TACOMA WHEELMEN'S CLUB
South Tacoma Way Tacoma. WA.
Several of vou new members will be neede* as officers and chairmen of
special events during the coming year.
With elections in December it may see~ premature to ask for people to think about recruiting club officers but rost of next year's leeders will heave to come fror members who have joined this vear, and there simply won't be time tr search out people to administer the club.
Historically most of our officers have core from people who have been club merbers for two or three years, but we inadvertantly rate it very dif- ficult to join the club for the last couple of years and consecuently s1- most all of the members have been members more than five years ond have already served as officers or have been members for less than one year,
Most of the present officers heve been officers for severol years and went a rest. Further, a membe~ with very little bicycling experience fre- cuently makes a better officer than someone who has forgotter the thines thev wanted to know as beeinners. One thing to remember is that a1! clubd prozrems need to be tailored around the needs of bicvelists who have beer members less than three vears. After two or three yeors 9 merher will have developed their own set of friends end svecialized interests end cetting information from periodicals rather then other club members. So 911 of you new members who have anv skills that can be vsed to help run the clud rext vear clease core forth and let us know whst vou can do

Haven Lake ride, July 27, 1980. This started as one of tnose beautiful
mornings, warm with the sun shining, when you really enjoy bicycle riding. I
was a little lare getting away from home and didn't leave Olympic Village with
the group. ,
While crossing the Narrows Bridge, always an exciting exverience in ite self, I c>me upon Nancy Clemens repairing a flat tire. She just finished up as I got off my bike. These are the kind of fiats I like to come upon. She repaired it herself, and a good job too. Capable girl, Nancy. Handy to have
around.
Shortly after passing Olym>ic Village, I started to overtake some of the slower riders and ended up riding the whole way witth Ruth Weldon. Ruth rides just about my sveed and is always a pleasure ro ride with. She also likes to stop for coffee. We stopped at Gorst. You could tell the place by all the
bicycles in front.
On leaving Gorst, we travelled to Belfsir, past Belfair State Park, and up the long hill to the lake without incident.
At the lake we were met by Virginia Stratton"s brother and his wife,. Paul and Shirley Southwell, who had coffeee, pop, doughnuts and cantaloupe slices for the hungry riders to munch on.
Everybody was doing something, water skiing,. swimming, boating, canoeing, and just plain loafing around. As usual, Virginia had a wonderful dinner laid out in serve yourself style. There was fried chicken, macaroni salad along with potato, beans, hot dogs, potato chips, jello salad, pickles--I could go on and on. This was about the best spread ever. Everyone vorged themselves on- all the goodies. We ever had watermelon slices later onl
After dinner, I went back in swimming for a bit. The water was ouite warr, in spite of our lack of warm weather this summer. Later I rowed Brends Branson, a delightful girl of twelve, around the lake. This is almost a tra- dition that has been zoing on for about six years. Thanks, Brenda.
I think there were about fifty or sixty people there. Everyone had a great time. This was the seventh year for this gathering an” was one of those deys -you hoped would never end. The one who did all the planning, tha gather- ing together of the food and drinks, all the worry and-work and all the clean- ing up was that jewel of a lady Virginia. We all love Virginia. Whst else can be said? Thanks. Thanks Virginia from the very bottom of our hearts.
