FROM THE PRESIDENT eae
Most of you have heard of Jack's accident and a lot of people have
stopped by or called to offer their best wishes. Jack has asked us to ap-
point a new touring captain and Jim Heaton has consented to finish out
Jack's term. We will miss the unique style and flair Jack brought to the
se ghee captain's job and hope he will be able to ride with us again soon
and often. :
Jim will be giving the club and touring schedule a fresh perspective
and enthusiasm that is sorely needed..
Jim is setting a good example of a relatively new member tackling a
difficult key job. We need a few more people who are interested in acting
as officers and key committee members.
If you are interested in helping improve bicycling in Tacoma, come to the next few officers meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month. Call Frank Weldon for the meeting place.
Let's all go to Mount Vernon.. It's the best ride of the year. Call
Frank for car pooling.
The Mount Vernon Century is the most interesting bicycling event of the year. Between 500 and 600 of your fellow bicyclists converge on Mount. Vernon for a real happening. Some of us will bicycle up from Tacoma. There is camping at the fairgrounds and socializing is the order of the day. Everybody has a good time, whether it's Kirk and Ripple attempting to break four hours or the people struggling to do their first 100 mile ride in 12 hours. The person setting a new course record and the people barely able to make the course in 12 hours are each making an importent contribution to bicycling. And most of al], Fred Strong and the Northwest Bicycle Tour- ing Society deserve the heartfelt thanks of e711 Tacoma Wheelmen for produc- ing such an enjoyable event.

All's quiet on the racing scene except for the last few races. But the team is hard at work formulating plans for next year. Which if the plans come true should be our best year ever. But, as we all know, talk 4s cheap. What we need is action; with the racing over it's time to get off the bike and process the paper work. It is very basic: there is no such thing as a free lunch, you will pay for it sooner or later. There will be another racer's meeting, watch for the announcement on the bulletin
board at Singleton's.
Time trials will probably continue through the month of September or
until darkness forces cancellation. In October time trials will shift to
Saturday morning, but they will only be once or twice a month. Watch the
newsletter and bulletin board. After the first of the year, training rides
will begin at the Point, similar to this year.
Process your paper work,
Mark Overfield
Club meetings are held on the third
Wednesday of each month at 7:30 at SPONSORS
