TIME TRIALING IS
FOR TOURISTS: TOO!

Time trialling is sometimes call- the British Obsession, since so many clubs in England use it as a popular way for the individual to guage his/her fitness. Not only @o the racers use the time trial, but the tourists too!

What is time trialing? An all
Out effort to cycle a designated
course against the clock. The
riders start individually and are
separated by at least one minute
intervals. The real satisfaction
comes as you improve your times as
the season progresses.

December 12, bright sunny skies, and once again it's time to start on
7 another Baja odessey. Baja Xll this time. I leave San Diego with great
anticipation but also with feelings of trepidation. I am remembering last
year--the heat, the fatigue and the promises. Promises I made myself that
I would never do it again. The magic of Baja, the uniqueness of the trip
and the great feeling of accomplishment in Cabo San Lucas call me back to
a land I love more each time I visit.

Ten days into the trip and I am feeling incredibly strong. Rosie loves
Baja and sometimes almost seems to fly along by herself. All the great things
I remember from last year are still thé same: the really good bakeries (the
great bakery at Santa Rosalia); sunrise at Conception Bay; the really strong
afternoon tail-winds into Rosarito; the friendly Mexican people and the beaut-
iful Sea of: Cortez.

So many of the same people have returned again. Daddy Wags, our 51 year old tour leader, a real fly-open-shoes-untied sort of person and veteran of all 12 Baja tours. Merlyn, (for the tenth time) who knows the answers to all questions and likes to fiesta until three in the morning after riding 100 miles. Jennifer, "The Rag," who has mellowed much in the past year; now if she'd just slow down so the Hot Shots could keep up. lLoveable Griff, "The Hammer," his fifth Baja tour, and still whining the whole trip saying he Wasn't coming next year; he'd just plug his Baja viceo in the day we leave. Handsome Rob, (I forget how many times he's ‘€one the trip), cooking all his meals in his room as he hides from the ever-present kitchen flies and accompanying threats of Montezummas' Revenge. :.Baja John who needs no explanation here and myself. :

By Loreto, about the half-way point, the long days and hard miles have taken their toll. Out of 25 starters, four riders drop out anc Fast Granny catches a terrible cold complete with chills and fever. The two worst days of the trip follow Loreto, the day with the 20 mile hill and the 134 mile Saga into La Paz. If you take enough Midol you can do anything. Fortunately the supply held out even though at times I felt like the tour pharmacist in the mornings; six to unknot Daddy Wag's cramped leg; four to ease George's sore ankle; two to un-kink Rose's knee,

After La Paz, the tour is very simple and pleasant. Two more short days and you reach Cabo San Lucas. Two more days and your'e back in La Paz. BajaXll is history. Once again everyone scatters to the four winds, some to return another year, others never to be heard from again.

A week was spent in La Paz debating how to get back to Tijuana. John's big dream was to buy a $200 Mexican car and resell it at the border. Now Fast Granny loves adventure but this was just a little to bizarre for me.

I wanted to reload the bikes, ride out of town aways and hitchhike as there were a lot of places I hadn't had time to explore on the way down. That didn't sit well with John so we did the exciting thing and flew back.

Four days later and 1'm sitting in my own Living room. Whet a cultural shock! Monday for the hell of 14, 1 rode inte work to see if [| still had a job. Worked all day and rode home in darkness, rain, thunder, lightening and a 20 mile per hour head wind. Welcome back to reality!
