Racing this year is almost over and now it istime for cyclo cross racing. There will
be several races this year in Seattle. We are also working on having some races here in
Tacoma for which there may be prizes from Singleton's Cycle. : eT

Club time trials are beginning again this month. Prizes from Singleton's Cycle may
also be awarded at these.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Barry Laessig thought it was a joke when a policeman pulled him over to the curb. Laessig was riding his new bicycle.

it was no joke, however, and the officer gave Laessig a $35 ticket for going through a
stop sign.

Laessig had violated Pennsylvania's new Motor Vehicle Code which requires bicyclists

_to observe the same traffic laws as motorists.

The only difference is that the fine for running a stop sign on a bicycle is only $10, not $35. A police sergeant in the 35th District, said “the officer may have erred in the fine" and suggested Laessig contact the city's traffic court.

"] think it's ridiculous," Laessig said. "What about

a 10-year old kid? Are they going to fine him?"

Police said they aren't going after every biker, only ~
those who cause problems for police and motorists. =

BICYCLING WITH MARY ANN _ A TOURIST'S VLEW OF THE RACES by Mary Ann Wilson

a "This is a long race, but you don't need that much stuff!" Alan, Mary Hall, Mick

and I had a ball planning our weekend trip to Seattle. ‘We're car-pooling to South Center",
I said. We all looked at each other. None of us has a car! Well, the fewer people that
go, the less structure the ride needs to have, so we packed our lights and met at Swasey
at 9:00 A.M.

Pulling into Swasey, I crashed against the curb and was sent sprawling on the asphalt.
Watch out, riders, that curbing is the same color as the pavement! By the time I finished
cleaning myself up and checking the bike for damage, the others had decided that Vashon
Island would be the route to take.

It was a nice ride - especially coming down the hills. From the Fauntleroy ferry
landing in Seattle, a bike route leads right downtown to the Youth Hostel where we held
reservations. We marvelled at the signs - MOTOR VEHICLES YIELD TO BICYCLES - gleaming
in the sun.

The Sea Fair parade was assembling in Pioneer Square. The dazzle of pirates, clowns and jewelled floats captured us quite by surprise and much to our. delight! The enchantment lasted far into the evening; the early morning races were’ quite forgotten. .We tacitly agreed not to awaken each other in the early AM.

Races are so exciting! The sun was high when we arrived at Seward Park, and the
Junior Men's division was on the last few laps of their race. We recognized some of our
friends from the Cascade Club, and found little clusters of Wheelmen milling er too.
Eric and Dana, Ernie and Kirk were there, Gary Singleton. and this, —
racers, Barb, Weldon, Mark and Elaine.

Gary knows all the technical terms for what happens in a .. race. All I know is what I see, and I thoroughly enjoyed the "Nationals" Races! For the beginning of the Senior Men's race, we rode our bikes to the top of the murderous hill that every-

y->ne has heard about by now. ~Every 8 minutes of-so,~ the pack-————=— ' sould zoom around again. It was amazing to watch them! After seeing the uphill grind several times, we moved to a downhill _ section for a few laps, then to a hairpin curve. Lampposts, mailboxes and all stationary objects at the curve were padded with haybails. When the racers fly around there, the: spec- tators instinctively move back! Farther down the course, was a series of two right -angled curves. To maneuver around those required great skill. One can judge the racers' speed by watching the Campy truck that follows. The darn thing had to take the turns on two wheels!

Down to the finish line to watch the end of the race. Great excitement generated through the crowd as they converged into the path of the racers. By now, the original pack of 115 riders had dwindled to 25. Everyone wanted Mark Pringle to win, but Wayne Stetina had already gained a solo break-away in the last five laps.

Around and around they went, and it was finally announced that the last la was underway. The excitement of the final sprint happened only for Mark Pringle, David Ware, and Dale Stetina, the second, third and fourth place winners. 1 will never forget the winner, Wayne Stetina, sailing over the finish line with his hands raised in jubilant victory!

WHEN: Sunday, October 2, 1977; 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WHERE: Yelm WA.; Intersection of Hwy 510 and 507; 27 miles south of Tacoma, and 16 miles southeast of Olympia.

ENTRY FEE: $3.00 for ages 16 and above. $2.50 for ages 15 and
under. A 50¢ discount will be given to entries post-
marked on or before September 9th. A custom patch
designed for this ride will be awarded to all finishing
riders.

COURSE: -Generally flat with a few moderate hills. Riders can choose between a 50km, 100km, or 200km ride. The , course will be freshly marked and checked.

DOWNS: A sagwagon will be provided for emergency use.
