BICYCLING AND ROAD TAXES |
Has anybody ever accused you as a bicyclist of
not paying your share of road taxes because you don't have to buy gasoline? They are wrong. Let me give

funds. Surely this more than compensates for the
amount of bicycling on these roads. .
Bicycles take up little road space and cause vit-
_ tually no wear to the road surface. Many expensive toad projects are needed to accomadate an increase in automobile traffic during the rush hour. If some of those commuters could be convinced to bicycle rather than drive the need for these very expensive Toad expansion programs would be eliminated, Bicycle use has the potential of reducing road costs.
So the truth is that all road Users are subsidized by property and other general taxes. Whether you © drive a truck, bus, car, horse, bicycle walk or never . travel at all, you are paying for the road system. And because bicycles use the road system much more efficiently than larger, heavier vehicles by not causing as much road wear, traffic conjestion or parking problems (not to mention reducing air pol- lution and improving health through exercise) it eee automobiles that are not paying their fair. share. :
So now you know what to tell those fat, lazy slobs who accuse you of getting a free ride as you pedal
