Let's make better use of the newsletter as a means of communica- ve tion between members. Officers have used it effectively but there has not be@én as much use of the newsletter for member to member communica- tion as there could be. For instance, if you want to get a few people together for a long hard ride or a camp-out or for brunch, put it in the newsletter. The real purpose of our club is to get bicyclists to- gether to ride bicycles. The easiest way to find people who like to ride the same way you do is to describe the type of ride you like to do in the newsletter, set a time and place and see who shows up. Af- ter all, as much as we all enjoy our club rides, the rides that are the most fun are the ones where four or five people who ride about the same

speed get together and do something special.

First things first, congratulations to the racers doing so well
at the training races. We have first year racers winning races or
places and juniors that are placing in the-seniors’ races. Our pros
are winning and placing. We even had a-ftat tire. Congratulations
to Steve, Gary, Mark H., Phil, Tim, Mick, Mike, Angela, Melody, and to
all. :

for team photo. Pictures will be taken by Visual Imagery of Tacoma.
Meet at Point Defiance Park Entrance ‘with your uniform.

For anyone who can't make it to the Richland race on Saturday,
April 19, there will be a 10 mile time trial held on the North Levee
Road. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Puyallup end of the road.. The time trial
will be held instead of the Point Defiance training ride. Also, the
time trial is open to all. .

Riding tip: When crossing railroad tracks or large bumps, firmly grip the handlebars, elbows well-flexed, the rider's weight concentrated on the pedals and have the pedal arms parallel to the ground. ]

down on you from behind? And.

when he finally gets to where
you are (usually in about 5.6
scuunds) he either a) runs you
off the road, b) throws an emp-
ty Coore at you. c) yells his

opinions on baicyciists as he
roars by (too bad you can’t un-
derstand a word he says), or
da) stops and "politely" asks
you to “move your butt.off the
road." It's times like these
that you stop and ask yourself
“Why can’t it be different?"
Well, it was the other way
around many years ago. Bicyc-
les, not cars, ruled the roads
of Tacoma at the turn of the
century, and although: the bi-
cycle is now thought of as a
relatively simple and unobtru-
sive piece of machinery, its
first appearances in Tacoma in
the late 1880's and early
1890's caused quite a stir a-
mong the citizens of the City
of Destiny. Pedestrians, un-
accustomed to the high speeds
of the newly popular veloei-
pedes, were frequently bowled
over by riders answering the
challenge of Tacoma's steep
hills. As the number of bi-

syeles in opergtion increased,
nowever, bicycle roads were
constructed and the bicycle be-
came a way of life for Taco-

mans, much in tne same way ag
automobiles now are.

In the coming months, a space th the newsletter will be devoted to the history of bi- cycling in Tacoma. The way in which the bicycle dominated our city at the turn of the century is surprising, and I hope that reading about it will thrill you as much as it has me.

THE. FIFTH ANNUAL DAFFOFIL CENTURY

WHEN: Sunday April 27, 1980; 7AM to 7 PM

REGISTRATION: At the City Park in Orting, Wash. on HWY 162; 40 miles south of Seattle, 9 miles south of Puyallup and 22 miles southeast of Tacoma.

ENTRY FEE: $3.50 for ages 16 and above. $3.00 for ages 15 and under. A 50¢ discount will be given to entries postmarked on or before April 15th. A custom patch designed for this ride this year is awarded to all finishing riders.

FOOD: Entry fee does not include food but there are restaurants, grocery stores and taverns throughout the area expecting you.

BREAKDOWNS: Sagwagons and mechanic's services will be available for emergencies only. Regular prices for parts, labor free.

THE COURSE: Is generally level with a few gently rolling hills the last 20 miles. Riders can again choose between 20, 50 and 100 mile rides.

SUGGESTIONS: Please use the back of your application to tell us how we can make the ride better and more enjoyable for all concerned.
