Joy Yancey's Memorial Day, Victorie teur was one of the most memorable and enjoyable outings in the club's history. Joe and Kate Cockrell, Frank, Dorothy, Connie, end Laurie Francis got an early start bieycling around Port Angeles Fridey. Henry, Nemcy, Ray, Ann, Joy; Kathleen, Ralph, Bob Dehike, Eldon, Virginia, Sharon, Bill Daugherty, Ruth Klopsch,end Frank got off on the erack of dawn ferry, and got to Victoria Just in time to ses sailboats lined up a8 far as the eys could see for the start of the Swiftsure race.

We immediatly went to the Charles Dickens Moter Inn to drop off our extra
clothing end headed towards Shownigen Lake. There were so many interesting
parks and sights along the way thet several people dropped off at every atop.
No _— went all the wey to the leke. ‘The return trip was 15 miles down hill,
whee!

Sunday wee Buchart Garden day. Stete Newton, Linde, Diene, Heidi, Ben,
Dorothy Keene, and Ruth Weldon, came over on Sunday afternoon and took right
off for the gardens. Joy's group had lunch at the Cock Pheasent, but Steve's
group arrived after 5 PM and couldn't get in without coats and ties. Well |

Monday waa downtown Victoria, shopping end the museum were featured.
Believe me, the only way to get around a large city ia by bicycle. Instant
transition from wwehicle to pedestrian and no parking problems made visiting
downtown Vietorie a positive pleasure.

Joy did a wonderful job and all of us hope she will arrange a similar
trip next year. .

Centralia ride tune 6, 1976. A small group of club members met at 2hth
and Pacific at 6:15 AM. The hardest part of this trip ie getting up at
5 AM in order to get to the parking lot on time. The next hardest part is
the Pacific Avenue hill. Led by veteran cyclist end mounteineer lou Canter,
we panted up the formidable starting hill in short order. Jf think the reason
Lou always starts his Centralia ride at the bottom of this hill is to weed
out sll dead timber right off and all he hes left at the top ere live wire,
gungho eycliatec eager to press on ta the 54 mile destination. All made the
hill and with a good North wind at our backs, we pedaled merrily out Pacific
Avenue. Picking up a few hill] shy club membera slong the way, we ended up
with 20 riders.

Near 84th street a dog charged out after us from the opposite side of
the street and was promptly hit by a car. Steve Newton shouted, "Don't stop"
go no one did. Glancing back I saw the dog under the atopped car barking and
yelping, then he got up and ran limping slightly back to where he came from
evidently not badly burt. ;

Beyond the Rey Y, I passed part of a revolver lying along side the road. Thinking the rest might be near by, I stopped and rode back only te discover that it was just a broken childs cap pistal. However at Reinier, I found a nickél in the store parking lot, so the trip wasn't a total lose.

We stopped for lunch at the beautiful picnic ground on the UDeschutes
River near Reinier. While we were there, a Sheriff car passed by end stopped
for a minute er two while the deputy loéked ue over, a motly looking bunch
I'm sure, but ft passed inspection because he soon continued on with-

Near Bucoda, Ruth Klopsch had @ flat tire. Bill Daugherty, riding her, belped her patch it while I enjoyed the hospitality of some nice people. Their home wes alongside the road and in the rear was @ stone stairway leading dowm to the Skookumehueck River. While I watched, three canges filled with laughing young people drifted by heading down stream. looked like fim.

South of Bucoda, I passed Jerry Aera and Ernie MeAtee, who had elected to bike back. For one mad mowent I entertained the notion of bicycling back, but sanity soon took hold and I preceeded on to Centralia and bought a train

The reat of us rode the train in comfort and safety, The home trip
took exactly 59 minutes, arriving at the Union depot at 4:30 PM with everyone
rested and refreshed and ready for the next big ride. A great ride lou, do
itcagein next year!

The month of June wag e rest month for us racing people, however June 20, 27 are the stete championships so I will have the results in the next newsletter. There was one nice race this month, June 6 was the Rose Festival rase in Portland. ‘There were the usual Tacoma ¥heelmen racers there. We ali had on our club jerseys, and the whole day everyone was saying how nice they looked. Heppy, Phil, and I were in Cat. 2. Happy and t van out of power during the race so we never finished. Phil atill had it and placed somewhere in the

middle of the packs In our race at the of a hill there was a gate and one
of the riders got his handle bars hooked on the gate and it swung him around,
It was quite a sight to see.

Tn the Jr. Novice race Steven Curry rode off t# take first place and Steve
Miller took a nice third. These two are getting very strong and are great
hopefuls for the Tacoma Wheelmen.
