Sign up to paticipate in one of Washington’s
biggest cycling events - not as a rider, as a
CHECKPOINT WORKER!

There are 8,000 registered riders this year and
they need our help. Come out and enjoy the fun
while helping support the riders. Saturday, June
30 and Sunday, July 1, are the days to mark on
your calendar. Volunteers are needed for one or
both days, for all day or any part of the day.
Saturday's work will begin at approximately
6am, and finish up at about 2pm. Sunday’s one
day riders come through even earlier, so the
work hours are 5:30am - 11:00am.

Call Karen Whitney, 565-2742, to sign up. This
is an incredible experience that you won’t want
to miss.

Our June club meeting will be an exciting one.
The program for the evening will give both men
and women a lot to think about in the world of
touring. Womantrek representatives will share
their bicycle touring programs from around the
world. Imagine touring in exotic places such as
Urangi, Nepal, Wanaka, Cusco, Bhutan and
Baka. This promises to be an unusual and
interesting presentation.

Also at our June meeting is the very important
election of officers. (With nothing to fear - our
May meeting saw the nominations of volunteers
for all 4 offices.) Currently the nominees are:

President - Jon Turnipseed,
Vice President - Bob Myrick,
Treasurer - Joyce Clifford,
Secretary - Joanna Johnson.

Any additional nominations will be taken from
the floor. Join with many other club members
at our meeting, Tuesday, June 19, 7:00pm, at
the Oakland Recreation Center, 4020 South
31st (one block north of Center Street, one
block east of Tyler).

If you would like to spend the weekend of June
23-24 in a kayak in the San Juan Islands during
the peak of the killer whale season, you must call
immediately. Bob Myrick, 473-7455, or Mark
Lewis, 378-5767, can sign you up for this
adventure. The cost is approximately $130, and no
experience is necessary. You might even plan a
few extra days to tour the islands by land.

Mileage Log Updates

To ensure that you receive credit for all your club
miles ridden at Banquet time, make sure that you
are keeping your mileage log up to date. Any ride
listed in our newsletter counts toward club miles,
but we only have access to information from club
rides where participant lists were turned in. Your
log should also include the centuries and tours that
were lisied in our newsletier. Diane Taylor, our

Each month since March our club has included
a camping trip in the ride calendar. These trips
have been enjoyed by participants, and always
result in fun stories.

In March, 11 members journeyed to Millersyl-
vania State Park. Two 50 mile days in beautiful
weather were separated by one very cold night.
At least two of those campers have now invested
in down sleeping bags.

The April trip saw four intrepid campers off to
Kanaskat-Palmer State Park for one night. A
Saturday stop at the Black Diamond Bakery,
and an all-you-can-eat breakfast at the Cumber-
land Fire Station on Sunday (their annual
fisherman’s breakfast), made the trip especially
pleasant. Hopefully those pleasures outweighed
the rain on the trip home.

Ten campers ventured to Scenic Beach State Park, near Seabeck, on the May trip. The route was scenic, but hilly. Traveling about 55 miles each way made the trip a little strenuous. Rain once again marred the return home. It’s a good thing that these TWC campers are a hearty bunch.

In June, the camping trip will be held on a
Sunday & Monday. Finally a trip for all our
members who work on Saturdays. Starting with
a carpool to Port Townsend early Sunday
morning, the campers and their bikes will catch
the Keystone Ferry to Whidby Island. Then it’s
north through Coupeville and Oak Harbor, on
the way to Deception Pass State Park. Inter-
ested campers should call Harvey or Diane
Lister (h:752-8636, w:564-1422) to get more
information.

If loaded camping appeals to you, but you're
unsure of the needed equipment, don’t hesitate
to ask other club members for advice. There is
a wealth of knowledge in our club that is there
for the asking. Don’t let a few worries keep you
from trying this fun form of travel.

Survey Synopsis

Without ride leaders our club could not perform
its primary function. We need them, appreciate
them, and are looking for ways to encourage
members to become one.

A respectable 33% of survey respondents in-
dicate that they have led a ride for the club.
Unfortunately, that leaves 67% who have not.
Getting assistance to lead rides would help many
of you to consider trying it. The strongest
requests were for assistance with routes and
maps, co-leaders, and ride leader classes. Our
Touring Captain, Diane Taylor, reports that she
is willing to help pair new ride leaders with
experienced leaders. This will help answer many
questions and quell many worries for the new
leaders. It doesn’t have to be a frightening
experience. Just have an idea of where you
usually like to ride, and take people there. The
leader does their best to keep tabs on the group,
but is not responsible for mechanical assistance
or looking out for every rider’s persona! needs.
The riders just appreciate having someone else
there to lead the way and make the desicions. If
Diane calls you with the invitation to lead a ride,
don’t be shy. Say yes, it’s fun!

Club members were also asked if the mileage awards and patches given at the banquet are an incentive to participate in club rides. While 67% said that they are not, the members present at the meeting to discuss the survey felt that this answer does not tell the whole story. It is believed that our incentive to ride is coming from within and not from patches. However, most do enjoy the recognition for their participation. The general concensus was that patches, or some other form of recognition will continue in our club, even though we all know that you're riding just because you want to. Hurray for bicycling!

Daffodil Classic and
Deninsula Metric
Highly Rated

In a recent Bicycle Paper survey, our own
Daffodil Classic and Peninsula Metric Centuries
were rated among the top five favorite centuries in
the Northwest. Specifically, the Daffodil came in
number 2 (behind STP) and the Peninsula was
number 4!

We can be proud of ourselves for producing two
such fine events. with scenic routes, well manned
checkpoints, clearly marked routes, good snacks.
and reasonable entry fees.

Daffodil Classic Report

At the Mav club meeting we heard a preliminary
report on the Daffodil Classic. Ride chairmen
Steve Lay and Greg Grenier deserve our thanks
and compliments.

There were 1780 riders registered for the Daffo- dil. We served 2300 bananas, 10 cases of honeydew melon. 200 pounds of grapes, 1,000 french rolls. and 2,000 bread sticks. Our profits appear to be approximately $6,500, so our treasury is in good shape for 1990, and our plans for donations should go smoothly.

45 volunteers helped make the day a success, and
at the end of a hard day’s work the volunteers ate
32 pizzas. The assistance of the Volunteers
Northwest with their radio contact was a real plus
for our event also.

Especially well received were the signs posted all
through the course reminding both motorists and
cyclists to be cautious and courteous as they
shared the road with each other. These attractive
and professional signs are a real asset to our club
and our events.

A huge thank you is extended to all who helped plan and worked on the Fifteenth Annual Daffo- dil Classic. Be proud of yourselves - you're the

greatest!

1. Preliminary report on the Daffodil Classic -
uccessful, 1780 registered, positive feedback. It’s
till too soon for a complete financial report. That

Insurance - We have acquired liability insurance ugh the LAW (League of American Wheel- en) affiliate program. This will cost us $261.00 (cost approximate depending on end of year audit), nd is offered through Marsh & McLennan nsurance Brokers of Baltimore. Maryland. Diane ister is acting as contact person for the club with| e company.

. The SR 509 highway proposal begins its public
earings this month The club should follow it to
elp assure bicycle access in whatever the~ finai;

. The BFW (Bicycle Federation of Washington) is roposing a dues structure that would include a .50 per rider pledge for major event rides throughout the state. The sense of the board at this time is that this proposal seems workable for the' uture, but that our donation for this year must be ased on our actual income from the Daffodil lassic and Peninsula Metric. In future years this mount would be considered as the price of the levent is set. This will be further discussed at the| |May 15 club meeting.
