Puget Sound Bicycle Week begins May 13th. We have several rides planned that week to encourage everyone to get out on the road. Let's make Tacoma take notice of the bicycling community! And you can clear out your garage by bringing all your spare bike stuff to the swap meet at the Weldons'.s.I know Frank has a few extra saddles that his tandem stoker couldn't live with.

Bicycle Week will be launched on Wednesday, May 9th with a meeting of bicyclists and the Puget Sound Council of Governments Transportation Committee. It's at 7:30 PM in the City Council chambers, 11th floor, Seattle Municipal Bldg, 3rd and James. The purpose of the meeting is to make county officials (ineluding Pierce Co.) aware of bicycling activities and needs in Puget Sound. Try to attend - there will be a speaker from the Tacoma Wheelmen on the agenda. Call me for more information, at 531-3790.

SUS ae DAFFODIL CENTURY RELIVED

"Don't schedule the ride for tne opening day of fishing season. You'll be swamped wita two million half-crazed and drunken slobs just aching to run down as many cyclists as possible." This, as well as numerous remarks about how we were sure to rm out of patches unless we ordered at least a thousand, was typical of the dozens of bits of "helpful" advice that people were so eager to give me in the months and weeks preceding the fourth amual running (er, bicycling) of the Daffodil Century. ~

But don't get the wrong idea. The help I received was invaluable and vital to the success of the ride. Bob Branson's carefully kept notes ani helpful advice made the organization and execution of the century much easier than I had ever hoped. Frank's undyins support and willingness to help out with anything that needed to be done reduced the work that I had to do considerably. Sue Fowler's beautiful patch lit up weary faces and received compliments throughout the day. Special thanks go to everybody who came out on the day of the ride to man checkpoints, do registrations, and make sure that everything went smoothly. The ride was successful because of you, and your efficient and courteous help was appreciated by everybody who rode the century.

Lastly, I'd like to congratulate and thank everybody who rode the course.
The 339 registered riders were the ones who made the Daffodil Century successful
for the fourth straight year.

It couldn't have been better! -About 350 bikies from all over the state
for our DAFFODIL CENTURY, soaking up the rays and taking in all of the beautiful
scenery. Yep, all the riders are out of hibernation now, and we greeted old
friends and renewed acquaintances.

Several tandems tackled the hills, including the Stevensons' triplet with baby Laura in tow in a trailer that Bill made. Ray Street, Jr. must have been riding with his guardian angel, as he was rear-ended by a van coming down Cemetery Hill and came out unscathed. The TWC racer who was walking very slowly was Mike Pederson, the only rider to circle the course three times! And the Jack Williams Finders Keepers Award goes to Virginia Stratton, who found a pair of stereo speakers on the course ... 5 miles apartl

A celcbration of the day followed as we compared suntans over pizza and suds. Bell helmets off to Carol Rushton for a superb job of organizing the Daffodil!

FOR THE THUNDERTHIGHS: The Mt. Baker Bicycle Club is putting on a toughie
on Sunday, May 6th. The climb starts at 7 AM at Bellingham City Hall, 210 Lottie St,
and goes to the Mt. Baker ski resort and back. The round trip is 115 miles.

STP UPDATE: On our last tandem ride to Winlock, Frank and I tried out a proposed section of tho Seattle-to-Portland ride. It leaves Centralia, parallels the freeway, entirely by-passes Chehalis, and has a gentler climb to Napavine. This will probably become part of the route,

nev Bicycle Action Chairman. The guest
speaker, Josh Lehman, will share his experiences
in some of his travels around the world,
