Christmas Party
Scheduled For

December 14th

Joyce Clifford’s home is the
place for our Christmas party this
year. The address is 3811 N. Mad-
ison, Tacoma, WA. A short street
may require parking cars around
the corner. Of course, if you ride
your bicycle, this will not be a
problem. If you need directions to
the house, call Joyce at 759-2393.

Steve and Phyllis Lay will lead the afternoon ride starting at 1:00 pm. The riders should return at about 4:30 pm to start setting-up for dinner at 5:00 pm. Desserts will be saved for after the evening ride. At 6:30 pm we will ride through the North end of Tacoma to see the Christmas lights. Hot drinks and dessert will be waiting at Joyce’s home after this ride.

Club members are invited to join any part of the day’s events. Re- member to equip your bicycle with head lights and yourself with re- flective clothing for the evening ride. For fun, add Christmas lights to your bicycle.

The complete schedule for the
day’s events goes like this:

+ 12:45 pm—Put food in house.

  • 1:00 pm—Afternoon ride.

Coast To Coast Bicycle Classic
by

For two years, I have been a member of the Tacoma Wheel- men’s Club. This summer I will ride 3,400 miles across the U.S. This has always been a dream of mine. Not only will I have fun, but I will pedal for children who need help.

The money raised by this ride
will go to the Children’s Indust-
rial Home where I work as the
Director of Development. The
Children’s Industrial Home just
celebrated its century of ser-
vice—100 years of serving the
youth in Washington State.

My journey will help young
people who have suffered from

physical, sexual, and emotional
abuse. Right now we care for 100
youth on a 24 hour basis. We
offer specialized out-of-home
residential care, in-home family
counseling, emancipation ser-
vices, after care, crisis inter-
vention, drug and alcohol coun-
seling, and foster care.

My fund raising goal is $34,000.00! Part of the money raised will go to the Mountain Bike program we have at the Ranch. This program was featured in Northwest Cyclist Magazine last March.

The following pledges are
suggested, and are tax deductible.

Bob Myrick and Scott Pearson

They wrote a meeting summary
which was distributed with the
November Newsletter.

The annual LAW/BFW calendar meeting is November 9, 1991. Bob Myrick, Jan Wieser, and Diane Lister will be representing TWC. Bob said our first choice for the Daffodil ride is May 3, 1992, and the second choice is April 12, 1992. The first choice of the Pe- ninsula Metric is June 7, 1992, and second choice is May 31, 1992.

The contract to receive North- west Cyclist Magazine was received and returned by Bob Myrick. Don Izenman will provide the mailing list. The contract is for $5.00 per member per year for two years. Bob stated on the contract he sign- ed that we want an option to renew at the end of the first year, June 30, 1992

Carla was presented with a key
to the Club house.

We are looking for stories for
the banquet.

The Board discussed the need for
a “How To” book to define proce-
dures and contacts for each of our
events.

fe Letter To The Editor:

Dear Tacoma Wheelmen:

The Foothills Trail will become a reality because of you! Referen- dum 91-3 passed, and it passed because of the support and endorse- ment of the Tacoma Wheelmen’s Club. Thank you! But I can’t think of a better way to say thank you than to let you know there will be a Foothills Trail.

Thank you to all the Wheelmen who worked on the campaign—Bob Branson, Tom Cornell, Bill Daugh- erty, Bernie Dixon, Mike Dobb, Stan Engle, Hazel Giddings, Mar- gie Goulden, Carla Gramlich, Terry King, Diane Lister, Don & Robin Partington, Joy Roelofsz, Dave Sailer, Mark Smith, Bob Waterfield and Brian Wester. I am sure there were other campaign volunteers who are Tacoma Wheel- men, and I apologize for not in- cluding your name in this list.

Special recognition and thanks
should go to Stan Engle, Campaign
Treasurer. We also appreciated the
use of TWC’s tables and chairs at
campaign headquarters.

I know that when I’m on the
Foothills Trail I will remember this
campaign and appreciate the contri-
bution of the Wheelmen that made
the trail a reality.

Here’s to seeing you out on the
trail!

Around The Wheel:

Consumer Reports for October ’91 rates mountain bicycles. They rated the Giant Iguana and the Jazz Voltage as best buys. The ratings stayed within the $150 to $535 price range. May bicycle manufacturers keep marketing good bicycles at reasonable prices.

Bicycling magazine for December, 1991 gives plenty of gift ideas for bicyclists. 34 new products are presented beginning on page 34. Be the first Club member to get the Wheelsmith spoke wheel for $800, or the Mountain Goat Cycles genuine cowhide saddle with chrome buttons and dramatic fringe, no less.

But you can not beat Hammacher Schlemmer for outrageous materialistic idolatry. The December catalog will satisfy any gift givers or takers gluttony. One of the more humbly priced items is the pair of lighted slippers on page 83. The slippers have headlights in front of the sole so you can see your way around in the dark. Imagine a Club member of your choice padding around the campsite in a pair of these after a long ride. Don’t forget the batteries.

Articles, information, and letters to the editor are welcome for our Newsletter. Deadline for copy is
the third Tuesday of each month for the following month’s Newsletter. This is also our regular Club meeting
day. Copy can be given to the editor at the meeting or mailed to: William F. Hoehne, 5702 N. 33rd, Apt.
17B, Tacoma, WA 98407.

If Club members do not submit beautifully written articles to the editor, he will begin printing his love story in unending installments. (That ought to get some material.)
