DIFFERENT STYLES OF BIKE TRIP PREPARATION

Everyone seems to have a different method for getting ready to go on a bike trip. Take my son Bruce and his friend Matt, for example. Now they should sell tickets! The morning they propose to leave, they start packing and overhauling their bikes. Bruce tends to travel light. Matt needs everything he has at home, including his down bed pillow. That was good for a half- hour of very heated discussion. Then at the very last minute, Matt decided he needed fenders on his bike. The first day, they got as far as Roy.

Now as far as I’m concerned, the worst part of getting ready to go is making the lists. I spend weeks doing this. I usually think of something that will be indispensable when I'm 20 miles from home in the car, on the freeway, in rush hour traffic, with no paper or pencil handy. Now when you get to my age, the old memory system just isn't what it used to be, and by the time I get home, all I can remember is that I'd thought of something vital I must remember to take; but that precise something has somehow slipped my mind.

Then not only is there the list of things to take, there's the list of things that must be done before you leave. The length of one list rivals the length of the other list. Usually I find that most of the things on the "to do list" are things I've been procrastinating about for at least six months anyway, so what's another month or so? That takes care of most of that list.

Now it's down to the real nitty-gritty time - the day (or evening) before departure. I get out the "things to take list" and start piling everything in the middle of the living room floor. This is the point where utter panic sets in. Where are the rack adapters for the Eclipse panniers? The bags are useless without them. Oh good, that was fairly easy. Now let's see, where was the special place I put those funny U-shaped bolts for my front low-riders? All I can remember is that I put them in a real safe place there they wouldn't get lost. Tear the garage up, dump out those four boxes full of useless worn-out freewheels, chains, and other such treasures. Oh yes, there they are in one of the drawers of the plastic small parts cabinet. Such a clever place. Now how did these go together? Maybe Bruce will be able to figure it out. And so forth, long into the night.

At this point, I'm already sick of the trip. This year, however, I have a head start on the Baja Tour; I found my list from last year!

See ya,
Fast Granny
P.S. Left over after the pancake breakfast ride was a pair of navy blue polyester slacks and a
pair of navy blue terrycloth Bellweather bike shorts. Owner may claim sometime in January.

LETTER FROM THE OUTGOING EDITOR

It is with mixed emotions that I sit
here typing the last newsletter for 1986.
All in all the position of newsletter editor
is an exciting and creative way of making a
contribution to the club. There were some
months that I probably felt like the person
in the picture above by the time I got to
the mailbox, however.

I would like to thank Jim Davis and
Sue Given for their regular contributions.
And of course, who could forget Fast
Granny and her witty way of recounting our
many cycling adventures.

A big thank-you is extended to Steve
and Phyllis who faithfully prepared the
