Despite the adverse weather conditions, the riders still came out. This was by far the most successful Daffodil Classic to date, but we still did not meet our goal of 1,000 riders. However, we did have 900 registered and 761 brave souls that actually rode the course!

Once again the Orting Co-op Nursery School put on a great breakfast and the Orting Lions Club made their delicious BBQ hamburgers. Our thanks to them for their participation and for helping our event to be even better. Our thanks also to Gregg's Greenlake Cyclery in Seattle for volunteering to sag the course.

THANKS AGAIN - I want to thank Wayne Wakefield, Diane Lister, And Scott Sears for organizing the Pierce County Parks and Recreation activities in May. Although we could have had better attend- ance, the Effective Cycling class and Bicycle Rodeo were very well done. An excellent first effort!

GOOD PRESS - The Tacoma News Tribune should be complimented for their positive support of bicycling. As you know, we have had three feature articles published this Spring: riding with children (featuring the King's), all-terrain bicycling (featuring John Kelley), and finally the full color article on where to ride (featuring the Lay's and Davis').

It is important to all of us that the
Tacoma Wheelmen's Club be seen as the
major force for eyehing in Tacoma and
Pieree-county.— —

ES BEGINNING TO PAY OFF - I think
back to some initial contacts in early
January with both the city and county.
Along with Sue Given and Scott Pierson,

I attended meetings to discuss bicycle
planning. The initial contacts were
very bureaucratic --- "not much support.'
So we all decided to take the "start
small" approach.

Wayne Wakefield and I agreed to work with Pierce County Parks to plan a series of bike routes. Sue Given agreed. to work with the Puyallup River planning commission. Diane Lister attended a bicycle safety seminar with Tacoma's ~~ "Officer Friendly's team.

Well, we're beginning to see the results of our efforts. Tacoma police are referring people to TWC for bicycle safety sessions. Pierce County Parks wants us to lead a series of 4 bicycle vides this summer. I just received a call from the Pierce County 6-year planning consultants ‘to discuss bike paths.

POLITICAL ACTION - We're on our way.

The Crystal Mountain Triathlon needs volunteers to aid the triathletes that will compete on July 27, 1986. This is a "Tri" that should not be taken lightly. With a 1 mile swim, 45 mile bike ride, and a 6.2 mile run AND a total elevation gain of over 6,200. feet, you can see how demanding it will be!

There are needs for people at the
following stations:

1. Marking bodies for the swim event.

. Swim-to-bike transition area.

. Bike-to-run transition area.

. Finish and placement board.

. Bicycle security, at the start and
finish of the bicycle leg.

. Event timing. ;

. Registration packet delivery on day
of the race.

. Road safety - we need 4 to 6 vehi-
cles to place mobile radio units.
These will be in addition to the
Fire Dept. vehicles. Would like
knowledgeable First Aid people here,

9. Parking at beginning of the event.
10.Aid station on bike course.
11.Bike rack set-up and take-down.

This "Tri" starts at Nolte State
Park at 8:00,Sunday morning, July 27th.
Volunteers will receive Crystal Mountain
- Tri T-shirts. Hopefully dinner will als.

Gorski, Nelson Vails, Steve Hegg, and
Seattle's own Rebecca Twigg, plus the rest
of America's elite cyclists in 5 days of
edge-of-your-seat racing excitement. The
National Track Cycling Championships are
coming to the Marymoor Velodrome in Red-
mond, Aug. 5-9.

Two racing sessions will be held each day, with the morning preliminary heats at 10 am and the evening finals at 7 pm. Tickets are priced as follows: weekday mornings: $2; weekday evenings: $3; Satur- day morning: $3; Sat. evening: $5; full- week pass: $15.

Ticket-order forms can be obtained b sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Washington State Bicycling Association, 6714 - 128th Ave. N.E., Kirkland, Wa.98033. Retail individual session tickets will go on sale at the Seattle and Bellevue REI stores starting June 23.

Helmet Booklet

e “In any (cycling) accident,
even a minor one, you have a
50-50 chance of hitting your
head. If it is unprotected and
moving at 20 mph when it hits
something solid, you are dead
... period.” ;

So says the United States
Cycling Federation (USCF) in a
new booklet titled, ‘‘Get A
Head Start: Head Injury,
Helmets And The Cyclist.” The
16-page booklet explains how

e brain can be injured in a

_cling accident, what should
be done for the injured cyclist
and how helmets are de-
signed and tested.

The booklet then lists 11
helmets that currently meet
either ANSI or Snell standards.

They are: Bailen, Bell Biker, Bell Mark |, Bell Tourlite, Bell- V-1 Pro, Fury, Hanna Pro (new model), Kiwi, MSR, OGK and Supergo. (This year, all riders entering a USCF race will be required to use an ANSI- or Snell-approved helmet. Leather ‘‘hair nets’’ are not acceptable.)
