Kitchen #4, Spanaway Park, is
the location for the Annual Club
Picnic on Saturday, September 14,
1991.

The picnic menu features
salmon, with hamburgers, hotdogs,
chips, fresh fruit, corn on the cob,
green salad, baked beans, and soft
drinks.

Two rides will help you warm- up to the picnic activities: Mark Smith will lead a 40 mile, code 3 ride starting and ending at kitchen #4 beginning at 9: . For those who want to ride their bicycles to the picnic from the north end, William Hoehne will lead a 15 mile, code 1.5 ride from McDonald’s at Westgate(N. 21st & Pearl)to the Park, also starting at 9:00am. We will leave the Park at 4:00pm to return to McDonald’s.

Volleyball will start at 11:00am,

accompanied with chips, fresh
fruit, and soft drinks.
Lunch will be served at

12:30pm, followed by organized
games with prizes at 2:00pm.
Some games will require bicycles,
so you may want to ride your

bicycle to the picnic. Awards will

CLUB INFORMATION--NEW BUDGET--SWAP MEET

A new season of Club meetings begins on Tuesday, September 17,
1991, at the Oakland Community Center, 4020 S. 31st. Meeting time
is 7:00pm.

New and old members and guests are extended a warm welcome to
attend this meeting to learn about the Club, vote on the new budget,
and have an opportunity to sell or swap bicycle equipment. Club
meetings are a great occasion to meet people in normal clothes that you
have only seen in helmets and odd combinations of tops, bottoms, and
shoes.

The program portion of the meeting will help old and new members
become more involved with their Club by discussing upcoming events,
how to become a ride leader, volunteering for activities, and answering
your questions.

Club business will consist of a presentation of the 1991-92 budget to be voted on by members present.(See article below.)

To complete the evening, bring your bicycle equipment to sell or
swap with other members. . . .And, of course, there will be something
to eat.

This month’s Club meeting is especially important because we will
be considering a proposed budget for July 1, 1991 through July 30,
1992. This balanced budget raises the price of our ride events, raises
membership dues, increases member benefits, and provides strong
support to local bicycle programs.

To increase net revenue by $5000.00, the Daffodil and Peninsula
Metric ride events would be priced at $7.00 for preregistered riders and
$9.00 or $10.00 for day-of-ride riders. This pricing will still be about
the lowest in the area.

To increase net revenue by $805.00, dues would increase to $12.00

Green River Gorge and Snoqualmie rides--two to plan for next year. . .

Qn Sunday, August 4th, the Green River Gorge Ride lured me to drive 40 plus miles from Tacoma to Enumclaw. Although varying length rides were offered, the longest was 53 miles, instead of the advertised 67, since the gorge bridge was closed even to foot traffic. The scenery was wonderful, very similar to the wide open hay fields with an occasional cow that is seen on Lopez Island. Two challenging hills give one a feeling of accomplishment. The organizers report that only about 150 people turn out for this ride. Maybe the hills explain why! But the beautiful scenery and smooth, low traffic roads that stretch out with frequent turns will call me back--perhaps in October in a 48 mile version birthday ride. Watch for it in the ride calendar.

The Snoqualmie ride, 45 miles from Tacoma, has a festival atmosphere with a number of simultaneous events. 750 riders took part, with 1000 expected next year. Food served at the checkpoints is the main draw--gazpacho, carrot cake muffins, couscous, herbal tea, and soft, fresh bagels with cream cheese. The area restaurants do well. Routes are marked, but turns, loops, and double backs can get you lost. I got lost twice and missed two loops, but eventually my cyclometer told me I had ridden 67 miles. I could feel dumb, but others had the same experience. Perhaps the routes will be more easily understood next year.

be given in several categories to bicycle riders. For those of you who may not cycle much, but still look like cyclists, plan to enter the first annual Tacoma Wheelmen’s “Great Legs” contest. Certificates that can be proudly displayed at your workplace will be awarded! So shave, sunbathe, lather on body oil, pump iron, whatever, so you can go down in local cycling history.

We will also be trying the Tire
Twist, the Water Bottle Squirt, and
the Checkpoint Challenge, along
with time trials for changing a flat
tire. Great prizes, of course, for
winners in all these events.

At 3:00pm a “Make your own
sundae” session will be served by
the board members and staff, and,
to complete the day, door prizes
will be drawn at 3:30pm.

