BICYCLING WITH MARY ANN RAINIER NATIONAL PARK - PART I

Jack planned a-wonderful day for us at Longmire. It was a bike
ride hike eat in eat out cook stove rock picnic type of affair. And
I didn't know what to expect.

When Jack's the leader, it's assumed that everything will be perfect, and it was. The cold, cloudy weather immediately turned bright when he led us off from Alder, and the long, gradual uphill

Parts & Repair For All Makes Of Bikes climb eventually and inevitably became a downhill glide.

RALEIGH - PEUGEOT At Longmire, we hiked the 6/10 mile to experience the mineral GCANUCK CANOES springs. Experience is the only word that comes to mind. Crazy leeraa ie Carl loved the CO, water. "Schweppes!" Beautiful description.

a | 588-2245 4 He'll be back for more. Gary drank the ferrous iron water froma a 8819 BRIDGEPORT WY. S.W. Planter's Peanuts wrapper and appeared to be enjoying it immensely.

Jack will try anything, even sulphur water, and express no reaction
whatscever - just a grin when he sees our distorted faces come up
. out of the well.

On the way back, we stopped to tour a short trail which depicted the 1947 mud slide. A
startling phenomenon it is, the extent of the destruction being accurately recorded in the
naked vastness of each lifeless tree.

Reality is fresh blackberry pie! Of course we weren't hungry by that time. Everyone had eaten lunch already. But the sign had registered in our minds on the hungry ride up to Longmire, so we all decided two by two and three by three that we would stop for blackberry pie and coffee at the Copper Kitchen. Gayle had a great idea for a special ride up there sometime just for that pie! Hunger assuaged.

Everybody sailed back to the parking lot, where the bikes were loaded reluctantly, it seemed, their riders not wishing the day to end.

Part If is from Longmire to Paradise, perhaps in October, or whenever the prospective tour leader jumps down from that fabulous mountain.

RACING WITH GARY

Over the weekend of May 21, 22 was the Fairhaven 2-Day ee. e BT AY Niger” AF he Bicycle Race. Club members that attended were Dave Maurmann, BICYCLE CRAFTSMEN OF THE WORLD

Steve Miller, Happy Payne, Steve Curry, Bruce Stewart and CHRISTIAN CYCLE

Gary Singleton. This race was the selection race for the =

Canadian Junior National team so it brought.racers from as WEST 27TH & GRANDVIEW

far away as Quebec. Needless to say, it was to be a tough TACOMA, WA 98466

racing weekend.

Saturday the road race was held on a hilly course.

Our Junior racersdid not have a good day. First, Dave was caught behind a wreck. Then
Steve C. and Happy were both involved in a wreck. Later on Steve M. punctured. In Cat-
agory 2, my race, we dropped about half the pack on the hills. The finish was a mad
sprint with me coming across 2nd.

Sunday was the Criterium. The course had one hill, only 2% blocks long, but very,
very steep. It was the type you put it in your 42-20 gear and still had to stand on
it. The course was only 3/4 mile around so you would just get up the hill and coast down
around the corners and then there was the HILL again. You might call this kind of a hill
a sprinters hill. This is why I liked it. I would be able to pass people on this hill.
’ Tt wert to all the work to stay in and even made it up the hill second on’ the last lap
just to get myself boxed in on the end sprint. JI took 6th anyway. The rest of our
racers did not finish their race due tc the fact all the Canadian Juniors were giving it
their all so they would be picked for the Junior National Team. They started with 35
racers and finished with 9. We all got colds on Saturday from the rain and sunburns
from the warm sun on Sunday! ;

TRAINING RIDES - Almost every evening we have training rides going from 20 to 40 miles. If you want to improve your riding, come along with us.: Every Wednesday we ride in Pt. Defiance Park. This is an excellent place for the fastest and slowest of riders. You can always wait or take short~cuts. For more info, call Gary at 474-6590.

PUZZLE - Find the listed words in the diagram. The words run in a straight line, foreward, backwards, up, down, and diagonally. See'the sample, RIM. Draw a circle around each word you find. Solution will be in next month's newsletter.
