After lying on his back and kicking his feet in the air, a majority of the members attending the TWC meeting on June 18th elected Bob Myrick president for the next year. One member said such campaign tactics deserved recognition.

Carla Gramlich was elected our
new vice-president, and Sylvia
Russell is the new Club secretary.
Joyce Clifford, who served
faithfully during the last year as
treasurer, was re-elected to that
position.

In a pre-election speech Bob Myrick promised to raise our taxes and develop a _ fide leader program(see adjoining article). Some members were encouraged that such a courageous platform could get him elected.

Members should note that our
next Club meeting will be on
September 17th. There will be no
Club meetings in July and August.
Go for a ride instead.

The heart of our club is
organized bicycling activities. You
can play a role by leading rides
that interest you at your level of
skill and fitness.

The first thing you need is a
calendar. If you do not see any
rides that interest you in this
Newsletter, take out your calendar
and go to work. Pencil in some
rides for July and call the Rideline
a few days before your ride. If
you are really good at this pencil
work, look clear into August and
plana ride. Then, call the Touring
Captain with the details of your
ride. The Touring Captain needs
this information by the third
Tuesday of each month, so the ride
calendar can be published in the
Newsletter.

Remember, we now have a good
bicycle map for Tacoma and Pierce
County, so it should be easier to
plan your rides. Also, you should

save the ride maps from rides you
would like to lead someday. Some
people have been known to lead
rides without a map or written
directions.

All members, as well as ride
leaders, should carry a few repair
items and first aid supplies when
participating in a ride.

We truly want a variety of rides
on weekends, and rides during the
week for shift workers, layabouts,
and retired people.

COVERED BRIDGE RIDE
CORVALLIS, OREGON

are to drive down on September

7th. Steve and Carla have made
arrangements to stay in Corvallis at
the local Boy Scout’s Cabin.

The century is Sunday,
September 8th. We did this ride
last year. The ride is flat and the
checkpoints had good food.

A Letter To The Editor:

I have found The Wheelmen to
be a wonderful Club for people
who want to improve their cycling
skills. But if I hadn’t joined at the
Daffodil ride, I would never have
known about the Club.

Could we increase our visibility and gain more members by putting fliers in area bike shops describing the Club’s activities and advantages(e.g. newsletters, educational programs, organized rides, etc.)? Perhaps shop managers would be willing to pass out such fliers to each new bike purchaser.

If this idea sounds workable, I’d
be happy to work with other Club
members in creating and

distributing the fliers.

The new bicycle bridge on South Thirty-first street near Delin was completed and used the first time yesterday morning. A large number of wheelmen tested it, and found that it more than pleased them.

The bridge has the distinction of being the first truss bridge ever built in Tacoma. It is 330 feet long, 110 feet high in the highest point, and has a floor 12 feet wide. The approach is graded with beaten clay and gravel. The grade up from the South Tacoma avenue

bridge is 3.5 per cent. . .
