Well, it's the beginning of a new year and time to start
new riding logs and hitting the streets for the first time in
1981. If you haven't ridden your bike yet this year, bundle
up and go out for a short 5-10 mile spin. When you get back,
you'll be refreshed, relaxed and in a good mood to kick back
and read the rest of my article.
I would first of all like to thank the general member- ship for electing me president of the club. I'h grateful for your confidence and confident myself that I can fulfill your expectations. JI need your help, though. Don't hesitate to phone me at 537-3888 if you have any suggestions, comments or criticisms of anything related to the club or bicycling in general. ay :
There: are several plans for the new year already in the works, including the traditional Daffodil Century in April and a two day staze race which will also be held sometime this spring. Both of these events need the help and support of the general membership. Please give me a call and I'll tell you how you can assist the various organizers of these programs. It's very important that every member of the TWC
contribute at least a few hours to the club each year, so
make a New Years resolution to help out. Cooperation is
what strong clubs are made of.
Our club has received a lot of new members in the past year and these newcomers comprise the foundatton of our club. Unfortunately many rookies, it seems, are in awe of the ap- pearance and expensive= equipment of some of the veteran rid- ers on the Sunday tours. If you are, don't be.. That freak over there with the $4000 boron-reinforced Klein frame and titanium sunglasses has the same objective you do: he wants to have fun on his bike. Behind all the flashy gear isa nice guy who is more than willing to talk with you about bi- cycling or any other subject you choose. I promise he won't bite off your head or die of convulsions laughing at your bike, which may be worth only a fraction of his. Old or new, fast or slow, weβte really all the same. We just like to ride our bicycles with our friends and have a good time. Isn't that all that counts?
Bruce Rushton
PS: We still need someone to be bicycle action chairman.
Please remember yourNew Years resolution and give me a call.
Thanks.

Racing Report
This marks the first report under new captain Gary Singleton. Gary is taking over as racing captain from Mark Overfield. The team would like to express thanks to Mark for his work as team captain last year.
With the new year it is time to turn our thoughts and endeavors towards the upcoming racing season. New for this year is a complete recatagorization of all riders, both road and track..Basically everyone is being moved down a catagory leaving Tom Broznwski as the only catagory one rider in the state. (According to the USCF "For 1981 to start out as a cat one you must be either on the national team, a state champion or other recognized national rider") This means everyone will have to train extra hard to move up catagories. ie:
Speaking of training the team is participating in Sunday rides or xc
ski trips this winter call 474-6590 during the day Saturdays to find out
details for Sunday's trip.
Big on the agenda for this year is our team race: Tacoma's Daffodil Super Weekend, to be held April 18 & 19. This will be run on a stage race format and several companies have eXspressed interest in helping to sponsor the race. This will give us a big race with a large prize list, and with all team members helping it could well be one of the best races in the DAO eater eaten ce ae tom PM ab Sineietors olen e racing team will be Monday January 19, 7:00

The debate and vote concerning the future of the racing team as a part of the Tacoma Wheelmen's Club took a little more time. The club debated the pro's and cons of an integrated prograh, ie; racing as well as touring club, for over an hour. A vote was then taken and the general membership present unanimousily decided that the racing team should remain a part of the club.. It is up to all of us to make this integrated club concept work.
