BICYCLING. WITH MARY ANN BRUCE STEWART LEADS A RIDE! (by Mary Ann Wilson)

Ferry Landing, 9:00 A.M.
"You didn't tell me he's leading the ride!"
"Oh, no, you mean he's leading today? Why didn't someone tell me?!" ea
"He'll be here in a minute. I saw him doing 45 down the hill into Ruston -. on

his bike, of course ---~-"

He was already at the ferry dock, wearing his Raleigh hat, stocking feet, carrying his racing shoes --- after that, we only saw him a couple of times, zooming past, perhaps on a second and third lap around Vashon Island.

_Slow down for the tourers: ; Jack arrived on that beautiful Paramount, looking like the Protagonist ina Steinbeck novel, a red bandana replacing his familiar green cap. There was some discussion over whether his newest find along the side of. the road was aquamarine, glass, or as he insisted, a star sapphire. His dog bites have healed, everyone. Ask him to tell you the story! It is club lore, but a treasure best told by Jack.

Let's get across to the island: '

What a surprise to see Ken waiting for us on the other side! He took an earlier boat, thinking - I don't know what, because we were all climbing the hill by that time. One of thousands of hills. Big hills, little hills, rolling hilis, hills that went all the way up into the telephone wires. What's on the other side of the hill? "Water.

"Land." "Water." "Land." "Water." --- "Water." i For a while, I rode with Gail. Gary thinks he can't pull those hills, but he was already way ahead of us by that time. Her bicycling outfits are so pretty! And the

cut-down corrugated pack on the rack completes the color scheme. The French's mustard ad sported the same colors as her White Stag warm-up suit! Interesting draft.

Eventually, we became scattered like silly putty all over the island, now and~ then running into one another like Floating electrons===--= : -_, "How can one get lost on an island?" we queried-----

Ferry Landing, 3:10 P.M.:
We all made it back!

Jack was left to lead whoever wished to follow him, I understand, and knowing my past experiences, his tour of the island was a famous one.

("Some fine tour leader you are!" I can still hear Carl bellowing).

Steve and Phyllis conducted a very civilized tour for themselves, including the perimeter of Maury, followed by the entire route around Vashon.

Mick, Laird Hail and I dropped down to Maury Island for a tour, not being tired or hungry at the designated restaurant stop. The three of us had a wonderful day. Laird fascinated us with stories of his life at Sea, explanations of many natural Phenomena on our route, and quiet, peaceful comradeship.

Now and then Bruce and Melody would whirl through our little sphere, and much
Shouting and loud laughter would ensue.

I loved the day. Take us to an island,

The day was beautiful. Hot and blue and green _ n
plaid while I tasted salmon berries and encountered eee
stinging nettles for the very first time. A fast
conclusion: baking soda should be part of a long distance tour pack. Use it to brush
your teeth, clean pots and pans, counteract heatrash, rim your tires, and nevtralize
stinging nettles!

When you're through eating those salmon berries, come join Bruce, Melody, Laird, Mick and me under the lighthouse at Robinson Point.

JULY 10 8:00 AM Meet at Swasey Library for car pooling to Ft. Warden State Park at
port Townsend. Leave Ft. Warden at 10:00 AM for a scenic ride around the park, Port
Townsend and rear countryside. Bring a sack lunch. Ride will be about 25 miles,
but will take several hours because of sightseeing.. Ray and Ann Sumner are the tour

July 24 7:00 AM Meet at Swasey Library to start the FOURTH ANNUAL HAVEN LAKE RIDE!
Bring your lunch for the 45 mile ride. Dinner and refreshments will be furnished

by the club. Free for club members, $3.50 for non-members. Bring your swim suit. Those who wish can ride back or there will be trucks to bring all back in the evening. Tour leader is Eldon Stratton - 472-1374

July 30-31 Arrangemants have been made with the Seattle American Youth Hostel to

host the Tacoma Wheelmen on the weekend of July 30-31, when we attend the "nationals"

races. A common room will be shared, the cost of which is $3.25 plus tax per person. cr Bring your sleeping bag and air mattress. For further details, please call Mary

RACING WITH GARY a

The state championships have come and gone. The Tacoma Wheelmen once again have a member to represent us. Weldon Burk placed second ir! the Time Trial. They ‘take 2 places in each class. There was no one from our club that placed in the track or road race.

In the road race, all club members that entered looked good. Senior men had Doug Turner
ad Gary Singleton in their 114 mile race. Junior men included Steve Miller, David
Maurmann and Steve Curry in their 76 mile race. Veteran men had a 47 mile race that
included Weldon Burk. ,

The NATIONALS will be here in Washington in July, and since we now have someone from our club going, let's plan to be there to watch our man do his best.

June races included the Rose Festival Races in Portland. ‘We all had our problems
and did not do well. Tour of the Windy City: We saw Steve Miller take 8th in catagory
f-IT on a very hilly course with a 3% mile mountain pass.

There are races every Wednesday night at SIR (Seattle Int'l Raceway) at 7:00 PM. There are two classes: slower racers and another for fast racers.

Mark your calendar for July 12th at 7:00 PM till 9:30 PM.
This is the time you can clean out your storeroom of the old bike
things you don't use any more. The Tacoma Wheelmen are holding
a swap meet at Steve Newton's home, 634 N. Howard, just north
of Swasey Library. You must be a Tacoma Wheelmen member to
sell things but anyone can purchase any or all! There is no
fee and all the money you make is yours. If you would like
to sell things, call 474-6590 and ask for Gary or Bev.
Only bicycle related items can be sold or bicycle
camping equipment. All items must be your used things.
