This is the best our team has ever done. 1 am sure we would have done even better if Phil "the jinx" Yost hadn't crashed and injured himself, not to mention a poor dog, = the day before the Road Race. Phil is our top Senior Road man and the course and distance of the State Championships are especially suited to his talents.

Gary and Happy have really been excelling on the track. Gary was sick the-week of the track championships, unfortunately. While Happy was in Oregon for Rose Festival, he managed to have his track bike stolen. Have you ever seen an eighteen-year old

totally crushed?
David, Jon, Tod and I are going to the Nationals in Milwaukee. As the readers of

last month's "Newsletter" know, I was in Colorado during the beginning of June for the
Junior Worlds Team selection races. Unfortunately, I had terrible luck. Most of the
top riders from around the United States were there and I now feel that I have extreme-
ly good chances for a top placing at the Nationals.

BICYCLING WITH MARY ANN
TOWN TOURS

We meet every Thursday night at 7:00 PM, rain or shine. 1£ we didn't ride in the
rain, after all, we'd never ride!

Every ride we take in Tacoma is different. There are so many streets winding this
way and that, in and out.of little dream neighborhoods, along break-neck highways, around
waterways and over railroad tracks.

They're fun. The pace is easy and every week there are new people to ride along and chat with. Our first ride of the season began at Green Firs Village. The others were just riding away when Mick and 1 pulled into the parking lot. Late again. Jack yelled some instructions that were lost to the wind. Later, we found out that they had turned down toward the Sound. Mick and I turned away from the Sound and made a return trip along Mildred. I was amazed to see a beautiful farm nestled down in a little valley below Mildred Street. Someone must have fought to hang on to that, even with all the busy highways crawling all about. I got to see Mick spray some dogs with "Halt". It really brought out the sadist in me. They go wild and bury their noses in the dirt while we ride away laughing.

Gary and Gail led their annual "cookie ride" around Point Defiance five-mile drive. It's fun to watch Frank draft the cars. This particular evening, there weren't enough motor vehicles to drive us nuts, just enough for Frank to latch onto! We went back to Gary and Gail's house for cookies and tea and lots of socializing.

Steve found the prettiest parts of Lakewood and took us there from Villa Plaza.

I had always thought Lakewood was just busy streets with no sidewalks and plenty of drive-in shopping. We went down tree-lined residential streets with little traffic,

past Steilacoom Community College, to Steilacoom Lake. It's so pretty there, with the tall poplars in the distance. My brother and his wife joined us for that ride. They

just loved it. John found it was the first time in a long time that he completely

forgot the current pressures of his job. They'll soon be bicycle addicts, too! The — kids wanted to come, and thought we should borrow Bruce's carriage to pull all three

of them! They ended up with a babysitter, but each will have a turn to come on a

Thursday night ride. .

Jack's rides run so smoothly. Not a thing can go wrong! He yelled at me and Virginia to take our rain gear off, then set out for Wapato Park. We stayed five minutes, then took off for the ice cream store on the pretense that we were cold!

We sat around the Dairy Dell and watched serious rain clouds roll in, then headed back along the old Tacoma Airport. A great vide.

I love the Thursday night rides and now have
weeknights planned to center around them. (No
more coming late!) Everybody have a quick supper
and come join the fun! Bring your dimes. The cars
may run out of gas, but we'll never run out of ice
cream joints to stop at!

Wao l PATCHES

Bob Branson's 1979 Daffodil Century is already taking shape! The Club needs a new design for the fourth year Daffodil Patch. Four daffodils won't quite fit on the traditionad three-inch patch, so a design that depicts the overall ride is being sought. Bob has suggested a scene that includes Mount Rainier. The patch will remain three inches round, and sketches should be sent to Bob Branson by the September General Meeting. In the past, we have taken the most pride in patches designed by club members! mw
