CLUB MEMBERS GUIDE TO BICYCLE SNOBBERY (by Ben Colby)
A beginners article, although some of the more experienced members may still find the advice of value. Disregard al] that silly crap about training, technique, and conditioning. This is what you really need to know if you are going to excel at. club cycling:
If you have a JACK TAYLOR, HOLDSWORTH, BOB JACKSON, CARLTON, ARTHUR METCALFE, ROM COOPER, GEOFFERY BUTLER or maybe a RALEIGH PRO: Always have sniffles, blocked nose, breathe with difficulty through your mouth. Be red of face and wear short hair. Call all women "luv" and hum Beatle tunes. (if veteran age, substitute "I'm Henry The Eighth, I Am, I Am". ) Spell tires "TYRES" and call sew up tires and rims "sprints" and "tubs". Talk endlessly of "The tradition of British craftsmanship" and "the close relationship between the craftsman —\ and the Reynolds factory." !
If you ride a COLNAGO, MASI, CINELLI, ROSSIN, or if you are really nervy, a BOTTECHIA or ATALA: Be extremely skinny. Gesture a lot. Drink wine with meals. Wear Campy cap everywhere, even in the shower, Fly into a rage at unfavorable comments. Hint darkly at uncle who can do contracts on people. Speak of "Artistry in framemaking".
If you ride a SEKAI, FUJI, NISHIKI, PANASONIC, AZUKI, or CENTURION: Look very intense, wear thick glasses, know lots of figures by heart. Memorize specs on Ishiwata or Super Champion tubing to three decimal places if possible. (Make them up if not). Carry a slide rule in jersey pocket. Use the term "tensile strength" at least once in every four sentences. Say Sugino chainwheels are the only sane way to ga. Same with either Sun Tour or Shimano derailleurs (but never both). Have a black belt in karate. Snap pictures with a 35mm SLR camera with at least three interchangeable Tenses. Drink ERG. =
If you own a SCHWINN PARAMOUNT: Develop strong southern accent (midwest will do ina pinch if extreme enough). Wear USA or Confederate Flag on red, white and blue warmup suit. Listen to country & western music. Speak out against socialism and moral decay. Keep bike immaculately clean. Have Schwinn Factory Trained and Approved mechanic do all the work. Speak of Sheila Young and Sue Novara, but stand up against road racing and show off riders. Be married. Strive for Good 01' American Boy image.
If you have a GUS BETAT: Similar to SCHWINN PARAMOUNT except fix your own bike. Add cajun overtones, Listen to Doug Kershaw. Drink chicory coffee. Lie a lot.
If you ride a STRAWBERRY, DAVIDSON, or RODRIGUEZ: Speak of frame fitting as the most important thing. Tell of endless hours of being measured and discussing your individual cycling style with the builder and watching your own frame being constructed. Refer to all
other frames as "production".
If you ride an EISENTRAUT: Have very long, straggly hair. Beard is optional but should be full, stringy and untrimmed. Never clean bike, clothing or body. Wear jersey from Calit- ornia club even if resident of Washington. Smoke dope. Own all of Grateful Dead's albums.
CLUB MEMBERS' GUIDE’ (con't)
Vegetarianism optional but strongly recommended. Badmouth USCF. Talk about advantages of
silver soldering. Change shorts and relieve self in full public view. Drink beer and "toot"
pt. Wear mirror shades.
If you have a PEUGEOT PX-10E, GITANE TOUR DE FRANCE, MOTOBECANE GRAND CHAMPION or any
MERCIER, SUTTER or ALEX SINGER: Don't say anything, it's a devastating reverse snob tactic.
Look at other's bikes appreciatively, say "It's the rider, after all, isn't it?". Pro-
nounce French terms carefully. Correct others' pronunciation with a quiet smile. Be
philosophical and CIVILIZED.
If you ride a TELEDYNE TITAN, WAJA or ALAN: No you don't. Nobody rides those things.
If you ride a "CHEAP" SCHWINN: Wear a disguise.
Each month I will be giving little hints on improving your riding and racing.
PEDAL ACTION: When you use the old push down-pull up style of pedaling, you are limited to
short distance and a siower pace. The cyctist that wants more out of his/her efforts snould
learn the circular pedaling method. This is where you not only push down and pull up, but
you also push forward and pull back, making a circular motion. This uses some other muscles,
thus taking some of the load off the normal "push down-pull up" muscles.
Good circular motion involves the following: ete There should be no noticible play in the crank and pedals. They also must be straight. Shoes must fit into the toe clips and straps with no slippage. Shoes must also have
