Michael Kane, physical therapist at Pacific Sports Therapy, will be our guest speaker. He will discuss injury prevention and knee maintenance--areas of critical concern for increased bicycle riding this season.

Bicycle fitting will cap the
evening. If you are numb or hurt
in the wrong places while riding,
this information could save your
summer.

"ROUND RAINIER TOUR
JULY 8 TO 13, 1991

Sue Given says openings still exist for the "Round Rainier Tour in July. If you want great cycling in the Cascade mountains with good accommodations, food, pool and hot tub, showers, sag wagon and challenging terrain and weather, call Sue now at (206)565- 0535.

The tour will begin Monday and
end Saturday in Olympia. You
need to arrange your own lodging
for Sunday, July 7, if you live out
of the area.

Northwest Trek, Pioneer Farm, Elbe’s Historic Steam Railroad, Longmire Lodge, and the Visitor Center at Paradise, are on the itinerary. Daily mileage ranges from 40 to 60 with some serious elevation gain on two days. Optional rides on a rest day climb to Sunrise and its Visitor Center, or to Crystal Mountain Resort for the chair lift ride to its summit. Rain gear and some multiple layers are recommended.

Accommodations include Eatonville’s Mill Valley Motel, the historic Paradise Inn on Mount Rainier, and the Alta Crystal Resort with its swimming pool and hot tub. All rooms have showers, and there are a variety of sleeping arrangements. :

Pierce County Parks and

Recreation present its summer
bicycle ride, Tour de Pierce.

Tour de Pierce is a ride through
the Puyallup and Sumner areas on
Sunday, July 14th. The ride is a
“fun” ride with special attention
given to families and novice riders.
Volunteers are needed to mark and
monitor the course, staff the rest
stop, and help with registration.

A special feature of this year’s
Tour de Pierce is rest stop
entertainment, including mountain
bike skill demonstrations, a Pierce
County Sheriff Canine Unit
demonstration, antique bicycles,

music, and an appearance by

ADDITIONAL RIDE OPPORTUNITIES(For the daring, adventurous, and “I don’t know any better”):

On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June, a group will meet at Jan Wieser’s home at 10:00 am to ride up to the Enumclaw, Black Diamond, Buckley area. The distance will be 20 to 50 miles depending on who is present, alive, and their ambition level. Call Jan the night before if you plan to take part in the ride, and the gang will wait for you. The phone is 833-6346 for information.

Ken Coffman wants to bicycle around the Olympic Peninsula on Hwy 101, preferably not alone. He
wants to do this in three days.(Maybe he will be alone.) Pace will be a code 3 or 4. A sag wagon will
accompany the group for emergencies and supplies. The riders will camp in parks on Hwy 101. No definite
date has been set--this will depend on rider response. Give Ken a call at 876-1723 and join him for a beautiful
ride.

Bob Myrick and William Hoehne are going to ride from Tacoma to the Long Beach Peninsula August
10-17. The idea is to see all the sights on the Peninsula and eat at The Ark restaurant one evening during the
week. Call Bob(473-7455) or William(759-4464) if you would like to join-in and discuss lodging preferences,
etc.

Please clarify the 10% discount offered by some area bicycle shops to club members with the shop owner before completing a purchase. Some shops have different policies. Southwell Schwinn has stated the following policy: “The 10% discount is limited to repair parts and accessories for your bike or self with an individual price(per piece)of no more than one hundred dollars.”

Also note that Point Defiance Bike And Board, 5024 N. Pearl Street, has gone out of business.

Sprocketman!

Proceeds from Tour de Pierce will be applied towards Sprocketman Classroom Education and other bicycle programs sponsored by Pierce County. This school year over 7,500 children in Pierce County were reached by the Sprocketman program.

By helping with Tour de Pierce, Tacoma Wheelmen have an opportunity to promote bicycle awareness: and to introduce new and young riders to bicycling. Tour de Pierce volunteers will be rewarded with a 1991 Tour de Pierce t-shirt.

BICYCLE SAFETY BILL
BECOMES LAW

Washington is very pleased to
announce that House Bill 1081, the
Bicycle Safety Bill, was signed into
law by Governor Gardner on
Thursday, May 16, 1991.

This bill provides for the
creation of a Bicycle Program
Manager within the Department of
Transportation, outlines steps for
improvement in the State Patrol’s
bicycle safety education program,
directs the Department of
Transportation to create minimum
standards for right-
edgestriping(with mention of the
hazards created by raised pavement
markers), and clearly defines the
bicycle as a vehicle.

Enclosed in this Newsletter is a new Tacoma-Pierce County Bicycle map produced by your Club, the City, and the County. Many thanks to City staff, including Lynn Price, Gary Wheeler, Norm Landry, Scott Pierson, Jody Clark, Paul Woolen, and Bob Myrick; and County staff, including Steve Gorcester, Chris Beckman, Mick Davies, Teddy Levenson, Mike Dobb, Rico Baroga, Jan Ortiegson, and Vicki Cannard.

The map was produced in
conjunction with “Bike To Work”
week, the creation of a Pierce
County Transportation plan, and a
City Transportation plan.

Comments on the map are needed from you regarding new routes, and the suitability of routes and features shown. We know we should show bicycle shops, park ’n ride lots, transit centers, campgrounds, etc.

Do you enjoy talking to other cyclists?

Do you enjoy meeting people from other parts of the country?

Do you have some time to spare on Tuesday or Wednesday, July 2nd and 3rd, or on Sunday or Monday,
July 7th and 8th?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, you might be one of the needed volunteers to assist with an essential ingredient of this summer’s League of American Wheelmen National Rally.

All the folks who are flying in from out of town have been offered the opportunity to purchase
transportation from the airport to Olympia. Vehicles are being rented, gathering places are lined up, but we
still need drivers and greeters.

Some drivers will be shuttling from the airport to Angle Lake Cyclery, while others will be driving from there to Olympia. If you can donate a few hours(or more)to this interesting cause, please give Diane Lister a call(752-8636). Questions can also be directed to Diane.

What do you carry in your bicycle bags? Grey Poupon? <A copy of Proust’s Remembrance Of Things Past? How about some first aid supplies? Bicycle USA(Magazine of The League Of American Wheelmen), in the May, 1991 issue, has a good article by David Egan on page 10, listing sensible, quality items to have along when you go for a ride. These items can be purchased at a drug or grocery store for less than some first aid kits. You can make your own kit from the supplies with a zip-lock bag and drop it into your pannier. The rest of the supplies will do nicely in your medicine cabinet at home for emergencies. Next time, if you have an accident, you will not have to bleed all the way home. . .
