December 19th, 1981 marked the beginning of a new bicycle club in Tacoma.
Called Team Aero, President Garry Singelton hopes to make this group of 20
racers the club to beat in the Northwest racing scene. The Tacoma Wheelman's
Ciub, TWC,-will continue-to- be-primarily a touring club.— See "From Your. BAC
Chairman" in this issue of the NEWSLETTER.

December 14, 1981 marks a special day in Washington State bicycling history.
That day the State Department of Transportation set guidlines for widespread.
use of freeway shoulders by bicyclists. Many of us have used the Dupont I-5
access for our trips to VIP'S on the Nisqually and points south. Now with the
help of the likes of Bob Bergstrom, BAC from Cascade Bicycle Club and Karl
Gorsky from Olympic Bike Club and many others active in bicycle politics, major
stretches of our state's interstate system will be opened to bicyclists. Ina
phone conversation with Department of Transportation Traffic Engineer Bob Truitt,
we learned that February 20th is the date that signs will be posted on freeways.
In our immediate area I-5 will be open from Gravelly Lake south to Martin Way,
and I-512 to the King County line. We still have some discussions in the works
about the SR 16 corridor that will make its way to the Narrows Bridge. More

on that later. Incidentally, Bob Truitt has agreed to come to one of our regular TWC meetings and discuss the DOT policies on limited access roads and the bicycle. Look for that in the March NEWSLETTER.

Club meetings will be announced in future newsletters. If you have suggestions regarding meeting locations and times, please let your officers know.

Why Join The Tacoma Wheelman's Club

What can be gained by paying dues and joining a bicycle club when you can ride anytime, anywhere without any cost? The benefits are many, and the cost to you is small. For just a few dollars a year, you will receive the monthly NEWSLETTER announcing club activities such as weekend rides (led by experienced bicyclists), potluck get togethers, ice cream rides, and news of interest to bicyclists on such subjects as legislative action promoting bicycling. Here are some of the many ways you can benefit through your membership in TWC:

1. You will receive information on TWC club rides.

2. The cumulative experience of the many club "veterans" can provide lots of good advice on bicycles, equipment and maintenance/repair.

3. TWC provides information on bicycle routes and tours in and around Tacoma/
Pierce County and gives you access to supporting organizations for addi-
tional bicycle routes.

4. TWC can introduce you to many people who share your interests in bicycling
through contact on leisurely rides, social get togethers at the end of
rides and at monthly meetings or with newly found training and commuting
partners.

5. TWC can exert its influence on city and county planning decisions regarding traffic and future facilities that can help the bicycling community in Tacoma.

1. The organized group of TWC can wield more pressure for legislative action.

The members of the club are kept informed about bicycle related legislation in their region and in other parts of the nation through TWC's contact with regional and national bicycle action networks.

Membership in the Tacoma Wheelman's Club provides many benefits to its members

and the bicycling community of Tacoma. The club provides service to the community

but depends on your support. Please join your TWC now and help make Tacoma a

better place for all bicyclists.

ABOUT CHILLY HILLY Chilly Hilly is a 100 or 56 km tour sponsored annually by Cascade Bicycle Club on the last Sunday in February. The route is a 32 mile loop through the scenic forests and farmlands of Bainbridge Island. Chilly Hilly is not an endurance contest or arace. It is purely a social and recreational event. It is intended that all participants ride Chilly Hilly safely and lawfully.

SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED!
This year, riders will have a choice of two routes. The regular
route will be the same as always, marked with signs and easy to
follow from the map provided. A new route, The Bainbridge
Island Bicycle Rally, is approximately 40 miles in length and is
not signed or marked. Instead, riders will receive a set of

FROM THE PRESI Fellow racers and cther athletic supporters, now is che time for the annual State of The Club Message. (Hey, if an unemployed actor can do it, so can 1.) Eifective January 1, 1982 USCF Club #516 had its uame changed from Tacowa Wheelman to Team Aero. Our primary objectives are now racing and the promotion of bicycling in the commmity. Team Aero membership dues are ten dollars per year and are payable January 1. Please pay soon, We need your monetary support too.

One of the many things discussed at .ur planning meetings has
been mandatory participation in at least one club event ox
activity as a committee member. This is to spread the pride
and satisfaction of a job well dome to every one in the club
and not just the hard core supporters.

Financial Report

When the club split, the voter response dicated that the
division be 51% of the treasury to racers and 49% to the
touring group. The bad news is 51% of an undetermined amount
that we do not have falls a might short of expectations.

The joint financial committee, Gary Singleton and Frank Weldon will see to the prompt disbursement of the funds.

time ouf to help the sport of bicycle racing. For the last two Weexends we have been sanding the track in Redmond to

of sponsoring is the advertisement, The hest exposure that we can give them is to wear the jerseys and shorts whenever possible. That means on Craining rides, races and even commuting, if that applies tc you, jerseys could be worn. Last year there were a few Ceam wmewbers that dia not wear their jerseys very much, sometimes not even to races. This year every team member wili weer his;her team jersey and Shorts at races. The Club almost lost one of its Sponsors due to lack of participation ot the wearing of the jerseys, and it has also made it harder for us to get other sponsors. Let's show some pride for the club and fer our Sponsors, ~ weer the jerseys and we will all be the better for it

SUNDAY RIDES

The turnout so far on the first few rides has been very encouraging with 10 to 20 riders showing up. Rides have been in the 25 to 50 mile range with the emphasis on staying together as much as possible, The purpose of the Sunday tides is to get the team together for a rolling critique

of what some of us are doing right and to take as many

miles as possible to get tired. Lord willing and the
