Hawk Eye did it again! He led us to the most beautiful place on earth! We left Port Angeles at 8:15 A.M. May 27th in a pouring rain. The ferry was crowded, steamy and wet. The view was a misty one, and on arrival at Victoria, my fingers were frost-bitten from my windy place on the deck. —~ The Empress Hotel is really a sight to behold from the harbor. I imagined it was a nice downtown hotel like those in every great city, but I never suspected such a spectacle of turrets, gables and towers! It is magnificent.

Check-in at the Daffodil Inn went smoothly, with only.a slight shuffling about of
those who wanted kitchenettes. Mick and I had time to gobble a tuna sandwich out of our
pack before the others announced that they were ready to ride! My feet had just thawed
from the-ferry ride.

Up on the first hill of our Marine View Drive, the sun peeked out, and it turned into a beautiful day. The drive is so pretty with gor- geous homes and beach view all the way. I won- dered who lives in those homes, and what their ives are like. Thought for a minute how I'd like to live in a place like that, then decided L probably wouldn't get along with the neighbors. laving to put on a continual show of wealth would make me very unhappy. A shack on the each and living out of a bike pack sounds more enticing.

Where are the other riders while I'm lost in thought? Battling a head wind that forces us to pedal furiously even on the downhills! We made it to Beaver Lake, and realized it was near dinner time, so headed back along highway 17. "Frank brought us on the highway just to show us that freeway riding with the wide shoulder isn't so bad," ick told me. I guess he's right. On secondary roads the cars are doing 55 mph, too, but the bicyelist doesn't have the protection of a shoulder.

Sunday was just as sunny and cool as a bicyclist could wish. Everyone was headed
for the fabled Butchart Gardens. It was so peaceful and beautiful there. I would go

again and again. July must be the month the roses are in bloom. One can only imagine _~how beautiful they will be, growing in patterns of color around and over the arbors.

Ben, Diane, Mick and I enjoyed "High Tea" before descending back to town. High Tea is quite fabulous, though not served as formally as in yesteryear. I was glad of that, as wo all appeared in our bike togs! Pedaling back to town, the Royal tummyache started from all those delightful and decadent crumpets, tea cakes and shortcakes, etc.

Sunday night and I was dying to explore the town! Mick
and I dressed up for the promenade, and hurried downtown to
see what's there. There's a bitter, freezing wind off
the harbor! And that's about all. We took refuge in
the Empress for hot coffee, then ran back to the Daf-
fodil just as fast as we could, taking in every shop
window at a flash. I will never arrive in Victoria
without a wool suit again!

On Monday we shopped. It's nice to see the local women dressed in suits, hats and gloves. I had thought it was a lost era. The shops we found to be award-winning tourist traps, with lots of pretty things that one could never use. Not to say there aren't useful things in Victoria stores. One would need more time to become familiar with the merchandise.

We're anxious for the next trip when we will plan to take in a museum, see the gardens
again, and perhaps do a little camping at Fort Victoria. The best part of the whole week-
end was the whole weekend. It's really nice to get away for a while, take a boat ride,
not think about what's going on in the Insurance world or the Medical world or whatever
world you're currently mixed up in.

Mick picked my bike up to carry it downstairs, and water dumped out all over his

pictures when they saw the inevitable flowers stuck in my water bottle. The daisies and
clover got through customs and back to Tacoma, where they sat on the windowsill until I
was well into my daily routine again.

The Tacoma Wheelmen have now entered into a new field of racing, track racing. Happy Payne and Gary Singleton are now racing track for the club, and it looks as if it is going to be good Last week they had a team pursuit race at the track and the Tacoma team placed third, very good for their first team race. In just seven events so far, Happy has two seconds and two thirds, Gary has one first, one second and three thirds.

Steve Miller is off to the Junior World Championship training camp. Steve had enough placing points in Junior Olympic Development that he was picked to go. Now his work is cut out for him. Only four Juniors will be selected from the training camp to represent the U.S. at the Junior World Championships.

THE HIGHLINE BICYCLE CLUB PRESENTS;
GREEN RIVER GORGE CENTURY

WHEN: Sunday, July 9, 1978, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

REGISTRATION: At Cumberland, near Enumclaw (turn left in Enumclaw at the Pickle
Factory onto Crystal North. Crystal North runs into 284th S.E.,
then turn onto Veazie/Cumberland Raod and follow signs to Cum-
berland).

ENTRY FEE: $3.00 for ages 16 and above. $2.50 for ages 15 and under. A 50¢

discount will be given to entries postmarked on or before June 30th. A custom
patch designed for this ride will be awarded to all finishing riders. Patches
will be mailed within 6 to 8 weeks.

THE COURSE: Flat to moderate. Riders can choose between the double-metric
century, metric century or half-metric century. The course will be freshly
marked and checked. The ride will be scenic, providing beautiful views of
Mt. Rainier, beautiful scenery and will wind through the Green River Gorge.
