Dear Bob: I would like to thank you
and the Rails to Trails people for the
great trail we rode on today. We rode
27 miles on the Heartland Trail, from
Park Rapids to Walker. N. Dakota is
a great state. The rain made everything
green, and we had tail winds most of
the time. The tour is great, and I am
enjoying it. Now I realize that lama
much stronger biker than when I
started.

CLUB MEMBERS HELP MAKE
EVENTS A SUCCESS

I wish to thank all of the volunteers who helped out at the Spanaway check point for the Seattle-to-Portland bicycle ride put on by the Cascade Bicycle Club in Seattle. Everyone who helped did at least 110%, and the check point would not have been successful without you.

All the “regulars” were there:
Steve & Phyllis, Don & Lori,
Diane & Harvey, Hank & Hazel,
Rocky, Bob & Joyce Joyner, Tim,
Bob & Pat Bronson, and a new
face--Jim Clawson.

It would be nice if more of you
newer members were willing to
help out if you are not riding-the-
ride. It is a fun event, and a
chance to meet other members
while having a good time.

Helping at a check point is one
way to get involved in the Club
without having to do a 50-80 mile
ride. The time required is short--
about 2 hours, and what you put
into the Club will increase your
satisfaction.

I hope at next year’s S.T.P.,

Cue sheets or map provided. 13-16 mph. 4. Fast pace-very limited stops. Cue sheets or map provided. 16+mph. Maps provided for all rides over 35 miles.

Tuesday night “Bike and Bites Rides”: Does bicycling get your appetite up? Then you may want to
join the Tuesday evening rides. The leader cautions that riders should anticipate covering 30 miles in 2
hours or less, before going to chow down. (Actually, the eating part is optional.) If you have a suggestion
on restaurants located on or near a good 30 mile ride, please give Cynthia Hammer a call(752-0801). IN
THE EVENT OF RAIN, THESE RIDES WILL BE CANCELLED.

Orcas Island Camping Trip, August 3rd & 4th: We will meet at the Federal Way Park N Ride, off 320th & I-5 east of the Sea-Tac Mall, at 7:00am. The campers will drive up to Anacortes to the ferry terminal. (Parking has been available at the terminal.) We will bicycle on to the 10:45am ferry to Orcas. The trip will take us up some hills and down into East Sound--then on to Moran State Park. Camp will be set-up at Moran and more bicycling will be available. Optional trips to Doe Bay and a great view from Mt. Constitution are possible. Give Carla or Steve a call if you need more information. Steve(Tacoma)924- 7235,days. Mary Bridge Bike Rodeo, August 10th, with 1 hour sessions beginning at 2:00pm at the Lakewood
Mall. This rodeo is for children 5 to 11 years of age, and they will learn safe riding skills, rules of the
road, injury prevention, safety, and have an opportunity to practice and have their bicycles inspected. The
rodeo is free to participants. WOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO ASSIST IN THE RODEO DURING
THE ONE HOUR SESSIONS FROM 2 TO 6 PM. Bob Myrick will lead a ride to the rodeo, starting from
Pinch’s Deli in Spanaway at 10:00am. The ride will go to Steilacoom for lunch, go to the rodeo for the 2
and 3pm sessions, and return to Pinch’s Deli. Call Bob Myrick for details(473-7455).

Klein Classic, August 18th: No, you do not have to own a Klein to ride in the Klein Classic. Brian Wester is planning on riding the timed 100K. Anyone else interested in the timed 100K can meet Brian at 8:00am in the start area. The start for the timed 100K is 8:15am. Registration fee includes a commemorative mug and a post-ride barbecue dinner. For more information on the Klein Classic call Eric Forsythe at 1-736-1313 days, or 1-748-1734 evenings. more of you newer members who are just getting into riding and do not feel quite ready to do the S.T.P., will at least help at the check point. The Club is growing, and all of us “oldies” can’t do it forever. We would like to help more new members get involved by having a buddy system. An old member can help a new member learn how to chair an annual event, or lead rides. You all know me-- when I have something to say, I say it.

To add to this “thank you”, the Cascade Club is having a picnic in honor of all the volunteers who helped out. Cascade would like all of you who worked mixing orange juice, cutting fruit, keeping tables stocked, and generally making the check point a success, to come out and PARTY.

11 to 17. One activity will be a meal at
The Ark restaurant. If you would like to

Steve Brown and Carla Gramlich will host this ride on September 7 & 8. Group will meet behind the Tacoma Mall Cinemafeast side)at 7:00am on the 7th to drive to Corvallis, Oregon. This is about a five-hour drive. Participants will re- group at the Scout Cabin by Avery Park in Corvallis(maps to cabin will be provided). The cabin has a kitchen and bathrooms. Riders will sleep on the floor. Showers are not available, but there is a hose outside.

At 3:00pm there will be a_ short
afternoon ride around Corvallis(25 miles).
See Corvallis, home town of Steve Brown.
He will show “lawns I have mowed.”
Dinner at 6:30pm. Cook your meat on a
grill.

On the 8th, breakfast will be pancakes provided by Chef Steve Brown. At 6:30am ride to Fairgrounds—$5.00 fee. 7:00am--ride the Century. After ride, return to cabin for clean-up and trip to Tacoma. Call Steve or Carla at 941- 3752.

Jan Wieser and friends are going to
Spokane in September to participate in
Tour des Lacs. The ride offers 2 days of
riding to Coeur d’Alene and back. Total
mileage ranges from 80 to 200 miles. To

to acquire, develop
and maintain the
Foothills Trail come
from?

* State Trails and Paths dedi-
cated funds (RCW 47.30) % of 1% gas
tax for Highway safety. Pierce
County has received over $200,000.

© State Outdoor Recreation Ac-
counts issued through the Inter-
agency Committee. $610,000 has
been granted for the Foothills Trail
thus far.

* Property donations along the
trail have reduced acquisition costs
by 15%. Additional negotiations are
in progress for added parcels.

© Trail installation done by de-
velopers and private property own-
ers to enhance their property ap-
proach.

© Private grants and foundations
who support recreation and fitness
projects.

© Fund raising measures allow-
ing user groups to donate time, ma-
terials and money.

Why use
eminent domain
(condemnation)
on this parks
project?

Since the property is a former
railroad right-of-way, the claims
of the abutting property owners
and the original grantors would
take many years to resolve.

Eminent domain allows Pierce
County to purchase from any
owner with a claim to the prop-
erty at fair market value.

Donated parcels of property
must be condemned to extinguish
any unknown claims. This is
called “friendly condemnation.”
