CLUB HOUSE

MINUTES
MEETING: NOVEMBER 13, 1984

Those present: Greg Grenier, Diane Larrabee, John Joyce, John Space,
Scott Pierson. :

Purpose of the meeting: To discuss strategy for the formation of an offi-
cial Bicycle Advisory Committee.

At present the Wheelmen do little to affect County and City policy to- wards bicycles. Many projects such as SR-16 and I-705 (Tacoma Spur) are planned and built without input from anyone interested in bicycling. Fund- ing levels for improvement for bicycles is low in comparison to funding levels in other cities. Little education is available for young people who must learn all there is on their own. Maps are uncoordinated and inad- equate. Roads are modified through striping changes or are not maintained without thought of the bicyclist. :

The goal of creating an official citizen's committee responsible to the
mayor and City Council and the city and another committee for the County
would give individuals involved in bicycling a voice in current projects
as well as those other aspects of bicycling.

The existing Citizen's Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC) meeting
monthly could address some bicycling issues but traditionally has placed
a low priority on bicycling issues. The Wheelmen have had negligible
contact with this committee.

Is there enough interest within the bicycling community to support a bi- cycle advisory commmttee? The Wheelmen can inform members about issues affecting them through the Newsletter and at monthly meetings using invit- ed speakers. This committee will meet monthly on the second Monday; min- utes will be distributed, and committee news will be published in the News- letter. MTWTC will function as an ‘ad hoc' advisory committee to develop expertise and contacts in the community and to increase public awareness of the issues.

Various proj cts were discussed. These were grouped into five areas and a committee member ‘assigned' to each. Those responsible will develop a written program of goals and how to achieve those goals for the next meet- ing. An attempt should be made to get help from Wheelmen members.

At a meeting last spring, Seattle people Angel Rodriguez and Carla Black advised not to dwell on minor road imrovements and to also look at larger issues. Seattle now has a specific program just to deal with minor road

improvements.

The next meeting will be held at 7:30 on January 7. Call Greg, 752-4348

I have been well known for miscelleneous trundlings associated with
my rides over the last year. But for those of you who missed the ULTI-
MATE TRUNDLE on Sunday, November 4, 1984, I thought this reporter would
share a few quotes made along the wey.

BICYCLING THE BaCKROnDS OF PUGET SOUND by Erin and Bill Woods "During late summer, the water will be low and bicycles can be push- ed across safely, but in other seasons the rider may have to carry. After heavy rainstorms or during Spring runoff, the erossing may be RISKY, so schedule this ride carefully..."

STEVE (Tour Leader): "I've always wanted to take this trip. Wading South Prarie Creek sounds like such fun." SUE: "I've never been on a ride like this in the 34 years of riding

with the Wheelmen."

DIANNE: "These kind of rides really build ‘intimacy’ and ‘comradery'".

GREG: "Boy, my feet are cold! I can't feel my toes!"

JOHN: "The last time I forded a river was in Korea in 1952...and I did
not plan to ever do it again.”

JIM: “I thought I was good at 'The Trundle’, but Steve is the title
winner. If I try to outdo Steve now, I might hurt somebody in the
process. Steve....you win."

PHYLLIS: "I"ve always liked this area......in the summertime. We
ought to try it then."

Hi,

Guess this will be my last column. My friend. TNE and T have had a great time riding with and reporting on the events of the Wheelmen. We've met some very nice people and been on some not-soon-to-be-forgot- ten rides in the past year. How about that rain-ride on Vashon Island about this time last year? Or the train ride back from Centralia on an Amtrak that was already overcrowded? I don't think I'd ever want to take those long hills (we rode the course backwards) on the Peninsula Metric again without the assist of a tow truck! The new Daffodil loop was fun and had the best cookies at the rest stop.(Best because we got the last ones!) After losing half of my group in the dark, I've learn- ed my lesson as a Ride Leader--Quit while you're ahead. It has been fun, but it's time for my friend TNE and I to move on to other rides in other places.
