THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER - The preSident of a club has to keep in close touch with the active membership and be readily available to them for the duties ascribed to the office to be carried out effectively. My residence in Gig Harbor has somewhat compromised my availability, but my move north of Seattle makes my holding the office completely —~ untenable. I have no interest in being an officer in name only; hence, I hereby abdicate the office of President of the TACOMA WHEELMEN'S CLUB.

I have enjoyed the many companions and friends I have been lucky enough to meet
through the club and regret.the ending of these associations. I wish to all in the
club the best of luck! BOB DAHLKE

SECOND ANNUAL DAFFODIL CENTURY - The second annual running of the DAFFODIL CENTURY is planned for Sunday, April 24, 1977. The course opens at 7:00 AM.

The course will be open till 7 PM.. Meeting place will be at the ORTING CITY PARK, Orting, Washington. Food is not furnished, so bring a lunch if desired. There are restaurants and stores along the route for those wanting to purchase eats.

I had so many flat tires I simply couldn't make it to the starting point. It was already 3:15-PM and everybody was stamping their feet and angry because the ride hadn't gotten under way yet. Miles out, I no longer recognized anything and realized that we had lost our way. Jack glowered at me. Someone was firing at us. We were riding. through a war zone! "Ride faster! Ride faster!"

Wasn't that an awful dream? Such are my childish fears about leading the club on
a ride. .

Now the rain beats on my roof and I'm thinking about what a nice day we had, as I pour
a second cup of coffee and polish off the last of the oatmeal cookies that we shared in
the park.

Maps and cookies. Count on those if you ride with me. I never saw such a considerate bunch of riders in my life. Everyone pretty well stayed together, and those who did plan to go off in another direction let me know, to avoid the inevitable doubt and worry that a Tour Leader suffers.as the number of riders dwindles.

Old friends and new ones joined us today. Spring brings them like it brings the flowers and the birds. Everyone must meet Lisa Boyle, our new champion rider! She and her mother drove from Bremerton for their first ride with the club. The ride around Puyallup was a long distance for little Lisa, who hadn't ridden a bike that far, but

she made it to the end - through rain, headwinds and

bumpy roads - just like we knew she would! She enjoys

ice cream more than Chris Buckner and I put together,

too, as I discovered at a well-planned rest stop in Sumner.

Bruce Steward is back! Everyone knows Bruce. He's back, Raleigh cap and all! I love the exchange of greetings as he flies past me. "Hi, Mary Ann, how are you today?"

"Fine, Bruce. How are -" but he's gone, Out of earshot.

about exploring the area and slightly more proficient at map-reading. Jack advised

7~ me on the route, rode it with me in the planning stages, and then kept my cyclists

together by riding the rear of the tour. He deserves all the credit.

RACING WITH GARY by GARY SINGLETON

The Tacoma Wheelmen have been turning out in numbers to the training races in Issaquah and have done quite well. Steve Miller has been in two breakaways and has taken fifth both times. Dave M. took a first in Novice.

The Donald Road Race, held in Donald, Oregon on March 21, was the year's first race. Weldon Burk was a first-time racer. In fact, he had never even seen a bicycle race before, but placed first in| Vet class. Phil Yost, racing in Catagory I made a successful solo breakaway, placing 3rd. . Team work was the name of the game in Cat II for Steve M:, Happy and me. With three laps to go, the three of us were in the back of the pack planning our strategy. We decided Steve would make a breakaway on the 1 last 2 miles, with Happy and me blocking. About 2 1/2 miles from the fi ish, another es went ahead of Steve. He chased, with Happy & me blocking. Steve was 2nd and was 3rd.

Plans have been changed for our Daffodil Race. The site has been moved from the

downtown route to return to the Pt. Defiance course. Its the SECOND ANNUAL PT.

DEFIANCE CLASSIC, April 16, 1977. Time Trials also will be held on April 16, and

a road race at the Bonneville Sub-Station. ; -

Each racer will receive points, determined by how you place in each race. The “overall winner will be the racer with the most points. There will be an entrance fee, but we are not sure how much yet as it depends on the number of prizes we get.
