WINTER RIDING
by Terry King
Cycling can be enjoyed throughout the winter if you are properly dressed for cold weather. When preparing for cold-weather riding, a little research into what winter sports such as cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and climbing use for garments will give you a vasis for making clothing decisions,
The turtlenecks that skiers use help trap body heat. They also wear
long underwear made of polypropylene, wool, wool biends, or other
types of thermal material. The underwear helps keep you warm without
bulk and with unrestricted movement.
Depending on the outside temperature, it can be a good idea to wear several layers of clothing. This is not only more comfortable than wearing bulky clothing but also more warmth is trapped between the
layers. Too, you have the option of removing layers if you should
become too warm.
The outside garment on the torso should be a wind-resistant jacket.
it. provides the important function of lowering the wind-chill
factor and helping to retain body heat.
The lower portion of the body can be covered with many different types of warm clothing. A good pair of cycling tights and long underwear will usually keep you warm enough. Some other combinations which might be used are nylon tights, leg warmers, sock tights, warm-up pants, or knickers and knicker socks.
Always wear a covering on your head when it is cold outside. Your
helmet alone will not work. Your heads acts as a chimney and
uncovered will allow for severe heat loss. Thin wool hats, cycling
caps, balaclavas, or skullcaps worn under the helmet will provide
sufficient protection for the head.
The cyclists feet and hands are the most vulnerable in cold weather. Cross-country ski gloves work well for the very cold days, while wool liners under your cycling gloves work good on a warmer winter day.
I have found that a mitten shell over a glove liner is a great
method as the shell can be removed in case of a warming trend later
in the day.
The cyclist's feet are the most difficult to keep warm (probably because they are the extremity farthest from the heart). Light hiking boots, cross-country ski boots, or wool-lined cycling shoes are alternatives, although a proper choice of socks can solve most cold feet problems. Multi-layers of silk, olefin, wool, or polypropylene work well. If those cold feet persist, try a wool sock over the shoe, cycle shoe covers, rain gaiters, shoe galoshes, or toeclip covers.
As it is difficult to predict what will be the most comfortable for all riders, common-sense must be used. But remember—always layer because you'll always be coldest at the beginning of the ride and
after a food break. Happy winter cycling and hope to see you warm
and toasty.