Plan to attend all or part of the
day. Members of the Tacoma
Wheelmen will cook the food.
Volunteers to cook, set-up, and
clean-up are always appreciated.

for singles and $15.00 for families. Our 350 members now pay $4025.00, and this would raise to $4830.00. The Newsletter and The Northwest Cyclist budget is $5250.00. The banquet and picnic budget is $2037.00. The Board proposes that dues should be closer to the basic cost of supporting a member. Since we are a non-profit organization, we have to be prudent in making sure that our

ride events do not overly subsidize
the benefits enjoyed. by members.
Dues have not been raised for as
long as we can remember.

This year’s budget provides a $1000.00 item for a ride leader and ride enhancement program. Jon Turnipseed, our Touring Captain, is authorized to develop this program. The basic idea is to provide incentives for ride leaders, such as a unique ride leader jersey or a pizza feed for ride leaders. You would have to lead a minimum number of rides to qualify for these awards.

In the area of ride enhancements, Jon may provide a subsidy for a group meal, camping fees, or motel fees. For example, $50.00 could be provided to subsidize a group meal on a ride. Likewise, the Club would continue its’ policy of paying for campground fees, and could provide a small subsidy for motel rides.

The budget also provides $2000.00 to have the Northwest Cyclist paper delivered directly to your home. This $5.00 per member benefit eliminates a laborious process whereby Don Izenman has prepared the paper for distribution to you. The paper will arrive at your home in a more timely manner, so you will not miss important news and cycling events.

Finally, the budget provides
strong support to local bicycle
programs. The Bicycle Federation
of Washington(BF W)would receive
50 cents per rider, or $1250.00
from our ride events if they are
profitable. This is the suggested
amount from BFW to continue

support of important State wide

programs and lobbying efforts.

The Bike-To-Work program started by Pierce County last year would be provided $1000.00. This program was the impetus for the City and County to make our new bicycle route map. This is an important item since the County will not be enjoying a $25,000.00 grant from the Department of Ecology this year. The Morning News Tribune, Puget Sound Bank, and other businesses will be helping this important program.

The SprocketPerson bicycle
safety program for kids would be
given $1000.00 so the County can
continue this vital project. Over
7500 children benefited from this
effort last year.

The Rails-To-Trails Coalition would be given $500.00 to continue its work to provide bicycle trails throughout the County. The Cascade Bicycle Club recently gave $500.00 to the coalition.

Several TWC members are
heading to Spokane the weekend of
September 28th and 29th to
participate in Tour Des Lacs--a
two-day bicycle tour through the
lake spotted countryside between
Spokane and Coeur d’Alene,
Idaho. The ride is supported,
including baggage service between
Spokane and Coeur d’Alene.
Three routes will be designated
between Spokane and Coeur
d’Alene--40 miles, 80 miles, and
120 miles. Riders can choose
among the route options each day
to ride an 80 mile, 120 mile, 160
mile, or 200 mile weekend.

Washington’s new Rails-To- Trails Centennial Trail serves as the 40 mile route between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. The trail follows the Spokane River to Coeur d’Alene Lake. Tour Des Lacs offers an opportunity to ride another portion of Washington’s 363 miles of Rails-To-Trails. Here at home, Pierce County wants to join Washington’s Rails-To-Trails system.

The foothills trail is a proposed
25 mile Rails-To-Trails for Pierce
County. The proposed trail
follows a former Burlington-
Northern Railroad line between the
communities of McMillin, Orting,
South Prairie, Buckley, Wilkeson
and Carbonado. TWC knows this

area very well as part of loop 2 of
the Daffodil Classic. As more and
more of Pierce County is

developed, the need for a trail is
self-evident. Planning for the trail
is critical in light of recent land
sales in this area of the County to
developers. —

Referendum 91-3 directs Pierce
County to continue planning for the

Foothills Trail. The referendum will appear on the November election ballot in Pierce County. Tacoma Wheelmen can support the Foothills Trail by voting “yes” on Referendum 91-3 in November. Letter To The Editor:

This letter is prompted by my
need to be a “consistent
conservationist.”

During the week I ride my bicycle to work and on errands. Then, on week-ends, I drive solo in my van 90 plus miles to take part in organized rides!! How much better I would feel if others were riding with me, i.e., carpooling.

Would having a regular time and
place to meet help? I suggest the
parking lot at TJ Maxx, highway
16 and South Union in Tacoma, at
8:30a.m.

Unless something comes up,

morning, September 15th, to drive
to the Wolf Haven Century. I will
