This year promises to be an exciting one for the Tacoma Wheelmans Club. Our reorganized
club has good response to our Sunday rides and program activities. The turnout for the
March general meeting was excellant and many valuable ideas were contributed. We have
a solid board which has committed itself to making our club work, serving the needs of
the membership.
We are currently in a membership drive, hoping to attract as many active participants as possible. To date we have approximately forty members and hope that by the time the Daffodil Century comes we will have added additional members to our roster. Again,
if you have not already done so, please, today, complete your membership application
and foward that application along with your dues to our club treasurer.
We are in need of some ideas for bicycle week coming up in May. Bicycle safety was
suggested as a good program to consider, especially for the younger riders of our
community. If you have suggestions, or would like to help in some formal activities,
please let us know.
Additional suggestions we are currently looking into include a published membership
roster and recognition of new members to our club in the monthly newsletter. Also,
ideas on how to attract that segment of the bicycle community which commutes on a
bicycle to and from work who have not joined the Tacoma Wheelmans Club. It has been
suggested that these members would be a valuable addition to our club and would adda
new, necessary dimension.
Please note our meeting schedule for the next three months.
See you at the Daffodil.

Time Trials will be held this year on a new course. They are held each Tuesday night
May through September begining at 6:30. The course is 10 miles long.
They start in Sumner, where Highway 167 crosses West Valley Highway. The course goes
north toward Auburn on West Valley. This highway has good pavement, light traffic and
is protected from winds.
The course was moved from River Road due to deteriorating pavement and severe winds. The new course is only 13 miles from Tacoma, an additional 3 miles from the old one.
Many tourists wonder what training value a Time Trial holds for them. The purpose is not the competition, but a measurement of ones own personal development -- a weekly or monthly measurement of the improvement of your average speed.
Time Trialing is a social event too. If nothing else, plan your Tuesday evening ride
to stop by and meet cyclists from Auburn area and enjoy a ride back to Tacoma with
some other tired cyclists. au,
Kirk Kirkland
