BICYCLING WITH LISA oe

This July included some great bike rides, which were made all the more pleasant by the sunny weather. The Tacoma Wheelmen were well represented at the Highline Century, which follows one of the most beautiful routes in the area. It also offered plenty of "must-stop-here" places to just sit and feel mellow, like the Black Diamond — Bakery (we're carbo-loading, right?), the Green River Gorge, and the Green River Tavern. Oh, and then there was the ice crean man we flagged down for Fudge Bombs.

I missed Richard Walter's Anderson Island ride the following weekend because I was recovering from a little confrontation I had with some railroad tracks when I went riding between baseball games. My : coach wishes I would stay off the bike until tournaments are over... Hey, Dan and Vera, I think I need a refresher course in safety!

Yesterday was the Haven Lake Party. The ride over from Gig Harbor was beautiful and everyone was pleased with the new road surfaces and wider shoulders. Ruth found coffee in Gorst, where a lot of the bikies downed a second breakfast to get them up that long hill. Virginia greeted us all with donuts and cold drinks at the lake. The cloud cover soon parted and Jack was the first to jump in the water. Carol and I were content to bask in the sun for awhile) until Bob Dahlke and Dave Harper decided it was time for us to get wet. Frank dragged the water skiers around the lake, and some other guys took — turns capsizing the sailboat. Haven Lake is always like a reunion; the Currys and Bransons were there, and Harvey got Crazy Carl off of his motorcycle that day. The afternoon passed all too quickly. Thank you, Eldon and Virginia!

I'm looking forward to watching my first bike race at Marymoor on August 18.
That's the day the Tacoma Wheelmen host the track races. If you've never realized
what an exciting spectator sport bike racing can be, then come on up and we'll find
out what it's all about.

I'll be taking more orders for club jerseys. They're red and gold, a _ light-weight wool/poly blend, and are $15.50. A steal.

The heads-up action starts at 1 PM with all the
local heavies and some Canadian and Oregon racers.
The U.S. Nationals will be over on August 11th,
and hopefully several new champions will have
returned to race, providing even more colorful
action.
