Southworth, Fort Orchard ride May 6, 1s76. With the day dawming
sunny and mild, and the ride atarting at Southuovth, Frank “eldon and T
decided to ride over from Tacoma, a distance of about 29 miles. After
stopping for coffes at Gig Harbor, we proceeded on to Olalla, a quaint
little spot on Olalla Bay with a country store and gas station. The
killer hill coming up out of Olalla winds endlessly for at leest two
ailes, and its so steep in places that my bike was beginning to creak: and
groan, not to mention my lega and back. JI don't know how Frank fared as
he left me in the dust on the first slope.

After eating lunch on the beach at Southworth, we joined the rest of | the group and under the able leadership of Kethy Reilly, we set out on the ride. The route led owt along the bay shore on little used roads, mostly fiat and easy although ea little bumpy at times. By the time we had gone a mile or two, the weather turned quite stermy, with a heavy wind blowing. Small branches and twigs were flying through the eir and littering the roadway.

Rounding the point beyond Manchester, we hit the wind head om. It was probably gueting up to 40 miles per hour. You could almost see the pounds dropping off from rotund bodies and hear legs end thighs straining and popping vs backs bent for driving bicycles into this wurderous wind. Every time a heavy gust would hit, puffing riders were brought almost to a standstill. At one place the wind blew the winter accumulation of dirt off some roofs ani showered the happless bikers with eend and debris.

Out on the bay the water wes whipped into a froth of whitecaps and I saw more than one boat in trouble. Reaching Fort Orchard, we all had a GE 4 & Lohse aneack in 6 really nice family resturant. ba After leaving and unlocking my bike, I BICYCLE CRAFTSMEN OF THE WORLD discovered that T had forgotten to. pay my bill. I sneaked back to my table CHRISTIAN CYCLE where the check still lay beside my plate, WEST 27TH & GRANDVIEW then I walked nonchalantly to the ceshier

the wiser.

The return trip was something else. With the wind at our backs, all
you had to do was hold out your coat and you were home free. JT spotted
& penny in the middle of the big intersection coming out of town thet I
wes unable to retrieve, much to my chegrin. But leter on I pioked up
& perfectly good towel. ‘irginia Stratton, riding aheed of me, just
passad it by without even aseing it!

In spite of the wind, everyone had e good time. This was the most scenic bayshore ride the club has had end Kathy hes agreed to lead the ride aw in the near future for those who missed it.

The Tacoma Wheelmen placed well this month in races, with 3 first places,2 second places and 1 third.

The first race was Crazy Horse Road Race. Happy entered Cat 3,
Phil and I entered Cat. 2.

Cat. 1 Left first and the rest followed at regular intervals, and
somehow the cat 3 riders finished first, then the 2's and then the
l's. The cat 3's took a wrong turn, and in doing so took off 5 miles.
Cat 2 caught the Cat i's and they said they were just out for a
Sunday ride. Results of this race were: Happy took 3rd, Gary

finished first in Cat 2, and Phil finished somewhere in the pack.
Once again Phil made several break-aways, one being about 6 miles
long

The next race was Downtown Seattle 2 day races. The first day

was Pioneer Square or as we called it Seucide Couarse, it was .44

of a mi. with 6 corners. It seemed like everyone fell but more like
20 went down in crashes, some caused by people walking on the course.
Jr. Novice Steve Miller took first, with Steve Curry on his

wheel for second. The next day at Issaquah Road Race Steve Miller was again in the winners circle witha a first palce, Steve Curry

was again close on his wheel but fell, but still took a second. Happy, Phil and I entered Cat. 2, Happy had some bad luck when his wheel was hit, and he went down, I ended up with a 5th place.

Next was the biggie, Tha Portland Olympic Developement Road Races.
I entered but never finished.Phil also entered and came home with
a 9th overall in Cat 2. not to shabby when you consider the talent
that was there, racers from all over the Northwest, Calif. Utah,
Nevada, Colorado,and Missippi,were there all looking for a big
WIN.
