It’s not a new lite beer commercial, Donald Trump
won't be spending his allowance here, and Greg
Lemond will be missing, but the TOUR DE PIERCE
must go on and we need your help. . .

The Tour de Pierce is a FAMILY FUN bike ride in
and around Pierce County sponsored by the Pierce
County Parks Department and the Tacoma Stars. The
ride will have three (or more) loops which vary from
12 miles to 33 miles in length. The ride is scheduled
for Sunday, October 7, with registration between 9am
and 12 noon (route is open until 4pm).

The Parks Dep’t. has contracted the services of the
TWC to help make this event a great success. The
route, which begins at the Red parking lot of the
Puyallup Fairgrounds, will run through Puyallup,
Sumner, Alderton and McMillan, and was designed by
our club members.

Besides designing the course, we have been asked to provide other volunteers for the day of the ride.

CAPITAL BICYCLING CLUB TO
HOST NATIONAL BICYCLE RALLY

The summer of 1991 will be a busy one for cyclists in the Northwest. In addition to USCF Nationals at
Marymoor, the Capital Bicycling Club has agreed to host the League of American Wheelmen [L.A.W.]
1991 National Rally and the National Congress of Bicyclists at The Evergreen State College July 3-7. The
Bicycle Federation of Washington [BFW] will simultaneously be hosting Probike Northwest ‘91.

The National Rally is a four day event of mostly recreational riding drawing riders from across the country. It was last held in the Northwest in 1983, when the Cascade Bicycle Club had 900 attendees. The National Congress of Bicyclists is the Annual Meeting of the L-A.W., and is held concurrently with the National Rally. The entire L.A.W. Board of Directors will be here for the Congress.

Probike Northwest is an educational forum focusing on bicycle program development, facility engineering, safety education, and event promotion held every two years somewhere in the Northwest. In 1985 it was held in Olympia; in 1989 we traveled to Victoria. Probike draws participation from bicycle professionals, transportation specialists, bicycle club officers and others. The 1991 Probike Northwest will be the educational portion of the National Rally.

Finally, the traditional weekend for the Rally coincides with the traditional weekend for the Capital
Lakefair Criterium. Race schedule permitting, the Criterium will be the “wrap-up” event of the Rally
(veekend.

The Capital Bicycling Club is a strong, but small club, active in L-A.W. touring, BFW Advocacy, USCF
racing and mountain biking. Those of you with experience on the Two-County Double Metric Century, the
Wolf Haven [formerly Yelm Autumn Metric] Century, the Jackson Prairie Ramble, or the Capital Lakefair
Criterium know that we work hard to put on great events. This one is a lot bigger. We will need all the
help we can get to put on a successful rally.

We will need to mark approximately 20 routes from 10 miles to 150 miles in length, plus routes in the Capital Forest for mountain bikes. We need “ride escorts” (rather than leaders) for about 10 rides per day. We will need help with literature production, mailings, and registration. The Exhibit Hall will require an Exhibit Director and a gatekeeper. Probike Northwest ‘91 still needs a Program Director and a host of volunteers. We'd like some help from our good neighbor to the north.

We also need people to lead “Pre-Rally” and “Post-Rally” tours. The largest Pre-Rally Tour will be STP, which has agreed to reserve 500 registration slots for out-of-region Rally participants. We desperately need a group to take on the responsibility of finding Seattle area housing for STP Pre-Rally riders, to lead a Portland to Olympia ride following STP, and to arrange for Portland - Olympia transportation for those who do not want to ride back. We will be asking B.. KES. to run a ride like TOSRV as a Pre-Rally tour for those who do not make the May 1 STP cutoff, or don’t want to ride with 10,000 cyclists. We need some Post-Rally tours, and the TWC would be a perfect sponsor of a three day Mt. Rainier tour following the Rally.

Northwest Women’s
Stride & Ride in
Woodinville, Sept. 9

The 2nd annual Northwest Women’s Stride
& Ride is coming to the French Creek Cellars Winery
in Woodinville, Sunday, Sept. 9.

This bicycle ride and walk,beginning and
ending at the winery, is the only all-women event of
its kind in the Northwest (although interested men are
welcome as well).

All ages and abilities are invited to enjoy
bicycle loops of 10, 30 and 60 miles, or a 10-kilome-
ter walk. The longer bicycle routes will follow rural
country roads along rolling terrain out toward Red-
mond (shorter loop) and Carnation (longer loop). The
Shortest bike ioop and walk will head oui along the
Sammamish River Trail near the Ste. Michelle
Winery.

The Stride & Ride benefits the local chapter of The American Lupus Society. The Society helps

battle this auto-immune disease which causes the

body to attack its own normal tissue. Lupus primarily
affects women.

Check-in and day-of-event registration is open from 8 a.m. to noon for $15 per person. Fanny packs, water bottles, nutritious snacks and refresh- ments and sag support will all be available.

French Creek Cellars Winery is located at
17221 - 132nd Ave. N.E. in Woodinville. Behind the
winery is a grassy picnic area alongside Little Bear
Creek.
