The Tacoma Wheelmen’s Club has agreed to
assist Pierce County Parks & Recreation in
sponsoring a new bicycling event - the Tour de
Pierce! This will be a family oriented ride of up
to 35 miles, to be held on a Sunday late in
September or early in October. The start will be
at the Tacoma Dome, and the route will
probably head towards Sumner and Puyallup.
Our club’s responsibilities will be in choosing
the route, and staffing the day of the event itself.
For our efforts, the club will receive a stipend
(similar to our arrangements with Cascade for
the STP).

Jon Turnipseed, Louis Boitano and Sue Given have already agreed to head up our club’s efforts for this event. If you'd like to help out or get in at the beginning stages, call Jon (565-8654) or

The Tacoma Wheelmen’s Club annuual
PICNIC would love to happen again this year,
but it needs a chairperson! The budget is ‘here
for another fine event, catered food, some
games, etc. All that is needed is a willing
volunteer to take charge and make a few
decisions. If you are the person for the job, call
Jon Turnipseed at 565-8654 right away. The
only deadline to be met is that information for
the August newsletter must be in by Friday, July
20.

This is your chance to jump in and save the day!

At the June club meeting officers were elected to serve until June of 1991. Jon Turnipseed is our new President, Bob Myrick is Vice Pre- sident, Joyce Clifford is treasurer, and Joanna Johnson is Secretary. We extend a big thank you to these people who are willing to give of their time to lead our club and make decisions for our club. A big thank you is also extended to Greg Grenier for his service as President for the last 6 months.

The Tacoma Public Works Department has
accumulated approximately $60,000 in funds
specifically for bicycle purposes within the City of
Tacoma. Ideas mentioned at the June meeting
include fog striping of Tyler, bike route map,
painting bike logos on streets and bike racks in

commercial areas or public facilities. Anyone who has any ideas about how this money should be spent please call Scott Pierson at 591-5392 or 759-9519.

TWC Board Minutes - June 6, 1990

1. The Peninsula Metric reported 316 registered riders (the rain really thinned out the numbers). The end result is a ride that did not turn a profit, but was very enjoyable for those who participated. Comments were favorable (except for the weather)

2. Club donations - with our treasury in a very solvent state, the board approved our budgeted donations. The Foothills Trail Coalition is receiv- ing $300.00 which includes $218 donated through the Daffodil Classic) and the BFW is receiving $861.00 ($41 of which was donated through the Daffodil. These two donations tollow our $1.000 donation last month to contiune our support of the Sprocketman Program in Pierce County.

3. The Bicycle Federation of Washington (BFW)
had requested our support in a new dues structure
for their organization. Following discussion at the
May club meeting, and this board meeting, our club
is recommending that the dues structure remain an
affiliation fee for clubs, with the encouragement
(not requirement) that clubs make a donation
equivilant to $.50 per rider for major events. Our
donation to the BFW supports this approach.

4. Club Picnic? Only when a chairperson can be
found. All suggestions are wlecome!

The Bicycle Federation of Washington is continu- ing in their efforts to improve bicycling in our state. The 1991 Legislative program is being worked on, and it appears that 1991 could be an important year for bicycling in our legislature. The Bicycle Safety bill which did not pass in 1990, will not just disappear. HB 3034 represents the starting point for development of comprehensive bicycle safety legislation to be introduced in the 1991 session. The BFW is looking for a lobbyist to hire for the 1991 legislative session. and is welcoming member- ships and donations to fund the hiring of a lobbyist. An important lesson learned in the 1990 session is that bicycle related legislation is coming, and it’s up to us to help shape itto be the best it can possibly be.

In other activities. the Mountain Bike Task Force has gathered the funding to hire a part time Mountain Bicycle Coordinator, Ken Talbot. His duties include identifying and supporting offroad bicycling groups in Washington. organizing trail patrols and trail maintenance work parties, and raising funds to support the BFW’s Mountain Bike Task Force. Funding for these activities is currently being solicited from bike shops, with matching funds from the BFW treasury.
