Those Tacoma Wheelman sure know how
to throw a picnic. Ride 25 miles...eat
until they bust...throw water balloons at
each other...then pedal another 25 miles
home.
That's a great picnic...if you miss-
ed it you'll just. never understand a
Wheelman's definition of a good time.
We'd like to thank the "Coach", Jim
Davis , Stan Sanders, Lori Wohlhueter,
Tracy Davis and Diane Taylor for making
this years picnic a fun event.

ls Rails-to Trails Coal-
ition will be hosting a booth at the Puy-
allup Fair, Sept 11=17, 1987. Supporters
of the proposed conversion of the aband-
oned BN Mc Millan/Carbonado railway pub-
lic recreation trail are needed to serve
3-to 4-hour shifts in the booth. Come
meet some new friends and help spread the
word. If we want this trail to happen,
we need to show Pierce County that there
is widespread support for it. Call Sue
Asher at home, 565-4359, or work, 572-3709,
to get your first choice of time and day.
Volunteers will receive FREE admission to
the Fair.

SEPTEMBER MEETING
The September Meeting will feature Pat
Tabet, a member of Dave Bogdon's team giving
a slide and video presentation of the 1987
RAAM Event.
Dave was sponsored by and rode an Alex
Moulton Bicycle to a 12th. place finish. It
should be an interesting show.
The knee is the most famous joint in sports. It is more than a meeting place be- tween the thigh and calf; it is a hinge and lever fdr cycling} and the center of the very system that allows the rider to pedal. For- tunately, cycling seldom causes damage to the knee except “in accidents.- In facr; cycling is excellent exercise for most knee condit- ions.
One specific problem is patella chondro- malacia, or kneecap wear and tear. This is when the kneecap shows a roughening or soft- ening of its back surface. It is caused by one of three conditions: (1) kneecap instab- ility; (2) a direct blow to the front of the kneecap; or (3) a genetic abnormality caus- ing growth of an extra band in the knee joint. Pain from chondromalacia centers in front of of the knee and intensifies with prolonged strenous pedaling.
PREVENTION - Avoid trauma; alternate
workouts with rest days.
TREATMENT - - Cold and hot packs; knee
braces; strengthening exercised.
