FORT LEWIS - SPANAWAY LOOP RIDE SUNDAY, NOV. 14, 1976

We have been getting great turnouts, for our Sunday bike rides. Even in a
pouring rain several weeks ago we had 15 gung-ho riders turn up in rain gear
for the ride. This Sunday was no exception. Including late starters, nearly
30 eager club members showed up at Villa Plaza.

Able leader and club President, Frank Weldon, broke us up into smaller groups which worked out fairly wel], Usually with such a large number of riders and a complicated route, the group gets strung out, some get lost, and confusion reigns supreme. It ‘wasn't toa bad this time. One rider, Paul Bonnar, wandered off the route and ended up in the town of Steijacoom, but he got back.

We were barely under way when Eldon Stratton had a flat tire. Just under
way again, after fixing his flat, his wife Virginia had a flat; This took a
little longer as he had already used his spare tube and this new flat had to
be cemented and patched. Eldon patched it up and installed it back on the rim
and pumped until he was pooped. Then he turned the pump over to me and I
pumped until I was blue in the face, but the tire still wasn't hard. We
decided the pump was haywire somehow, so we grabbed. mine and’went through another
round of pumping. Exhausted, Eldon decided there must still be another hole in
the tube so he pulled it out again and sure enough there was another hole about
a third of the way around from the first one.

A quarter mile up the road, Karen Dubois was stalled with a flat. Another one of those kind that was repaired but still wouldn't pump up.

During the long delay, we had fallen far behind, but had collected a number of stray riders until our small group numbered about 10. After a few false turns we headed through Fort Lewis and ran head-long into a rain shower. It didn't last long, however, and we soon proceeded on our way.

The route led out of Fort Lewis, past Gray Field and hit Highway 507 between the Mountain Highway and Roy. Here we ran into Ben Colby who was riding with Mary Ann Wilson, fixing a flat tire. There was plenty of help so we moved on. A mile down the road we found Stewart and Barbara Curry with a flat on their tandem. Their spare tube and patch kit were being carried by son Steve who was miles ahead somewhere. Frank stopped and helped them get going again. Frank also had two flats himself!B Ben had another flat before getting home. Jerry Aker also had one, making a grand total of nine flats for the trip. This beats our old record of five.

Stopping at Little Park restaurant in Spanaway for lunch we found that others had eaten and gone on, and others were still to come. After lunch we rode back, going behind McCord Field, through Woodbrook, and arrived in the parking lot before dark without further incident.

In spite of all the tire trouble, everyone was happy and found this a very interesting route. This ride is a must to do again, Frank:

Bob Branson was not so Tucky. Turning back at Fort Lewis so as not to miss a football game on TV, he soon lost his way in the maze of streets and byways on the fort. Completely lost, he hailed a passing taxi, threw his bike into the trunk, crawled in and ordered "Villa Plaza". Sounds like a good way to get back to the parking lot, especially in the rain!
