Traditionaly, the March NEWSLETTER should include a log of one or more of the
February rides. Looking at the February NEWSLETTER, though, I realize that I haven't |
been on any of the rides! Not since January, that is, and I believe there is some x
space available in the newsletter.to jog a January ride.

The Engine House #9 ride was one I have been hearing about since joining the club in October, It was as much fun as everyone said it would be. Officially, it

was called ‘ THE FOURTH ANNUAL ENGINE HOUSE #9 FIREWHEELERS FROSTBITE TOUR OF TACOMA AND- UNANIMOUS REELECTION OF THE PRESIDENT. We all assembled in front.of the Engine House #9 -for photographs before setting out. Can't you see our picture in some old antique shop many years from now? "T wonder who they are?" people will muse. "Look at those funny bicycles. How could they ride those?”

Oh, it was fun. Early in the ride, we rode on the sidewalk for a short distance. Strictly against the rules, I think. Bruce Spong, riding behind me, said "What if someone should come out of one of those doors now? THUNK, THUNK, THUNK, THUNK, THUNK." That made me laugh so hard, I nearly fell over!

Passing the Old City Hall, I saw Ben Colby standing on the corner. I thought he was directing us so I zoomed on by. That was the Tast we saw of him! Hours later, when he arrived at the Engine House #9, I asked where he had disappeared to. He had stepped for a cup of coffee, and when he came out, we were gonet He never picked up our trail again, so pedalled out to Pt. Defiance for the afternoon. Well, it was still a ride around Tacoma for Ben, and we're glad he made it back to the Engine House #9 for the wonderful hot drinks!

It was cold that day, January 9. Very cold. The hoarfrost was upon everything, and there was very little stopping for any reason. On one killer hill, though, I

stopped in the middle to eat a cookie and have some near-frozen water, It got me to - the top: That hill was like a long, winding staircase.

Jack and I took a short-cut back to the Engine House, through a field, on a path c~
the width of a bicycle tire. "He's definitely the most fun person to ride with", I
decided, all over again for the one-hundredth time.

Back at the Engine House, Win Anderson, our ride leader, and his family enter-
tained the lot of us in their lovely home. How we apprecialte the hot coffee and
wine that bubbled atop their beautiful iron stove. Win hosts one of the best rides,
it is true, and offers the finest hospitality available at his Engine House #9 on
Pine Street. What a fine day it was, and not so very far for me to pedal home,
when I saw the sun sinking in the West.

“POSTURE and‘ POSITION: This has to do with the length of your
handlebar stem, toe clips, the shape of your handlebars, and
the position and height of your seat.

You should know the measurements that fit*you and memor- ize them in the event you use another bike or get a new one. These measurements are 1) saddle height as measured from axis of crank axle to the top of the seat and 2) the distance from q ‘ saddle nose to axis of bar passing through the stem. SADDLE HEIGHT:, you should be able ; to place the heel of your foot on the pedal and pedal back- wards without tipping your pelvis. TOE-CLIPS: if you don't have any, get some. The ball of your foot should be over the axle. STEM LENGTH: touch your elbow to the nose of the

RACING TEAM: This year it looks like’a good turn out for the Tacoma Wheelman's Racing |
Team. This year we will have 14 racers.

The club has voted to let the racers use the profits from our race to our best a advantage. The money will be used to provide gas to some of the races and possibly for entry fees, The distribution “ill be decided prior to each race. Only recognized Tacoma Wheelman Club and .U.S.C.F. members will be considered.

MARCH IS THE START OF THE RACING SEASON
Training races will start March 6.

CLUB JERSEYS: We will be ordering our blue and yellow jerseys soon. If you want
to order one, contact me soon!

MINOR ADJUSTMENT CLASS: You can learn to take most anything apart and put it back ©
correctly in this class. Wear grubbies!

THE TACOMA WHEELMEN BICYCLE CLUB PRESENTS:
THis SECOND ANNUAL DAFFODIL CENTURY
WHiN: Sunday; April 24,.1977;.7AM to 7PM (RACIFIC DAYLIGHT SAVING TIM).

REGISTRATION: At The City Park“in Orting, Wash. on HWY 162; 40 miles south of Seattle, 9 miles south of Puyallup and 22 miles southeast of Tacoma.

ENTRY Fel: $3.00 for ages 16 and above. $2.50 for ages 15 and under.-A 50¢ discount will be given to entries postmarked on or before April 9th. A custom patch designed for this ride this year is awarded to all finishing riders. FOOD: Entry fee does not include food but there are restaurants, grocery stores and taverns throughout the area expecting you.

BREAKDOWNS: Sagwagons and mechanic's services will be available for emergencies only. Regular prices for parts. Labor free.

THE COURS&: Is generally level with a few-gently rolling hills the last
20 miles. Riders can again choose between 20, 50 and 100 mile rides.
THe WEATHER: Will be sunny and warm with beautiful views of Mt. Rainier
throughout the ride.

TRAFFIC: Should be reduced by 90% compared to last year because it is not the opening day of fishing season and we'll have our own communications system instead of the CB Club. Course will also be freshly marked & checked. SUGGASTIONS: Please use the back of your application to tell us now we can make the ride better and more enjoyable for all concerned.
