RACING WITH GARY
"HELP"

We are looking for one or more sponsors for the Tacoma Wheelmen's Racing Team. The
name of the sponsor will appear on our racing jerseys. As our racing team trains all over
this area and is very active in races throughout the Northwest, we could act as "moving
billboards". a very effective form of advertising. If you can help, please call
Gary Singleton, 474-3523.

SECRETARY'S NOTE: A motion was passed at our December 15, 1976 General Meeting, permitting
the acceptance of outside sponsorship for the Tacoma Wheelmen racing team, should a sponsor
be found. 13 favored this motion, 8 opposed.

GET STARTED IN RACING

We are starting our Time Trial and Cyclo Cross series now and it will most likely
run until January. The Point Defiance Time Trial is the same one we had last year,
meeting at the top of Owens Beach hill. There is a chain across the road and a sign,
"Bicycles Only".

The Miller's Field Cyclo Cross is at Steve Miller's house, 4520 Orchard. His house
is on the West side of the road, across from Lunberg. There are only five houses along
the road, the rest being open field.

The Time Trial at Hilltop is flat, in an area closed to cars and on very good roads. We meet at Gary Singleton's at 11:30. For directions to Singleton's call 474-6590.

If it is pouring rain, Time Trials will not be held. It it's off-and-on rain, eall
Gary. Cyclo (ross, however, will be held no matter what happens. It's even better if
it rains. Then it's more fun!

The first race was the Category 3, with Dave Maurmann entering.
Unfortunately, he didn't place. Category 2 came second, with Happy Paine
and Steve Miller entering. Happy had some bad luck that weekend. His rear
derailleur got caught in his wheel, broke off, and was pulled into his
front derailleur.

Steve rode near the front the entire race, going with several early
breaks. On the last lap, he jumped on the back stretch, dropping all but
one rider, Steve kept the pressure on until the
finish, managing to hold off the other rider and
win the race. Fe Sisvice Bresel

Gary's race was last; just as it started, so Sk Ile os
did the rain. Gary was a victim of the tactics of
Robert Wilkins, one of the West Coast's strongest
riders, who literally powered around the course,
burning off many riders just by keeping the speed
so high. £39-1325,

After an almost sleepless night (due to a
group of noisy drunks who played loud music on
their radio) we awakened to the sound of pouring rain, which put quite a damper
on the festivities,

Jon Miller and Tod Maurmann raced first in the Midget Novice race. On the first corner. everyone but Jon and a little kid (who was in a different category) crashed. Jon won, with Tod chasing and ranking second. :

Dave's race was the first I'SCF race of the day, all of which were "miss and
out" races, where the last man on every other lap is taken out of the race. Dave
stayed near the front the entire race and won the final sprint, thus winning
the race. ‘

Steve and Happy raced next, Happy being one of the first to be pulled from the race due to a flat tire. Steve stayed near the front until the number of riders was down to three. One man crashed, leaving Steve and one opponent who won the last sprint, leaving Steve in second place.

In Gary's race, as in all the others, there were numerous crashes. Gary managed to avoid the crashes but still didn't place in the prizes,

The last race was a team relay. Each rider rode one lap around the course and then gave his front wheel to the next rider, who did likewise. Happy started, but crashed on the first corner, thus eliminating us from the competition.
