Come and try to figure out who everyone is---it's almost as fun as trying to figure out who's who at the annual club banquet when people get out of their usual cycling attire and into "normal"

funds in August.

Tt occurred to me that it's been awhile since we've touched on any basic bicycle repairs such as fixing a flat tire on the road. A few of us had a refresher course on this very topic on the River Ride in late August. Now follow these simple step-by-step directions carefully and I guarantee you success. (Anyone can do it.) First there's the tell-tale feeling from your rear wheel that signals the flat tire.

STE P #1 - Remembering you don't have a spare tube, you must be sure everyone knows you
have the flat. Be sure to holler loud enough to accomplish this. Then with a few choice
words, you dismount your chrome-plated Paramount and throw it to the ground, being sure all
derailleurs are facing down. ;

STEP #2 - Remove rear wheel; find where you think the hole is; pull off a short section of tire; pull out some tube; and pas it. Then have Steve pump it up with your Silca pump. He won't be able to figure out which side of the pump head to use and in utter disgust, will throw it to the ground (head side down), get his Zefal, and pump the tire up.

STEP #3 - Find a stoker who is used to holding tandems upright and will stand for six
hours helding up ‘a bike without complaint. Bring bicycle upright, position stoker, and you
have a roadside bike stand!

STEP #4 - Now try to replace the wheel in the drop-outs. It will take at least three PeOrrS , Hot counting the bike stand (anyone else who is handy can laugh). Finally you will

igure out the drop-outs are bent ( see Step #1 ).

STEP #5 - Have Tony remove the wheel and tangle the rear derailleur in the spokes. Not everyone can do this, so better have Tony take care of this | lure.

‘STEP #6 - Find an extra long screwdriver to remove the adjustment screws from the drop- outs. This can be sort of tricky. For example, mine are broken off flush with the drop- outs; so to cover all contingencies, better carry a drill! .

STEP #7 - Replace wheel on bike. It may take some springing of the rear triangle, but not to worry --- it probably won't permanently damage the frame. — .

STEP #8 - Discover tire is flat AGAIN! Repeat Step #2 with these exceptions: take tire completely off the rim, pull tube completely out, borrow new tube from Steve, and reassemble as before. Meanwhile, Steve (being the useful person that he is) will attempt to find the hole in the old tube and pull the valve stem out. Trash that tube!

STEP #9 - Take the bike away from the stoker, get on that sucker, and finish the ride.

Now with simple instructions like these, how could you possibly go wrong? No one should
ever fear having a flat on the road again. It does take at least six people to carry out
these repairs though. Any extras can take pictures, offer helpful advice, and snicker.
