Our little brother event to the Daffodil Classic has grown up. We are proud of the fact that 413 riders enjoyed our Kitsap metric. While keeping fees down ($3 pre-registered, $5 event day), we made $770 net this year. The 1986 Peninsula Metric is now one of the biggest sanctioned rides in western Wash

is fun to meet and talk to new friends

Many thanks to all the terrific STP
volunteers who ran the Spanaway check-
point. Have you ever seen so many color-
fully dressed people eat so much food?
(SIX truckloads!)

The STP grapevine reports that the Spanaway checkpoint was great, with the best food and wonderful people. All the riders appreciated the extra words of encouragement from the TWC volunteers (I wish you folks had been in Longview, too!).

A few volunteers are still needed to help the triathletes that will compete in the exciting Crystal Mountain Triathlon which will take place on July 27,1986. This demanding event begins with a 1 mile swim, followed by a 45 mile uphill bike ride, and culminates with a 6.2 mile run to the summit of Crystal Mountain. Total elevation gain is over 6,200 feet!

If you can help out, please contact

T-shirts. Hopefully dinner will also be

Our 1986 Summer Picnic will be held at American Lake North County Park from 10:00 a.m. until we run out of food (or poop out). A family bike ride of 10 - 15 miles will begin at 10:00 from the park. Riders of all ages and riding styles are welcome on this easy tour of Lakewood.

Eating will begin about noon, with
the Club providing hotdogs, beans, pop,
etc. You are invited to bring your
favorite after-lunch treat to our Potluck
Dessert Table.

There will be more fun and games after
lunch, with many prizes for people who can
do the silliest things best. How many
people do you think will fit inside an
inner tube? Waterskiing is also on our
agenda.

We need a few volunteers to help with
the set-up, cooking, and clean-up. Can
you lend a hand? If so call Sue Given
(565-0535) or Laurie Wohlhueter (1-878-

North County Park, Sunday, July 20, 10 a.m.

On a fairly recent ride Lisa led to Bremerton and home from Seattle, we ran into a rather unique problem---one which I feel needs addressing. I realize that it was a Class 3 ride; but really, when everyone runs off and leaves the leaders, I do think that's carrying things a bit too far. As I understand it, "Class 3" means that the leaders don't have to wait for anyone else, not the other way around!

I said,"We must hurry, for there they
go, and we are the ride Jeaders." But
alas it did no good. Not only did they
ride off and leave us in the dust, they
even boarded the ferry without even
knowing where the hell we were!"

Fortunately the water depth was very
low, and with Lisa's incredible tandem-
handling capabilities and our new-founded
Evel Knievel skills, we just made it.

(We are both honor graduates from the
Frank Weldon School of Tandem Riding.)

However, on the way home, the worm turned (so to speak). Noone chose to follow the leaders anymore. We went down the West Valley Highway and everyone else chose the Interurban Trail. We also took a nifty little shortcut called Jovita Boulevard, and arrived back at the parking 1% hours before Baja John, the next to arrive.

The rest may still be out there some- where (who knows?). I did hear rumors of flat tires, but it sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me. Part of the problem of route differential may be due to the fact that there was a lack of maps and cue sheets. As Lisa said,"You can't get lost!" (As I remember on the same ride last year, Ric ended up in Winslow instead of Bremerton.) "Go to Gorst and turn right." Maybe she didn't say that last year.

Anyway a good time was had by all,
and I assume that everyone arrived home
sooner or later.
