AUGUST MEETING -- TWC_ CLUB COOK-OFF

eo. Tacoma Wheelmen's Club members are in—
vited to demonstrate their cooking skills.

By decree of the (Coach), there will be
an official TWC CLUB COOK-OFF at the Aug-
ust meeting, Tuesday, August 18th.

WHO MAY ENTER: Any citizen from the
Kingdom of TWC.

OFFICIAL RULES: Any food worthy of being served on a bicycle tour may be entered.

Rule 1. All items used in preparation
must come to the cook-off in
a bicycle pannier.

Rule 2. All foods that are cooked
must be cooked on a camping
stove at the club meeting Aug-
ust: 18th.

Rule 3. All cooks must have a copy of
their recipes available at
the cook-off (approximately
20 copies).

OFFICIAL JUDGES: All club members that
are not offically entered in the cook—
Oo: will judge the event by offical sec-

ret ballot.

Bob Branson (assistant coach) will de-
clare the offical winners.

OFFICAL PRIZES: This is no unoffical
(cheap) event. There will be at least
five awards given (ranging anywhere in
value from $.01 to $25).

This event should be a fun way to see just

what people do on a bicycle tour for food.
Be sure you don't miss this fun event.

committee currently stands at four: Bill

The TURKEY CHASE is a bicycle ride sche-
duled for Sunday, November 8th.between 10am
and 3pm.

START OF RIDE: The ride will start in
downtown Tacoma.

REGISTRATION FEE: There will be a $6.00
entry fee. Two dollars will go to the
Pierce County Chapter of the Cancer Soc-
iety; two dollars will go into-the TURKEY
FUND: and two dollars will go toward the
administration of the event.

ROUTE: The ride will cover about 25-30
miles around the city of Tacoma. The cour-
se will take the riders to approximately
12 checkpoints where they will receive an
official stamp.

WIN A TURKEY: Each checkpoint stamp will
give the rider a chance to win a Thanksgiv-—
ing Turkey Certificate as well as other pri-
zes. Each 10th. or 12th. rider will win a
prize.

SPONSORS: The Tacoma Wheelmen's Club
would like to thank Southland Corporation &
7/11 Stores; and the Pierce County Cancer
Society for their willingness to assist us
with the Turkey Chase. Hopefully, this will
become an annual event.

FOURTH OF JULY
(Plan B)

Indecisiveness on the part of the Tacoma
Wheelmen forced Lisa and | to once again trek
over the mountains to ride with the Tri City
Wheelmen for the Grand and Glorious Fourth of
July weekend.

The bad news was, there was no sag wagon. The good news was, we were staying in hotels so all the camping gear stayed at home. Lisa arrived at my house with a trunk, | handed her a pannier and said ‘That's it kid." That was quickly filled. The pool toys and purple dinosaur to keep your beer afloat were left over. “It'll go in the rack trunk,” she said confidently. In fact, “It'll go in the rack trunk,” was repeated many times over. Finally all the really important stuff like the hair dryer and toys were stuffed somewhere in all the pockets

‘and we were ready. Up goes the tandem and we're off to Vantage, the rendezvous point.

The day was warm and the hill out of Vantage was long. The amount of water flying about reminded me of river rafting. It's a definite advan- tage to be a stoker during water fights. You can devote your whole attention to the really impor- tant matters at hand without worrying about handling the bike. Every available water hole was a refueling stop.

The pool party in Wenatchee was a classic. The dinosaur did in fact keep a Green Death at arm's reach and in the Belly Flop Contest, Lisa, in one fell swoop, lost her goggles and a strategic part of her bathing, suit. Contact lenses, however, did stay put. | created my own little contest when 1 entered the hot tub in a sleazy white T-shirt without a single thought about how | was going to get out.

Day Two was up over Blewett Pass to Cle Elum. Two miles into the pass, we encountered a house razing party. That's right, razing, complete with a bulldozer and six people seated in lawn chairs in front, sipping champagne. They were on their fourth bottle and having a grand old time getting toasted. Dave and | couldn't resist and entered the pile of rubble. We came up with a real treasure, an old tin 7-Up sign for old “what's her name's" sewing room.

We crested the pass and fought head winds,
hail, rain, thunder and lightening the last 12 miles
into Cle Elum. The morning sniveling about not
having a pool that night was silenced.

Day Three made up for the day before. Stiff tailwinds pushed us up the big hills into Ellensburg and put us into town for a second breakfast instead of lunch. Being the nice person | am, | traded my tandem seat for Damon’s Trek, a move | regretted when | realized there was a 13 mile downhill back into Vantage. What a blast! Nothing under 30 m.p.h. and on a loaded touring bike! | can't quite agree with his choice of seats and now realize why men go numb after a long bike ride.

What a fun three days! Neat ride. Neat people. New territory I'd never ridden in before. What more could a person ask for? —=====—= on:

Boston Cyclist Fined

In October of 1985 Gary Gofstein attended a wedding in Boston. When he left the party on his bicycle, Gofstein struck a car door that was suddenly opened in front of him. The accident wrecked the bicycle and damaged the car door. Massachusetts doesn’t have a law making a driver responsible for accidents caused by opening the driver’s door, and Gofstein was fined $1,350. Also, the car Gofstein collided with was registered in New Hampshire, where no-fault insurance is not required, and the insur- ance company made a case against him in the Somerville, Mass., Small Claims Court. Judge Heffernan was con- vinced that Gofstein was more than 50 percent at fault and charged him with the accident. Gofstein had reportedly taken the word of a well-meaning but uninformed lawyer who told him, “No problem, just go in and tell your story.” —Boston Area Bicycle Coalition

MILLERSYLVANIA LABOR DAY TOUR
September 5 - 7, 1987

What are you doing Labor Day Weekend? How about a beautiful 3-day tour through SW Washington. Finish the season with this 3-day tour of Pierce and Thurston counties. The first day will be a 59- mile ride over little used backroads from Orting to Millersylvania State Park. On Sunday there will be optional tours, swimming, and hiking. The last day will be a beautiful ride back to Orting.

The cost of $30 for adults and $18 for
children 12 and under will include break-—
fasts, suppers, sagwagon (to carry gear),
maps, and cabins.

Join us for a 3-day Labor Day Weekend Camping Trip, Sept. 5 - 7. Mileage will average 40 miles per day, with only two "challenging" hills per day. We will meet near Centralia then pedal 40 miles to Rainbow Falls. The second day will be a 47-mile ride to Lewis and Clark State Park.
