CLUB MEETING NEWS

January's meeting was the Annual Award's Banquet and was held at the Country Squire.

The turnout was greater than what was expected-but after moving some more tables in, oe. room was made for all. Two movies were shown, one featuring the National Champion-

ships held in Seattle a few years ago, the other featuring the Tour de France. The

business meeting was short (as is usual for the banquet meeting) and the officers

for the coming new year were introduced.

The climax of the meeting was of course, the awards. The highlight of the awards was an: award presented by Frank Weldon, to the Club Founders. The following people were honored for their work in founding the Tacoma Wheelman's Club: Stuart Curry, Steve Newton, Steve Perrett, Gary Singleton, Eldon Stratton, Virginia Stratton, Frank Weldon, Ruth Weldon and Jack Williams. If anyone was forgotten, I'm sorry - I did it from memory. All in all it was a very nice evening which was enjoyed by all.

BO - 1981 LIFESTYLE FAIR

KNBQ 97 radio has invited the Club to participate in the 1981 Lifestyle Fair to be

held at the Tacoma Mall February 12 through February 16. We will be on stage with

roller races, repair and safety demonstrations. Varios bikes will_aslo be displayed. __ This is a great chance for public exposure. Our participation will be Friday,

February 13 (mo bad luck expected), from 4pm to 5pm and Saturday, February 14 from

lpm to 3pm. We will also be handing out newsletter to people in the mall, If you

are interested in helping out, contact Jim Grimm at 564-0703. Let's show Tacoma

the Tacoma Wheelmen!

RACING WITH GARY

Racing is looking very good for this year. The last few weekends on our training
vides, we have had a very good turnout with 15 to 17 people showing up for the ride,
with many new faces in the crowd. If you are interested in racing or just want to
train with us, give me a call and we'li put your name the "list" so you can start
riding, training and racing with us.

Once again the racing team will be sponsored by Kucharik (which is a bicycle cloth- ing manufacturer in California) owned by John Kucharik and Singleton's Cyclery. We are going to look more professional this year with new team shorts and one piece

track suits. We are also changing the look of our team jersey by adding Tacoma
Wheelman to the back of the jersey.

If anyone has any ideas on how. to help or improve the racing team this year, give
me a call - 474~6590,

Gary

publicity--got an idea? Give Eric a call at 272 3544
(after 7 p.m.) and let's get action.

So many things are already in the works at this time that we feel we could have started years ago. The most pressing issue is the new Hood Canal Bridge. We've sent a letter to Washington State Department of Transportation and made our recommendations known. If

you wish particulars, please call Eric (see number above). Additionally, the legislative
session has started in Olympia and our first bike bill SB 3144(dealing with redefinition
of bicycles, rights of the road, and lane changes) is coming up for hearing on February 4-:
then another bil?--1'1] give you particulars in our next newsletter or sooner--wil! work
towards more shoulders and fog lines! =

Now to plans: for our area. Of course we want a Tacoma/Pierce County Bicycle Coordinator ._ The time is right for thés since we're getting a new county Executive and we can follow the lead of Kitsap and King counties. We'll be forming an information phone chain for ‘responses to upcoming legistation and getting the word out on upcoming events which need more public awareness (Daffodil Century and Bike Week).

Our first meeting was in the TCC library and was attended by Carol Brown, Harvey Lister,
Linda Smith, Frank Weldon, and Margaret and Eric Wuersten. First and final order of
business--we need your help to make a difference for bicycling. So call Eric at 272 3544
after 7 p.m. Next meeting of BAC will be the last Wednesday of the month--February 25--
7 p.m. at TCC Building 22, Room 11. See you there.
