; On Saturday, eight of us ‘rode one to Penrose. It was a prignd sunny aay abn all the guys rode without shirts. We rode on peninsula backroads, where some walked and all

sweated up those nice, winding, invigorating hills. We got to Penrose between 5 and 6

and set up camp. While Larry lectured us on natural foods, he continued to eye my» _ preservative-filled brownies. Finally he asked for, and ate the brownies ... umn,

not bad! The rest of us went to the beach and Alan and Karen swam in the bay. ° “sBut

_ when she returned, Karen found that the women had» checked out the showers and there was --no hot water. Carol set. up her tent right next to Ken's and he asked "Hey, Carol, » do you snore?" ' Ken still says that she snores [editor' s note: Carol does-not! /.

I sure don't know, or maybé it was those beers and the late. hour. of 1AM that I inally : crept into my sleeping ‘bag and conked out. Carol, Ken, & I tried to take pictures on : the B setting in the dark night with only one candle lit. Carol was in top. form* on this © trip. Her jokes were so funny ... we were all laughing so hard we weré crying.

We got up at 8 AM on Sunday. It was another beautiful sunny day. Karen tends to

. After lunch,~- ‘Larry! s head rolled around and settled on his chest. Phyllis snapped a quick |. - shot of him. I also got my picture snapped as I pooped out on my arm rest. To top off the beautiful, fun weekend, we raced down the highway and stopped at my pool. Larry bought ‘us. chocolate and root beer ice cream for dinner, We sat and sunned all the rest ‘of the afternoon. I showed them my slides and they figured out some of my trick shots --now I'll never be the "wonder of the world" photographer! Oh, well ...

I'm sitting here in a very soft chair, reflecting on last weekend's Seattle-to-
Portland ride. Everyone felt it was a success, with every indication that it will be
a real annual classic. Approximately 85 tourists and 25 time-trialists braved the
driving rain §& headwinds that didn't give us a break until we hit Longview. In spite
of the weather, some hypothermia § inevitable flat tires, all of the Tacoma Wheelmen
who started the ride finished, all enjoying the payoff on all of the miles ridden this
spring in preparation. The most determined riders were Randy Davis § two of his
friends who started the ride Saturday night in Tacoma after work, arriving in Portland
Sunday morning while we were eating breakfast. The racers appreciated the encouragement
§& refreshments offered by Bruce § Lynn Rushton, who monitored two of the checkpoints.
The best time turned in by a Tacoma racer was 12 4 hrs. by Mark Overfield.

What I am most pleased about is that it was a truly fun ride. The only exception was the 50 miles of headwinds, §& being cold § wet between Spanaway § Centralia. But after lunch we seemed to keep getting stronger. Frank § I did the first hundred miles much faster than we expected, so we didn't feel pressed for time in the afternoon.

Not typical time trialists, we stopped often to eat and even take pictures of the rainbow near Portland. Quite the opposite of what I'd expected, the last 50 to 70 miles were the most fun. We were still holding the pace and getting more enthusiastic the closer we got. Around 7:10 we finally rolled into Portland and later joined the rest of the Tacoma Wheelmen for lots of Italian food § champagne. It was an impressive sight Sunday, when enough bikies to fill three train cars lined up at the station to

come home. Frank § I sat eating giant cinnamon rolls (worth riding 200 miles for!),
and wondering ''Now what?". :

Well, I should be recovered enough to ride the Highline Century this Sunday. — And Haven Lake is this month! -Maybe I'll learn to water-ski this year. Don't forget to get your. reservations in! Virginia has to know how much chicken § beer to buy.

Carol Rushton will ride S-T-P next year on her new Jack Taylor tandem. In the meantime, auditions are being arranged for enthusiastic captains. Another terminal case of tandemitis! At the meeting on July 18, Frank will talk about that very subject.
