another group up there soon so all the club members can see and ride on this
fabulous track.

Riders must register 15 minutes prior to the start of their event.

Location: Point Defiance Park, Tacoma, Wa. Enter main gate and follow signs
to 5 Mile Drive. Race starts at the top of Owens Beach Hill. The course is
23 miles, hilly, closed to treffic except 1/5th of a mile, which will be
controlled with the right-of-way to the riders.

Bring a picnic lunch to Point Defiance at 2:30 PM to congratulate our victorious
racers.

On March 21st, we pulled into
Donald, Oregon. It was the Donald
Road Race, the first race of the
year fo the Northwest.

The race started at 1:05 PM
for category 2, which I was in, and
1310 for category 3 which Happy
Payne and Phill Yost were in.
Happy's and Phill'’s race was 35 miles. Both were in breakaways throughout the
race, none of which were successful. That goes for all of the races that day.

So the finish was a pack sprint of about 20 with Phill taking 2nd and Happy in the front of the pack, finishing about 7th.

The First Aid Station was put to use when 3 riders in my group went down with road rash and cuts as the result. With 7 miles to go, my tire was getting low on air with a slow leak. I looked for someone with a spare tire but no one had one so I continued. With about 3 miles to go, I had about 30 pounds of pressure left ani was riding on my rim most of the time. I was in the back of the pack so as not to cause any problems on the corners, then up the last hill T saw this was the time to move. I pushed my way up to the front and finished 3rd.

There were 110 racers, about 35 in each category. The Tacoma Wheelmen were
well represented and did well.

Wednesday of each month, 7:30 PM, at the Swasey Library, 7001-6th Ave.
Dues are $3.00 per individual, $5.50 per family, with $1.00
