Bicycling With Jack

Sunday dinner ride, Sept. 19, 1976, Eighteen hungry riders met at Olympic
Village, a small shopping center about three miles east of the narrows bridge
on highway 16. I biked out from town. Going over the bridge there was quite
a stiff wind blowing and it tended to blow around me quite a bit. This, along
with the narrow sidewalk and the traffic booming along at 55 miles per hour a
foot form my elbow, made for some nervous riding at times. ‘Not as bad as one
Sunday last spring when a real gale was blowing. The bridge sidewalk was com-
pletely unrideable and Frank Weldon, Dan Fildhouse, and myself walked our bikes
all the way-across- and thats a long way in case anyone is wondering.

The store has been turned into sort of an antique shop. From here the route led
over a hill and down to Cromwell.

The hill coming up out of Cromwill is something else! I was already for- warned as Bob Dahlhe had ridden the route in his jeep the week before and told me that he had to put it into four wheel drive, and even then had trouble pulling up it, Half the riders walkel up. Those that rode their bikes were either dead or dying at the top. But the ride along the beach and the tremendous view of Fox Island across ab Passage was worth every bit of the eggort.

Qur next stop was at Arletia, This is another one of those delightful little towns, consisting of combanation Country store and gas station, that dot the pen- insula countryside. In spite of my warnings not to spnoil their appitites, every- one went ahead and ate ice cream bars and guzzled po; before taking off again.

Guest rider Virgil Marko had problems eith hits bike and broke a spoke in the rear wheel, Then Bill Doherty broke a rear derailier cable. Both were able to make tempory repair and carry on. Resourseful people, these bicyclist.

Foom Arletta we swept in a curve past Kopachuh park up a long hill, then a long roll down to Gig Harbor and all collapsed on the deck of the Shoreline resturant.

After being seated at our tables, we were completly ignored for at least a
half an hour, while the help argued among themselves over who was go ing to have
to wait on us.

There were a few angry looks- mostly form Dorothy and Steve Newton. Finally we were served, What they lacked in promp service they at least made up in good food. The meal was delicious and the servings hude. I had breaded veal cutlet with mashed potatoes and country gravey. It cost $5.00.

Betty Sewell is going to lead a ride later on Halloween that will end up at Johneys on the Dock. Anyone liking to eat out once in a while is urged to come along.

After dinner we al] yode back up the hill to.the parking lot at Olympic village. It wis a great ride and three cheers and a gold star for Dorothy Keenel

R acing With Gary

Sept. 11 &12 The tour of the Windy City. The Tacoma Wheelman's team rolled
intoEllensburg Washington friday night, and found a place to stay, so with a fair
to bad nights sleep we all got up and got ready for our first race. Happy and
Steve M. race was 46 mil-3,Phill’s and my race was 86. Happy took first with Steve
3rd. I did not even finish becousr it was a hill climbing course with a 3 mile
hill in it. Phill took 5th.

Next day was a criterimm in down town Ellensburg. Happy amde a break on lap
4 and kept it the whole rece. At one point he had 35 sec. on the pack. Steve was
4th, I finished 2ed in the pack but 3rd over all becousréthere was also a
breakaway in our group. Jerry Baker, one of Washington's best riders laped the
field 2 times.

Sept. 18&19 Octoberfest, Mt. Angle Oregon, This one was one of the best races
I have been to becouse there were all kinds of spectators, The first reve Sat. was
a criterium. Steve M. took 3rd. and phill was 8th and I was 4th. Sun. as the race
started there were peoplw lined up all around the course 344 people deep. These
races were held at a festival with thousands of peoplw there. There race was a
last man out , where every other lap they pull the last man out. So there is a
sprint every other lap. At the finish it is a sprinters race, and very exciting
to watch, IN cat. 3 Happy and Steve's race, Happy pulled away from the last rider
to win hands down. Phill(incat. 2) was pulled out with 7 people left, and I made it
till there were only 2 of us on the last lap. The other guys jumped ad had a good

to him on the back part peole were really going nuts and when we°came around the last turn the crowd was jumping up and down and cheering us on,and crowding in on the road.

In our t.t. you are not completing against anyone but yourself. It is good for
the hot shot racers ss well as the weekend tourer and eveh the flower snifers
can enjoy the park as they go along.

1976 Banquets isccvesestces
This year we are having a banquet and at the banget we will be giving away
awards, I need a good idea of what kind of awards to give out. So if you have
a good idea for a award let me know. This month or one of the other club officers.
Next month we will be voting on the people we want to win these awards.
