Believe it or not the Tacoma Wheelmen's (lub has survived five years! It began with the conception of reinstituting the club of the elite Tacoma Wheelmen of the 1890's to the present successful club. In 1973, Pat Stratton had an idea (it was really his

Uncle Eldon's) that Tacoma was ready for a touring and racing organization. The meetings

were held at the T.(.C. Library initially, then moved to Swasey Library which is now our
home.

The new year brings many opportunities for improving bicycling. An important one is the Department of Transportation's concern for Bicyclists! frustration in not being able to get to Olympia without traveling 60 miles! They are studying the feasibility of opening the shoulder of 1-5 from the Dupont interchange to the North Nisqually interchange, a distance of 2.3 miles. They would also add 4.5 miles to the present 1-5 stretch near Woodinville and a 12 mile stretch from the Vantage Bridge to George plus a stretch near Spokane.

It is rewarding to know that some things take time but eventually happen. I reported

his dilemma to the Highway Department last year at their hearing on Bicycling and for
hnree years at Legislative meetings.

BICYCLE REPAIR AND DISREPAIR SESSIONS CONTINUE ja at Frank Weldon's house the second and fourth Tuesdays of this winter month of February. Learn how to dismantle a whole bicycle by dropping the wedge nut into the frame, how to replace a ball- bearing race upside down, how to adjust your derailleur when several components are missing. Cook your chain in 90-weight oil over a direct flame, if you dare; install grab-ons without remembering to secure the derailleur cable to the handlebar.

Frank and Ben will let you do whatever you want, then suggest timely alternatives to the impending horror.

Wow! Did we ever have a turnout on New Year's Day! Frank, Ruthie, Jack, Dan Feldhaus,
Ben, Lisa, Kathy Reilly, Karen, Chris, Rosanne, Gene from Massachusetts via Fort Lewis,
Mark, Elaine, Ken and Mary, Mick and me.

It was a sunny, pleasant day for the Tacoma Frostbite Ride. Since I've lived in the West, I've been trying to convince people that when it's 0° and the sun is shining on the snow, it's much more pleasant than 40° and raining. Someday they'll understand. It has to do with the dampness getting in one's bones.

Mick's such a devil. When he got to the hill at the end of Tacoma Avenue, he led the whole gang down! I kept yelling at them that they weren't supposed to go down there. I yelled and yelled as they zoomed away, then turned to Chris and said in despair, "They weren't supposed to go down there. I know Mick didn't lead them down there, because we drove it in the car yesterday ind it's just a dead end!"

Chris and I turned and went up North 6th to Yakima.
"This is the way we're supposed to go. They'll find their
way out of there somehow, and we'll meet them at the
restaurant."

Chris goes crazy riding with me. He circles around vim Crapjet 11903 Pactig ave. | ANd around waiting for me to catch up. For a while I ern empee! Li crea! wished I'd gone with the others to see where in hell they'd

end up. I kept thinking "Shucks, now how am I going to
write a story?" Then the best thing that ever happened - HAPPENED! Chris ran a pile of
glass! He made excuses about how he never runs piles of glass as he rubbed his front tire
with his glove.

Then, still rolling, he climbed half off his bicycle, and standing in one pedal, used his free foot to scrape the rear tire clean! I never saw anything so funny in all my life. "It works," he said.

I couldn't wait to tell the others what he did. If we ever could find
them again!

About fifteen minutes after Chris and I arrived at King's on Pearl Street,
the others started showing up from all different directions. Everyone has
their own way of getting across Tacoma!

"That was a little bit of sadism on my part," Mick said when I asked him if he had intended to go down that hill. "I knew they'd have to climb out again.”

Frank climbed the monster twice, looking for me and Chris. "Two or three
more of these, then we can start the ride!" said Dan Feldhaus before he dis-
appeared for the rest of the day.

We were so organized coming back along Ruston Way. Nobody got lost or killed or ruined on the Railroad tracks. Elaine stopped to look at the water. I whizzed past and thought, why don't I do that? I used to always stop and look at things, now I'm just turning into an old stodge. My feet were freezing. Someday I'll wish I'd stopped and tried to examine the whole Northwest a little more closely.

But I'm so anxious. So anxious to be done with the things I have to do and then

In 1965 the record for slow cycling was set by Tsugunker Mitsuishi of Tokyo by staying
stationary for 5 hours 25 minutes. This seems to have discouraged competition in the slow
cycling sport.

In track racing (sprints) staying stationary is sometimes part of the race. A few years back there was no limit on how long you could stay stationary and in one race they did so for a few hours. The reason for doing this is that in a sprint there are approx- imately 30 laps (it depends on the size of the track), yet only the last lap is the "sprint". By remaining stationary you hope to catch your opponent off guard or make him or her take the lead and break the wind. If he looks the other way or is concentrating on the stand rather than you, you can jump. That's all it takes sometimes.
